The same button changes function with the in-game situation. Distinguish preparing a piton from actions after placement.
Recovery order on a wall
Instead of only moving onward, establish a supporting position before reaching with the next hand.
- First check support from the limbs you are not moving. Do not target a point that leaves the body severely overextended.
- Find holds for your feet and avoid continually hauling the body upward using only hands.
- If the selected limb differs from your intention, switch to manual selection and make small position adjustments.
- Once stable, shake your limbs to rest. If the yellow posture display, heavy breathing, or trembling persists, recover before climbing farther.
- If no natural resting posture is possible, use a piton in suitable rock.
This is an in-game control decision order, not real-world mountaineering instruction or safety standards.
Pitons also provide rest stops
Hanging from a secured piton lets you recover stamina and handle your backpack. Decide to place one before becoming completely exhausted.

| Check | Response if unsuccessful |
|---|---|
| Whether nearby rock supports placement | Normal pitons cannot be used in hard, glossy brown rock; find another surface |
| Whether pitons remain | Check Climbot's recovery and fragment recycling |
| Whether you are hanging | Do not assume placement alone means resting; perform the action to put your weight on it |
| Whether you checked your next direction | While recovering, inspect side ledges as well as above |

A piton is not itself the camp save action. Do not confuse resting/securing with save locations.
Equipment for ice walls
Pointing a hand or foot at ice automatically uses the corresponding ice axe or foot spikes. There is no invented unlock procedure involving buying them at another shop.
- Distinguish whether the targeted surface is ice or rock.
- If grip is poor, use the striking action to break the ice.
- Striking also consumes stamina; check the hold instead of repeatedly striking every time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read remaining stamina?
Use Aava's breathing, body trembling, and the resting posture display. If sound is hard to interpret, visual breathing feedback is available in settings.
Automatic selection moves the wrong foot
Standard PS5 controls select limbs with R1 and the right stick. Confirm the intended limb before making a large reach.
