Choose a guide by your problem
UNDERTALE is an RPG journey through an underground world. You can progress without killing enemies, and dialogue and battle actions affect later events. Read only the guide sections you need.

| Problem | Page to read | What it explains |
|---|---|---|
| Unsure how ACT or sparing works | Beginner guide | Choosing an action, reading the response, dodging and ending battles |
| Checking eligibility for your intended ending | Route branching | Requirements, missing conditions and points where you can return |
| Stuck on a path or boss | Main walkthrough | Area hints and closed solution sections |

The hub focuses on controls and preparation. Direct solutions and ending requirements appear in closed sections on linked pages, to be opened when needed.
Read the enemy's reaction before choosing again
- Use ACT to inspect the enemy and see descriptions or available interactions
- After an action, check the response text and how the enemy's name is displayed
- Move the heart to dodge during enemy attacks. Large movements are not always necessary
- When sparing is available, choose MERCY then Spare. Flee is also available against enemies you can escape
Avoiding FIGHT and avoiding kills are different conditions. Some encounters require attacking to progress, so repeating ACT alone will not end every battle. Examples are separated into the final part of the main walkthrough.
Check HP, armor and food before approaching a boss
- Inspect a star-shaped save point to restore HP, and choose SAVE if you want to record progress
- Do not merely pick up new armor: equip it from your items and check your stats
- Move healing items from boxes into your inventory. You cannot restock from a box during battle
- After defeat, change your preparation from the previous save and practice one difficult attack at a time
A useful healing guideline is before one more hit becomes alarming. This is advice, not a guaranteed damage threshold for every enemy and armor combination.
You may choose a route initially or discover it as you play
If you want to preserve surprises, start with the beginner guide. If you have a specific ending in mind, check route branching. Either approach is available.
- To avoid killing, check your status and ensure EXP has not increased
- If you accidentally kill an enemy, decide whether to reload your previous record before overwriting it with another SAVE
- When a character invites you to visit, check their home and conversation events too
Separate changes in dialogue from current route eligibility. A character mentioning a restart does not automatically mean your intended route is permanently unavailable.
Separate problems with controls, text and preparation

| Symptom | First thing to try |
|---|---|
| The enemy's name does not turn yellow | Read changes in descriptions and action order instead of repeating one ACT. The name-color setting may also have changed |
| Choosing Spare does not end the battle | Some encounters require repeated Spare, escape or another condition. Check the area walkthrough |
| You cannot keep dodging | Check the rules for white, light-blue and orange attacks, then review armor and healing supplies |
| You cannot find a new path | Check signs, floor changes and passages after dialogue. Open only your current area in the walkthrough |

Platform and verification scope
These articles cover ordinary progression in the PC base game. The official Steam store confirms Japanese support. Numerical entries retain source and check-date records; no personal gameplay claims or guaranteed playtimes are added.
Console-only detours, special modes and stream-exclusive additions are not mixed into required PC progression.
