2016 Windows keys, item selection and combinations, stopping/resuming and finding displays outside the game. Concrete mechanism answers are separated into other collapsed sections.

Owning an item differs from selecting it

Obtaining an item does not use it on a person or device. Check the bottom-right active selection.

  1. Open inventory with S and choose the item whose description you want.
  2. Select the item to use and return to exploration.
  3. Approach the target, face it and confirm.
  4. For combinations, keep one item selected, reopen inventory and choose the other.
  5. After combining, check the new name and description. Select that item again before using it on the next target.

Some items open a display or conversation merely through selection. Read descriptions and screen changes rather than repeatedly pressing an unselectable item.

Walk to destinations not yet in Travel

Travel generally returns to visited outdoor locations in the current region. It does not open new regions in advance.

  1. Go outside, open the menu and check Travel.
  2. If destinations exist, choose one close to the current objective.
  3. If none exists, explore unvisited paths or building exits on foot.
  4. Leave interiors where unavailable first, although story scenes can also restrict travel.

Upper levels and surface have different destination lists. This is not a shared warp back to previous major regions.

Separate saving from achievement requirements

Normal window closing saves progress. A specific achievement, however, imposes requirements on how you stop.

Separate saving from achievement requirements: 3 entries
GoalMethodCaution
Take a normal break and continueClose the window at a controllable break and launch the same game next timeDifferent from forced termination or power loss
Rest at an in-game breakInspect an available bed and sleepAfter bed scenes, finish the conversation when restarting
Also pursue the quitting-related achievementUse bed-based exits during ordinary sectionsFor story-required closing exceptions, check the relevant walkthrough section

Normal closing once does not prevent continuing the story. Achievements also do not require playing without rest.

Check the window and separate small messages

When in-game text seems stopped, another message window may be awaiting input.

  1. Read and answer any small window outside the game in that window.
  2. If missing, switch among open Windows windows to check.
  3. Use Fullscreen settings or F8 to switch to windowed mode as needed.
  4. Select the game again before pressing movement keys.

Do not assume an unfamiliar warning is fictional. If an OS security warning appears, record it and stop the action.

Read outside clues before changing anything

Check Windows Documents or other locations after the story directs you there. Unrelated files do not need searching or deleting.

Frequently asked questions

Does selecting an item mean using it?

For target-based items, select one and then inspect the target. Some items open displays just by selection; check descriptions and the bottom-right state.

Where are stopping methods explained?

See Separate saving from achievement requirements on this page.

How much file manipulation is required?

Only game-directed generated items are involved. Find exact names in the corresponding collapsed story or post-completion guide section.

Can I use this with a desktop inside the game screen?

It may be World Machine Edition. Check the product name and do not apply steps that move actual Windows files.
