R.E.P.O. beginner guide: grab, rotate, carry, and retreat
Default PC keys and cart use organized by transport sequence. Check lost value, objects too heavy to lift, and corner jams, with solo/co-op hauling differences.
Edition: PC Steam app 3241660, standard release, no mods. Normal new shifts, solo or co-op for up to six. Baseline early-game state; later Moon conditions and existing upgrades addressed separately where relevant.
Verification scope: Early Access standard v0.4.4, dated May 25, 2026, checked officially on October 4, 2026. v0.4.0 Cosmetic Update is implemented. June 5 discussion of the next level/1.0 is treated as plans; excludes beta, mods, and unreleased ports. Not gameplay-tested.

First inputs and object movement to learn
Left-click connects you to an object. Moving without adjusting orientation, distance, and route can let you through while the cargo hits a wall. Defaults below; changed in-game bindings take priority.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action | Required state | Input and use | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab/release | Target within reach | Hold left-click; release to let go | Connected position and movement direction |
| Rotate | Holding with left-click | Hold right-click and move the mouse to orient it | Does the narrow side face the doorway? |
| Push/pull | Grab remains connected | Adjust distance with the wheel | Too close to hit you, or too far to hit a wall? |
| Physics throw | No teammate/valuable ahead | Build outward momentum with the wheel, then release left-click | Not for ordinary transport of expensive items |
| Use | Holding a usable tool | E to use/activate | Separate pickup from operation |
| Store/retrieve | Holding a storable tool | Put in 1/2/3; use the same slot to take out | Auto-hold settings change its state immediately after retrieval |
| Sprint/crouch | Safe ground around you | Shift to sprint, Ctrl to crouch | Sprinting uses stamina; crouched rest recovers it faster |
| Tumble | Safe place to tumble toward | Q to ragdoll | Not the throw key. Check steps/holes before using. |
| Map | Exploring | View with Tab | Disabled in the truck, shop, and similar areas |

Do not practice large mouse-flick throws with valuables before delivery. Physics throw distance and collisions are not constant.
Carry one item to the cart without damage
On a first shift, perform lift → rotate → pass through doorway → set down in sequence. This lets you identify where value dropped instead of rapidly combining actions.
- Outside the truck, locate cart, first extraction, and return door. Check the path for holes and steps first.
- Aim at a small valuable and hold left-click. Read its value and lift slowly.
- Stop before the doorway and use right-click to orient the narrow side toward the passage. Adjust distance with the wheel to avoid side walls and ceiling.
- Release once the object fits inside the cart. Check whether it tilts or protrudes and read the screen's total.
- Move the cart by its handle. Slow at corners and check both the cart and the cargo's width will fit.
The cart helps safe hauling, but does not guarantee immunity when protruding objects strike walls or enemies.
Change transport methods by object
Even if left-click grabs them similarly, shape and weight change the next action. Before forcing a lift, consider recovering something else first.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Cargo | Requirement | Method | Player/version difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small fragile object | Collision-free space from grab point to destination | Lift slowly, orient, and place in the cart | Easy to try solo. Do not use modded storage/damage immunity. |
| Tall/wide object | Orientation fitting doorway and ceiling | Rotate before the entrance and lead with the narrow side | In co-op, have one person check space ahead |
| Heavy object that will not leave the floor | Grab position, Strength, number supporting it | Support in the same direction together or switch to manageable loot | Solo cannot assume others' strength; consider upgrades/aids |
| C.A.R.T. | Passable ground and grip on the handle | Normally use the handle for stability | Behaves differently from grabbing the body directly |
| Purchased tool | Storable item and free slot | Hold with left-click and store in 1/2/3; retrieve when needed | Check individual charge/uses. Unlimited-storage mods excluded. |
| Dead teammate's head | Survivor and an extraction capable of revival | Bring it in before the platform closes and complete extraction successfully | Co-op rescue. Solo cannot perform this on yourself. |

