Elin Beginner Guide: Complete a Gathering, Food, Sleep and Storage Cycle
At Elin’s standard start, learn to inspect targets, hold tools, collect materials, eat, sleep and store items. Distinguish fatigue and weight problems that interrupt work.
Edition: PC Steam app 2135150, normal Stable branch without mods. Control examples use a new character at the standard starting home with no oaths. One Block, Nightly, special oaths and Elona/Elona+ are outside scope. Prioritize your own screen for racial and class skill differences.
Verification scope: Checked on 2026-10-04 against EA 23.338 Stable (official announcement body dated 2026-08-24; Steam posting dated 2026-08-23). Do not assume September news about Nightly additions applies to normal Stable. Further Stable patch numbers and the installed game have not been verified. Recipes were compared with the current wiki and independent guides; disagreements were also checked against developer-published tables, while details unconfirmed in the same release version remain withheld.

Check the target and action verb before right-clicking
Right-click options change by target: eat food, hold a tool or use a facility. Hover to read the action name so you do not consume an item you only intended to move.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | State/quest to inspect | Required item and action | How to confirm success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move nearby | Ground destination and route | Left-click nearby clear ground. | Move in the selected direction. Do not select a long dangerous route at once. |
| Inspect a target | Item name/action under the cursor | Hover over it and check additional actions with middle-click/R. | Identify the target and available actions. |
| Put away a held tool | Hotbar selection and hands | Click the far left of the hotbar to return to bare hands. | The tool is no longer held. |
| View inventory | Bag icon/inventory | Open the icon; Tab in the default example. | Tools and food are listed. |
| You have an axe but cannot fell a tree | Held tool and the tree’s harvesting prompt | Right-click the inventory axe to hold it, then right-click the tree. | Harvesting starts and materials are generated. |
| Right-click performs another action | The target’s current verb | Open additional actions with middle-click or default R, then select the intended action. | The chosen action, such as hold/use, is selected. |
| You must find the axe in inventory every time | Numbered shortcut slots | Drag the axe into a slot and select it using the wheel or another method. | The held tool changes. |
| A facility faces the wrong way | Placement preview | Middle-click while placing to rotate. | The usable face or door changes direction. |
| You cannot find stored materials | Home/inventory search | Use default Ctrl+F to search the name and locate it from the results. | Identify the location of materials with that name. |

If bindings or widget positions have changed, current settings and tooltips take precedence. When trying to hold food or a potion, choose Hold explicitly from additional actions.
Distinguish completed harvesting from completed pickup
Start with enough logs for one workbench. After felling a tree, check the inventory count to distinguish failure to harvest from failure to collect.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| First task | Required tool/location | Action order | Starting/version differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gather logs | Axe and mature tree | Hold axe → harvest → check logs on the ground/in inventory | Saplings yield other materials such as branches. |
| Gather grass/leaves | Weeds at home | Harvest the target → collect output → read its name | Do not assume identical items and quantities every time. |
| Gather vines and similar materials | Relevant plant | Check the recipe’s ingredient → harvest plant → inspect inventory | Do not equate similar-looking grass, vines and leaves. |
| Collect generated items | Ground beneath you after harvesting | With bare hands, check the item’s Pick Up prompt → left-click to collect | Check weight even with auto-pickup. |
| Pause work | Fatigue display and stamina | Stop gathering and return once you have enough. | Skills affect efficiency; gathering time is not fixed. |

Not seeing trees does not require immediate distant travel. First check home targets, tool action prompts and materials already on the ground.
Reopen guidance and quests
- Keep the Adventure Log given by the guide. Reread it for unfamiliar controls and search the in-game help too.
- Speak to Ashland and Fiama at the starting location. Afterward, check your feet and inventory for supplied tools and papers.
- Show the quest tracker and compare it with the journal text. Check whether crafting alone suffices or placement, equipment or reporting is also required.
- After work, return to the same quest giver and speak. Confirm the quest display changed before collecting the next materials.
Specific quest answers and dependencies are in the early-progression article’s closed answers. You can stop here at checking controls.
Check food name, condition and quantity before eating
Carrying food does not fill hunger. Do not treat everything gathered early as the same ingredient; inspect names, properties and spoilage before eating.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | State/quest to inspect | Required item and action | How to confirm success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunger persists | Food name and current action verb | Choose an edible item and use Eat. | Satiety/hunger status changes. |
| Mushrooms look alike | Names such as red mushroom/white mushroom | Separate types with side effects from meals. | The food selected is the intended one. |
| Stored food is unusable | Spoilage display | Gather perishables regularly in needed amounts; prepare longer-lasting food for long trips. | There is actually edible stock before departure. |
| Cooking lowers health | Fatigue/overwork | Cooking also uses stamina, so rest first or use existing food. | Return to a condition suitable for work. |
| Food for the town trip is uncertain | Carried food and funds | Check inn meals and sales of preserved food. | Leave food and money for the return. |

This table prioritizes safe meals. It does not judge every food’s growth efficiency or all poison resistances.
Restore HP and work fatigue separately
Distinguish restoring HP/MP through rest from restoring stamina by sleeping in a bed. If working reduces HP without enemies nearby, stop harvesting and check fatigue and weight.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Current state | Field to inspect | Action to try | Result to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low HP/MP after combat | Enemies, hunger and fatigue | Use the Rest ability somewhere safe. | Check whether HP/MP recover. |
| Sleepiness/fatigue | Stamina and status display | Use Sleep on a placed bed. | Check stamina and fatigue after waking. |
| A crafted bed is unusable | Inventory/ground/installed state | Hold → place it, then choose Sleep nearby. | It can be used as a bed. |
| No bed yet | Workbench and required materials | Make a makeshift bed or use sleep through Rest when tired/sleepy. | Sleeping without bedding has different efficiency. |
| Sleep does not always restore the same amount | Bedding material, quality, comfort/properties | Read bedding information rather than comparing names alone. | Relate recovery differences to their conditions. |

Working through negative stamina is not used as a basic starting procedure. Make food and a bed usable before resuming lengthy gathering.
Complete one everyday-survival cycle before leaving
- Check quests and inventory, then gather only the next materials needed at home. After harvesting, inspect auto-pickup/the ground and quantities.
- Place the crafted workbench and bed and open/use each once. Open a chest too and try transferring one stored item.
- Eat to resolve hunger and sleep to resolve fatigue. Leave materials not needed for travel in a chest to reduce weight.
- Choose one destination and return errand when leaving. The world map advances time substantially, so do not wander long distances carrying only perishable food.
No deadline requires reaching town on day one or completing all facilities by a set day. First establish a sustainable routine for your own food and skills.
Frequently asked questions
Right-clicking uses the item instead of holding it.
Default actions differ by target. Hover, then choose Hold through middle-click or R additional actions. Especially for food or potions, read the action name before executing it.
Harvested materials do not increase in inventory.
With harvested-item auto-pickup disabled, they first fall to the ground. Look beneath you, collect them and check names and counts. If changing the setting, watch for excessive weight.
Why does working lower HP when there are no enemies?
First check overwork and excessive carrying. Stop harvesting, put down supplies or sleep in a bed before resuming. Restored HP alone does not establish that work fatigue is gone.
Are ingredient quantities and task times identical for every race and class?
Check recipe requirements, current skills and materials. Work speed, usable equipment and growth conditions differ. This example cycle guarantees neither a fixed number of days nor success for every character.
