Build routes by linking rest stops
Do not try to climb the mountain in one unbroken line; treat reaching the next standing place as one section. This table helps compare routes.

| Terrain | Where to look | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven rock face | Positions for feet as well as hands | Find a line allowing small body movements |
| Wide smooth rock | Horizontal cracks and neighboring rock faces | Consider going around instead of straight up |
| Ledge | Room to stand on top | Use it as a stop to inspect the next wall |
| Cave or ruined building | Entrance and usable approach footholds | Visit for supplies and exploration |
| Hard brown rock | Nearby rock of another type | Do not count it as a planned normal-piton placement |
| Ice | Equipment grip and resting places | Account for stamina used by striking |

Early place names and landmarks to check
These landmarks help identify the early itinerary. English place names are included for comparison with on-screen displays.

| Section | Place to inspect | Before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Twisted Ridge | Route to the signpost above | Check your condition before entering the Escarpment |
| Escarpment | Bivouac and nearby water source | Refill water and explore around the wall too |
| The Arch | Waterfall-side exploration | Inspect belongings, letters, and other objects |
| The Shortcut | Maps, directions, and bivouacs along the route | Compare easier climbing lines before attaching |

Supply landmarks for these 4 sections have been checked. This is not a route table for every mountain branch, collectible, or fastest record.
Decisions before a long wall
The shortest on-screen distance is not necessarily a safe route with your current equipment.
- First choose the ledge you want to reach and find holds for resting your posture along the way.
- Check for rock that accepts normal pitons between here and there.
- Before entering a long stretch of hard rock, compare another route to the side.
- If the route proves unsuitable partway up, observe again from a stable place. Do not try to recover by forcing continuous inputs.
Reading maps and directions
Use local maps in relation to your current goal. Finishing a climb differs from finishing exploration of that location.

| Goal | What to seek first |
|---|---|
| Continue onward | A climbing line into the next area |
| Prepare supplies | Water sources, caves, and bivouacs |
| Explore farther | Letters, belongings, and other cave entrances |
| Reduce retries | Next rest stop and a foothold for retreat |

Frequently asked questions
Is there a grade table for every route?
This page covers confirmed in-game terrain and decision procedures. Real-world climbing grades and invented fixed distances are not presented as game data.
Must I climb the visible wall straight up?
No. Compare footholds, piton-compatible rock, and supply sources, and consider detours to either side.
