Shape of Dreams Build Guide | Reading Memory and Essence Activation Conditions

Fully Released: Basic Guide Reflecting v1.4 · Updated 2026-10-12

An Essence does not necessarily work identically wherever you attach it. First distinguish effects tied to the attached Memory from attack effects extending to basic attacks and other sources to avoid failed combinations.

Memories Are Usable Abilities; Essences Modify Them

Memories are moves or abilities you use. Attach Essences to them to change cooldowns, activation effects, and more. Finding a strong Essence does not complete a build: choose the ability that most easily meets its conditions.

For example, Essence of Efficiency reduces the attached Memory's cooldown. Do not assume it also shortens another main ability's cooldown.

  1. Select the Memory you use most often.
  2. Read its damage, scaling stat, and activation conditions.
  3. Read whether the Essence affects only its attachment or has conditions for affecting another target.
  4. Check how the display changes after attachment.
  5. After switching to a new ability, recheck Essence attachments too.

Read AD/AP and Activation Conditions Separately from Appearance

Do not choose upgrades solely from a gun-like or magical appearance. Read Attack Damage (AD) and Ability Power (AP) scaling in the Memory description. Even the same Traveler may want different stats depending on found abilities.

PropertyWhat to checkHow to choose
AD/AP and other scalingWhich stat increases the effectPrioritize upgrades matching your main ability's scaling
CooldownHow frequently it can be usedDecide whether to focus reduction on a frequently used move
Activation requirementDifferences between use, hit, basic attack, and other triggersCheck whether your actual attack sequence meets the condition
Healing and shieldsWhich actions grant themConsider whether they can be used while retreating
Movement and controlHow retreat routes or enemy movement are affectedCreate time and space to deal damage

Attack Effects and Basic Attack Requirements Differ

Attack effects apply to basic attacks and to Memories explicitly described as triggering attack effects. An effect specifying basic attack, however, does not necessarily apply to every offensive Memory.

Check separately which action grants an effect and which attacks can trigger it, rather than looking only at the attached Memory. Even for a Memory hitting multiple enemies, do not overlook a specified attack-effect percentage.

Description typeWhat to considerCommon misunderstanding
Cooldown change for the attached MemoryThat MemoryEvery ability's cooldown changes together
Grants attack effectsBasic attacks and Memories explicitly supporting themAssuming only the attached Memory is affected
Explicitly specifies basic attackBasic attacksAnother Memory triggers it merely because it looks like an attack
Specified attack-effect percentageThe percentage listed for the supported MemoryAlways the same amount or probability as a basic attack

Individual healing amounts and stack probabilities are not listed. Understand the description category, then check the current effect description.

Three Decisions Changed by v1.4

Check these changes before recreating an old build. Repeated casts, higher quality, and dodge replenishment may no longer produce the results in older descriptions.

AbilityCurrent changeWhat to check in your setup
Essence of InversionCooldown increase fixed at 20%; does not rise with qualityConsider the main ability's usage interval as well as quality
PermafrostThe same Memory's shield does not stack; Armor stacks up to 3 timesDo not assume repeated use of the same move stacks shields
Yubar's SupernovaRestores every dodge charge on use, including recastsTime its use with dodge replenishment in mind

If carrying separate Permafrost Memories, the cap applies individually. Distinguish the limit on the same Memory from interaction between separate Memories.

Checks When a Combination Does Not Work

Changing many things at once obscures which change helped. Check displays and activation conditions individually, separating insufficient damage from dying before using abilities.

  1. Check that upgrades match your main ability's scaling stat.
  2. Check that the Essence is attached to the intended Memory.
  3. Check that you perform the required use, hit, basic attack, or other action.
  4. Reread attack effects versus basic attack requirements.
  5. Check whether you are applying outdated quality, shield-stacking, or dodge-replenishment rules.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Q1 Do Essences work the same on every Memory? ▼
A

They generally relate to the attached Memory. Some conditions extend effects to other attacks, such as attack effects, so check both attachment and activation requirements.

Q2 Can a cooldown-reducing Essence shorten every ability? ▼
A

Essence of Efficiency affects the attached Memory in this example. This guide does not treat every Essence as affecting every ability.

Q3 Can repeated Permafrost use increase my shield? ▼
A

In v1.4, the same Permafrost's shield does not stack. Armor stacks up to 3 times, and separate Permafrost Memories are treated separately. Check shields and Armor independently.

Q4 Does higher-quality Inversion increase cooldowns more? ▼
A

The official v1.4 change fixes it at 20%. This guide does not use the old quality-dependent increase explanation.
