Choose by the action blocking you now
You need not read every answer. First check the screen state and inventory, then open only your current section.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | First check | Article | Target version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressing keys does not inspect anything | Whether control returned to the game and bindings are unchanged | Getting started: basic inputs | 2016 Windows version |
| You have the item but cannot advance | What is selected at bottom-right, and whether its name changed after combining | First playthrough: current location | 2016 Windows version |
| An in-game terminal directs you elsewhere | The full conversation and Windows-side display | Getting started: checking outside the game | Actual Windows desktop |
| You finished the first route and want to check what follows | Whether the story reached its ending point | Post-completion guide | First route and additional progress distinguished |

First check the product name in your library
These four articles cover Steam's OneShot, AppID 420530. Even on Windows, the separate World Machine Edition product uses different interaction locations.

| Check | Treatment in this guide |
|---|---|
| OneShot / AppID 420530 | Uses actual Windows windows and game-generated files |
| OneShot: World Machine Edition | Virtual-desktop version; do not apply this page's real-file actions unchanged |
| 2014 freeware version | Outside scope because item locations, quitting behavior and ending differ |

PC alone does not distinguish the versions. Check both product name and AppID.
Three checks before opening answers
Before expanding exploration, narrow down whether an action can currently work.
- Finish remaining dialogue or choices and return to a walkable state.
- Read an item's description and check that the selected item appears at bottom-right.
- Try using it on an object separately from combining it with another inventory item.
This is this article's checking order, not a required sequence for every in-game event.
Taking breaks is fine
The official store explains that closing the 2016 PC game window saves progress. The title alone does not mean you must never take a break.
- Stop at a break in dialogue where you can move freely.
- Next time, launch with the same Steam account and Windows environment.
- For a particular achievement too, read the getting-started caution about quitting methods.
Task termination and powering off the PC are not recommended as equivalent to normally closing the window.
Outside the game, check only what it specifies
This version has mechanisms beyond the game window. Read its directions first, then check the specified display or generated item.
- Check whether another small Windows window is hidden behind the game.
- Use windowed mode to move between the game and Windows desktop.
- Do not assume normal documents, photos or work folders need modifying.
Ignoring security warnings, disabling protection or obtaining unknown executable files are not part of these steps.
Resume note: place, inventory and last conversation
A one-line note lets you return without searching later story summaries.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| What to record | How to write it |
|---|---|
| Current location | In-game destination name or building features |
| Inventory | New items and their names after combination |
| Latest change | A door opened, terminal started or person moved |
| Next objective | Who requested what, in one line in your own words |

Travel generally operates within the current region. Do not progress assuming you can always return to a previous major region.
Verification scope
Built by comparing official version information and updates with independently authored guides and a specialist wiki. This is not a firsthand gameplay account.
- Read mandatory first-route progress separately from optional detours.
- For variable numbers or arrangements, prioritize clues on your own screen.
- Do not guess non-Windows save locations or unconfirmed build differences.
No guarantee covers every move on a board or every achievement. Pending points are stated in their corresponding sections.
