What is Into the Breach?
A turn-based tactics game by Subset Games. Move three mechs on an 8×8 board to protect buildings and the power grid from Vek attacks. Read current attack previews and combine kills, pushes, smoke, freezing and other tools. Use corporate island rewards to improve equipment and pilots, then challenge the final island after completing two, three or four islands. Japanese is supported. Advanced Edition added five squads, 39 weapons and pieces of equipment, four pilots and more.
Scope: PC Advanced Edition (additional content ON; mechanics based on the official 1.2.88 update announcement) / Content checked: October 2, 2026
Your first run
- Use Rift Walkers to check the tutorial's pushes and building grid power. If you are unsure how to position the three mechs, continue to basic tactics.
- Complete four regular missions and the HQ battle on an island. Improve your mechs and pilots through objective rewards, Time Pods and Perfect Island rewards.
- After two corporate islands, you can select the final island. Use your equipment and ability to handle enemies to decide whether to attempt it after two islands or strengthen your squad on a third or fourth.
Advanced Edition additions and settings
| Addition or change | How the guide handles it |
|---|---|
| Five new squads, 39 weapons/equipment items and four new pilots | [AE] marks additions in the articles. Original squads also gain access to new equipment and skills. |
| New enemies, missions and random skills | Check the additional-content settings at the start. With them OFF, the same options may not appear. |
| Unfair | Unavoidable losses increase. Compare losses to grid power, pilots and missions instead of assuming that everything must remain unscathed. |
| Changes to weapon power requirements, shops and more | Turning additional content OFF does not restore every balance setting to the 2018 version. |
- Official PC update notes checked October 2, 2026. Mechanics are based on Advanced Edition and the official 1.2.88 announcement. Netflix's iOS/Android versions use separate update numbers.
Four easily misunderstood points
| What a brief explanation leaves out | How to decide in practice |
|---|---|
| Can you see everything enemies will do? | You can check current attack previews and order. Future spawns, positions and rewards are not all fixed. |
| Can mechs take unlimited damage? | Normal damage heals between battles, but you may lose the pilot of a destroyed mech. |
| Is lost grid power gone forever? | It does not recover automatically after battles. Mission rewards, shops and other sources can restore it. |
| Should you kill every enemy? | Prevent the current damage first. Safe kills make the next turn easier, but killing alone may not solve every threat. |
Scope: PC Advanced Edition, referencing official v1.2.88 update notes. The weapon examples below use no modifications or adjustments to use counts. Activation core costs that differ from older versions are not listed. / Additional check: October 3, 2026
Decision examples for three limited-use weapons
One use in the table means the base uses per battle without modifications. Check remaining uses and upgrades on the equipment screen before firing.
| Weapon | Base uses | Effect | Check before use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frost Beam | One use | Freezes targets in a straight line. | Check targets lined up along the same firing line. Use the attack previews to see whether you can stop the targets that will matter on later turns. |
| Smoke Drop | One use | Creates smoke on the selected tile and its four orthogonally adjacent tiles. | Choose a position that puts enemies in smoke. Also check whether smoke covers tiles from which allies want to attack next turn. |
| Heavy Rocket | One use | Deals 3 damage to the target and pushes surrounding tiles. | Check not just the unit hit, but whether surrounding units are pushed into buildings or allies. |
- Smoke Drop covers five tiles: one center plus four adjacent. Tiles extending off the board do not still exist merely to complete a count of five.
- With a +1 Use modification or pilot adjustment, prioritize the equipment screen over the table's base uses.
Heavy Rocket: choose who needs the 3 damage
The following calculations assume no armor, A.C.I.D., Boost, collisions or similar adjustments.
| Enemy's current HP | Unmodified 3 damage | Example decision |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | HP3−3=0 | Can kill. If the surrounding pushes are also safe, it can stop an attack in one action. |
| 4 | HP4−3=1 | Survives this hit alone. Combine another attack or use another method to redirect its attack away from a building. |
| 5 | HP5−3=2 | Cannot kill in one unmodified hit. Activating +2 Damage makes 3+2=5, but check the equipment screen and predicted result. |
- Extra uses and extra damage are separate modifications. Check core costs and active modifications on the equipment screen so you can adjust usage again for the next battle.
Checks before firing a limited shot
- First find previews that normal attacks or movement can solve, then check remaining attacks on buildings.
- For Frost Beam, choose the firing line; for Smoke Drop, the center and four adjacent tiles; for Heavy Rocket, the impact and push destinations.
- Check remaining weapon uses and whether enough power is available to activate the modification.
- Read the attack preview for results on buildings, allies and mission targets as well as enemies. If other mechs must handle remaining attacks, leave their movement destinations free first.
- Limited uses and the ability to kill an enemy are separate issues. Check each mission's objectives, including cases where smoke or freezing stops an attack preview.
