ABOUT

What is Inscryption?

A blend of deckbuilding roguelite mechanics, escape room puzzles, and psychological horror. It begins with a card game against a mysterious opponent in a dim cabin, but the real premise unfolds once you realize the tabletop is not the whole game. Sacrifices and resource management provide a solid deckbuilding foundation, overlaid with a different mystery: what exactly is this situation? Almost any explanation could spoil something, so starting without advance knowledge is strongly recommended. Over 147,000 Steam reviews, rated Overwhelmingly Positive. Japanese is supported.

「First distinguish blood cards from bone cards, then consider what you can play next turn. Exploring the cabin also affects progress. Specific boss and cabin hints appear in closed sections, so open only what you need.」 — How to use this guide (editorial explanation)

Covers the early part of Act 1 in the PC main game. Later acts, the ending, and Kaycee's Mod challenge strategies and conditions are outside its scope. Sources reviewed and article revised: October 3, 2026.

6 basic rules for Act 1

The board has 4 lanes

In Act 1, you fight using your 4 spaces and the enemies opposite them. Attacking through an empty opposing lane moves the scale.

What to do on the board: Before focusing only on strong cards, check which lanes can hit you directly and which let you hit the opponent directly.

Victory depends on the scale's balance

The basic win condition is dealing 5 more damage than your opponent. This does not mean that attacking 5 times in total always ends the battle.

What to do on the board: Read incoming damage and the scale's current balance alongside your next attack's damage.

Paying blood costs

Play blood-cost cards by sacrificing creatures on your side of the board. Ordinary Squirrels are free to play and can be sacrificed.

What to do on the board: If you sacrifice a current attacker, check that the resulting board still has enough attack and defense.

Paying bone costs

Bone-cost cards spend your stock of bones. You gain bones when your creatures die. Do not count blood and bones as the same resource.

What to do on the board: If you have enough bones, you do not need additional blood sacrifices. Compare the card's top-right cost with your stock.

Choosing which deck to draw from

On an ordinary turn, choose between drawing from the Squirrel pile and your own deck. Squirrels help pay costs, but you also need the main deck to find attackers.

What to do on the board: Start by choosing a Squirrel if you have a card you want to play but lack sacrifices, or looking for an attacker if sacrifices are all you have.

Special effects of sigils

Sigils such as Airborne change the results of ordinary attacks against the opposite lane. Their explanations can be checked in the cabin's rulebook.

What to do on the board: When an unfamiliar sigil appears, read it first instead of predicting the result by adding attack values alone.

5 checks from drawing to attacking

  1. Check enemy lanes and look for places likely to take direct damage next. Consult the rulebook for cards with sigils too.
  2. Read the costs in your hand and identify whether you currently lack sacrifices, bones, or an empty board space.
  3. Choose a draw pile. Use the Squirrel pile if you need sacrifices; if you can already pay costs, search your main deck for attackers or answers.
  4. Before placing a card, count the attack and defense lost through sacrifices too. Playing an expensive card should not be the goal in itself.
  5. Check the scale and sigils once more before attacking. If you cannot win, preserve creatures and cards in hand for the next turn.

Read the scale as the difference in direct damage

A calculation-only example: if you deal 3 direct damage but take 2 direct damage, this exchange widens the difference by 1. Attacks against enemy creatures are not added directly to the scale. On a real board, also account for sigil exceptions and the scale's current balance.

If you are stuck on the first boss

Open the Prospector's 2 phases and responses (Act 1 spoilers)
  1. Watch the Pack Mule and your hand in phase 1

Defeating the Pack Mule replenishes your hand. First check its position and which of your cards can attack that lane. This guide does not specify how many cards it grants.

  2. Review the board before your first scale victory

The Prospector is not finished after one victory. The transition to the next phase replaces your creatures with Gold Nuggets, so prepare to avoid spending every strong card beforehand.

  3. Gold Nuggets cannot be cleared by sacrificing them

Gold Nuggets occupy spaces and cannot be sacrificed. Until enemy attacks clear occupied lanes, you have limited room for new creatures. First check which lanes are empty.

  4. Keep cards in hand for phase 2

Do not fill every lane with unnecessary creatures just before ending phase 1. Keep your next attacker and sacrifices in hand so you can rebuild in newly opened spaces after losing attackers to Gold Nuggets.

Investigating early cabin puzzles

Open safe and drawer clues (Act 1 spoilers)
  1. Leave your seat and investigate between battles

The cabin's objects and rulebook contain progression clues beyond card battles. After a loss, check how the room has changed instead of only following the same route again.

  2. Use the rulebook's clue for the safe

Examine the Mighty Leap description and enter the displayed numbers into the safe. The clue may not appear before early progression, so continue card battles if the safe does not open at the start.

  3. Use the key inside the safe

The safe contains the Stinkbug and a key for the drawers. Once you have the key, use it on the cabin's cabinet and investigate the board-style puzzles.

  4. Calculate attack outcomes for the drawer puzzles

Move the card-like pieces to create a setup that tips the scale toward victory, accounting for sigils. There are 4 puzzles, which also let you practice reading Airborne, sigils that block flying attacks, split attacks, and retaliation. Instead of copying a diagram, check the result with the bell and move one piece at a time.

Reveal the safe combination

The safe combination is 2, 7, 3 from top to bottom. First check that you have reached the point where the numbers appear in the rulebook. Finished drawer layouts are not provided because independent reproduction checks remain insufficient.

Versions covered and unverified areas

Official announcements confirmed for this guide include main-game V1.10 (June 2022, adding Mac/Linux support) and the full release of Kaycee's Mod in March 2022. The current executable's version number and differences from console ports remain unverified. No reproduction testing through gameplay has been performed.

  • The full chain through the cabin's later clock and film puzzles, every boss, current card stats, and all achievement unlock conditions are outside this review's scope.
  • Kaycee's Mod is a separate way to play based on Act 1. Old beta access codes and launch shortcuts from old articles are not presented as current unlock conditions.
FAQ

Inscryption FAQ

Q1 Does every card cost blood? ▼
A

No. Act 1 also has free cards and bone-cost cards. Check the cost field first and handle blood sacrifices separately from your stock of bones.

Q2 Is it safe to draw only Squirrels? ▼
A

You can prepare sacrifices, but you cannot move toward victory without attackers in hand. Choose which pile to draw from based on whether you have a card to play and enough resources to pay for it.

Q3 Why isn't it over after I deal 5 damage? ▼
A

The scale moves according to the difference between both sides' direct damage. Check what you have taken too. A boss may also move to another phase after one victory.

Q4 I can't sacrifice the Prospector's Gold Nuggets ▼
A

Gold Nuggets cannot be sacrificed like ordinary creatures. Start by saving strong cards before the transition and keeping cards in hand to play into lanes opened when Nuggets break.

Q5 The safe numbers are missing from the rulebook ▼
A

Check whether you are still before the point where the clue appears. Rather than repeatedly entering numbers during the opening, advance the card battles and inspect the book again.

Q6 Does this page cover the game through the ending? ▼
A

It covers Act 1 rules, the first boss, and early cabin puzzles. Steps for later acts or the ending have not been added here. Open only the spoiler sections you need.
