Diagnosing causes
Similar failures require different responses depending on controls, rock type, or condition.

| Symptom | Check first | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Fatigue comes quickly | Whether limbs are fully overextended | Move footholds closer and rest once stable |
| The next limb will not move | Currently selected limb | Reselect manually |
| Cannot place a piton | Whether the rock is hard and brown | Find another surface suitable for normal pitons |
| Cannot handle luggage despite resting | Whether your weight is on the piton | Check hanging, not just placement |
| Poor grip on ice | State of the ice strike | Strike again using the dedicated action and check exertion too |
| Supplies run out | Whether you skipped earlier water sources or caves | Prioritize resupply over the next wall |

Adjust the burden in settings
Use settings added in updates. Adjust difficulty preferences separately from control readability.

| Option | Purpose | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Visual breathing feedback | Read exertion/fatigue without relying on sound alone | Check somewhere safe until familiar with the display |
| Automatic taping | Reduces input burden for finger care | Does not automate all supply management |
| No Survival | Reduces survival-management demands | Enabling it lets you refill survival gauges |
| PS5 Performance mode | Prioritize frame rate | Choose according to image-quality preferences |

Review after repeated failures
Changing every action at once makes the cause hard to identify.
- Recall your posture just before falling and check whether the large movement was a hand or foot.
- Next time, rest slightly before that point and establish support.
- If the same face is difficult, reroute to side cracks or ledges.
- If stable controls still do not sustain the climb, check hunger, hydration, cold, and remaining equipment.
- Adjust accessibility settings if needed and check causes one at a time.
Do not confuse unreleased content
Searching for added areas using only an old announcement date can mislead you. The September 20, 2026 announcement schedules On the Trail: Deep Water for October 29.
