ABOUT

What is Barotrauma?

Check the opening Campaign of the normal PC game through equipment, AI orders, missions and power, drainage and oxygen displays. Uses the standard Dugong to explain preparation separately for solo and co-op play.

ℹ️ Information organized from reference material Steam store page →

Edition: Normal PC Steam base game, app 602960, without mods. Covers the opening Campaign and basic/job tutorials. Uses the standard Dugong, approximately Normal difficulty and Jovian Radiation off. Distinguishes solo AI from co-op; individual talents, Workshop submarines, the late game and special modes are treated separately.

Verification scope: Public sources compared on 2026-10-04. The latest base-game patch confirmed through official Steam was v1.13.4.0, dated 2026-06-18. Home & Harbor is an upcoming, unreleased expansion. The game has not been launched; the current Japanese UI and reproduction of all wiring have not been checked.

Start with the opening Campaign in the normal game

Barotrauma is a 2D survival game where a submarine travels Europa's ocean and crew handle steering, repairs, defense and treatment. Assigning who will restore which device makes recovery easier to follow than having everyone rush toward the same fault.

Jobs are specialties; other jobs can take over normal repairs

Jobs change starting skills, gear and talents, but the job title alone does not make all normal repair or steering impossible. Consider required tools, skills and access permissions separately.

Jobs are specialties; other jobs can take over normal repairs: 6 entries
Example main roleRoutine assignmentCheck when someone is absent
CaptainManage route and position at the Navigation TerminalAssign a replacement helmsman rather than adding people who steer independently
EngineerMaintain the reactor and electrical systemsCheck the Screwdriver, Electrical skill and power system
MechanicHull breaches and pump/machinery maintenancePrepare a Welding Tool and Wrench separately
Security OfficerTurrets and intruders inside the submarineCheck turret assignment, firing arc and ammunition. Do not fire at allies outside
Medical DoctorDiagnose and rescue injured crewReport the condition and choose a treatment lead before stacking medicines
AssistantHelp with unfilled tasksStart by carrying supplies and checking quantities, then bring the necessary tools to support specialists

Talent-unlocked recipes and unique effects are not treated as shared by everyone. Co-op requires player assignments; solo requires AI order settings.

For your first trip, prepare a submarine that can depart and equipment that can bring you back

  1. Try selecting devices, repairing and replacing breathing tanks in basic/job tutorials. Enabling Tutorial at the start of a solo Campaign also introduces accepting missions
  2. Walk through the Dugong to locate the command room, reactor, junction boxes, oxygen generator, suit lockers, airlock and turret periscopes
  3. Open each person's tools and tanks and check remaining contents. Supplies in a crate and a usable item currently equipped are separate checks
  4. Assign steering, repairs and defense. In solo, check the order beside each crew name; in co-op, confirm a response
  5. Read the selected route and missions. If work outside is needed, decide who goes and who stays. Reduce the mission count before departure if underprepared

The Dugong normally has no Fabricator, Medical Fabricator or Deconstructor. Prepare at outpost facilities or shops instead of assuming you can always craft missing supplies underway.

Combine alarms, the Status Monitor and crew reports

There are clues to faults. Check the Dugong's alarms, reactor warning lights, Status Monitor and AI chat, then communicate who should go to which compartment. A single alarm may not identify the cause.

Combine alarms, the Status Monitor and crew reports: 5 entries
ClueWhat to readExample report
Status Monitor/General StatusCompartment name, water level, hull damage and any available oxygen reading"Engine room flooding. Mechanic: check the hole. Engineer: check electrical equipment."
Electrical ViewFault locations and electrical condition"The upstream junction box is stopped, rather than just the pump."
Reactor warningCheck heat and output separately"Temperature is high. Do not add fuel rods on your own."
AI chatMissing tools, unreachable destinations or no target"Return the spare Welding Tool to the shared locker."
Crew outside the submarinePosition, oxygen remaining and return route"Returning to the airlock. Keep the turret's line of fire clear."

Available readings depend on the submarine's sensors and connections. Missing numbers do not mean safety has been confirmed. These example callouts were written for this guide.

When older guides look different

When older guides look different: 5 entries
TopicChecked difference or cautionThis guide's approach
Standard submarine layoutTier 1 submarines and five other submarines were revised in 2026Do not treat old room locations or wiring diagrams as correct for every submarine
Sending crew outsideAn older personal guide forbids it across the board; a newer guide distinguishes Wait and FollowCheck routes, equipment and who remains aboard. AI success is not guaranteed
Supply sourcesOnboard crafting facilities vary by submarineDo not require crafting underway on the Dugong
Existing warning explanationsThe game does not automatically handle every danger, but alarms existReplace this with specific monitoring and communication methods
Future expansionHome & Harbor is unreleased on the official storeNo instructions for unlocking outpost management or new factions

These four articles cover early controls and diagnosis. They do not comprehensively cover every mission, every submarine's wiring, the ending or optimal talents.

FAQ

Barotrauma FAQ

Q1 Can I play solo? ▼
A

In Campaign you can order AI crew and switch the character you control. Assign repairs and turrets to AI rather than directly operating every device yourself, then check that their orders and supplies are in place.

Q2 Which job should a beginner choose? ▼
A

In co-op, consult existing crew and learn through assisting or helping with repairs. Mechanics and Security Officers still need their assigned devices and tools. No job makes you safe without learning anything.

Q3 Is it safe if no alarm is sounding? ▼
A

Alarms depend on wiring and submarine design. Check the Status Monitor, reactor and oxygen in equipped gear; inspect areas directly if readings are unavailable.

Q4 Do I need to buy an expansion? ▼
A

These opening steps cover the normal base game. Home & Harbor was unreleased on Steam on the check date, so planned outpost ownership is not assumed in the instructions.