Repeatedly scraping a heavy object against walls lowers its value even if you eventually move it. If more hands do not solve it, reconsider orientation and route.
Isolate transport problems by symptom
Pausing to check value and position separates insufficient upgrades from handling mistakes.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | Value/state/position check | Action | Success check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scrapes the floor instead of lifting | Weight and grab point | Regrip, call support, or collect a manageable item first | Control it clear of the floor |
| Stuck in a doorway | Widest face/depth | Back out before the doorway and adjust rotation and distance | Sides pass without scraping the frame |
| An item you placed flies out | Overlapping/protruding cargo | Stop and reposition one item at a time | Cargo stable before moving cart |
| Total is decreasing | Recent collision and damage point | Change handling and recalculate the target using current value | Extraction-platform display also meets the required amount |
| Cart swings around | Are you grabbing somewhere other than its handle? | Regrip the handle | Follows ahead with a stable orientation |
| Cannot sprint to escape | Stamina depleted? | Stop sprinting behind safe cover and crouch to recover | Move once stamina returns |
| Tool retrieved but unusable | Was it dropped on the floor rather than held? | Grab with left-click and check the E use prompt | Use occurs or remaining charge changes |

Health, stamina, and item value are separate numbers. Do not sacrifice your escape route or stamina by forcing transport just to protect value.
Separate sound and sight when first responding to enemies
Conditions differ before and after detection. Sprinting and colliding before being noticed may increase danger. These representative exceptions avoid universal advice; they are not a combat guide for every enemy.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Cue/situation | Reason to change behavior | Action to try | Claim to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huntsman's appearance/gun | Strong reaction to sound | Avoid sudden sprinting and noise; move toward cover | Breaking line of sight alone is safe |
| Spotted a Robe | Direct staring increases danger | Check your path and leave without staring at its face | Just look back and observe while running away |
| Hauler is pursued | Scraping cargo noise and narrow retreat | Place cargo somewhere manageable to regain mobility | Never release it if expensive |
| Under furniture | Is this where the enemy last saw you? | Keep noise down and check an exit you can reach | Crouching puts you beyond every enemy's attacks |

Voice communicates with teammates, but brief agreed signals make it easier to stop hauling than lengthy discussion near enemies. Check microphone settings before departure too.
In co-op, separate moving the object from checking the passage
Everyone pulling simultaneously can apply conflicting forces and jam doorways. These are temporary roles for a particular load, not fixed classes.
- One person briefly calls the destination and turning direction, checking a passable route before moving the cargo.
- Add people supporting heavy cargo toward the same destination. The route checker moves ahead where they will not push the object back.
- Before moving the cart, check nobody is still rearranging it. Read the total before heading to extraction.
- To give HP to a teammate, hold left-click on the green bar at the back of their head. This consumes your own HP; watch your remaining amount and stop accordingly.
Solo players should organize short trips with small items and cart parking instead of simultaneous tasks. You need not force unmanageable loot through one route.
Frequently asked questions
E does not pick up valuables
Basic grabbing uses held left-click. E operates usable held tools and similar actions. First connect with left-click, then try right-click rotation and wheel distance adjustment.
Can I throw objects with Q?
Q is Tumble. Physics throws use outward momentum on a grabbed object, then release. Valuables damage easily this way, so ordinarily carry and set them down gently.
Must I buy Strength to move heavy items?
Shape, grab point, and player count matter too. First test handling and joint carrying, then choose upgrades for solo play or repeated obstacles. No fixed upgrade count applies to every item.
Does the cart guarantee value never decreases?
It helps stabilize hauling, but does not guarantee immunity for protruding cargo or wall/enemy contact. Check value before/after loading and after corners.
Enemies attack even when I crouch
Crouching is not complete invulnerability or invisibility. Check reactions to sound/sight, where you were last seen, and escape exits. Do not use the same running response for Huntsman and Robe.
