Carto Map Guide: Edge Connections, Appearance Conditions, and Moving Your Position

A reference-cross-checked guide to 10 story chapters, difficult layouts, and secrets · Updated 2026-10-13

Alternate between walking to collect pieces and editing the map. If you cannot walk somewhere distant, consider placing your own piece near the destination.

Match terrain edges

Connect matching terrain edges. Do not expect to cross directly from grassland to a dense-forest edge; collect a connecting forest piece first. You do not always need every piece connected, and sometimes work with unnecessary pieces detached.

Check conversations, books, and inventory in order

Moving only the map before hearing a layout's condition may not reveal new land. Treat paper collection, resident conversations, and inventory checks together.

  1. Collect glowing paper before returning to the map.
  2. Examine new residents, books, and carvings.
  3. Create the shape or positional relationship indicated by the clue.
  4. Walk to the revealed sector and collect the next paper and conversation.

Different rearrangement rules

Fog, underground areas, ice, and the windy forest each have different movement restrictions. Simply repeating the previous region's actions will not solve them.

LocationRuleAction to change
Foggy forestGuidance changes from cloth to fallen tree to shaking treesPlace the next piece on the side indicated by the current clue

Underground volcanoThe map cannot be edited undergroundRotate it above ground, then inspect below
IceOnce sliding, continue until a stopping pointConnect the next ice edge at the stopping point
Windy forestCan walk only in the wind's directionRotate pieces and combine this with examining objects

Checks before undoing rearrangements

Check clues, inventory, your current position, and connecting edges first. After major rearrangements, directions in a reference may differ from your map without the event being broken.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q1 Can I move the land I am standing on? ▼
A

Your current piece is also used in rearrangements. Reconnect its edges to the destination rather than treating the walking distance as fixed.

Q2 Is the inability to edit beneath the volcano a bug? ▼
A

That region's magnetic field imposes this rule. Climb a ladder to the surface, rotate pieces, and recheck the underground passage.
