Shape of Dreams Early-Game Guide | Using Resources on the Way to the Boss

Fully Released: Basic Guide Reflecting v1.4 · Updated 2026-10-12

Early on, seek places to upgrade a familiar attack and places to restore your ability to survive. Do not assume all Gold is for upgrades or immediately dismantle found abilities; check the next shop and well first.

Check Basic Attacks, Dodge, and Memories Before Combat

Each Traveler fights differently. Instead of completing a complicated combination immediately, learn basic-attack and main-Memory ranges and the distance you can retreat after dodging.

  1. Check movement, basic attacks, dodge, and each Memory's controls in the tutorial and settings.
  2. Choose one easy-to-use attack and read its scaling stat and cooldown.
  3. Check non-attack options such as healing, shields, and movement.
  4. Leave a direction to move after dodging before approaching the next enemy.

Specific keys can be changed in settings. If you have remapped defaults, follow the on-screen control prompts.

Distinguish the Three Resources

Separate buying abilities, upgrading during an adventure, and progression between adventures. Using the wrong operation for the resource you need can leave you without your main ability and still unable to afford the desired upgrade.

ResourceMain useWhen to decide
GoldBuy Memories and Essences in shopsWhen replacing abilities or assembling combinations
Dream DustUpgrade existing abilities at wellsWhen you have a main ability and want to strengthen the current setup
StardustProgression between adventuresWhen checking shared and Traveler-specific growth before departure

Selling in a shop for Gold differs from dismantling for Dream Dust. Check attachment targets too, so you do not accidentally dispose of a needed Essence.

Choose Your Next Destination Using Shops, Wells, and the Hunter

Shops change your setup; wells improve the current one. Visit with a purpose: shop if you lack a main ability, or upgrade once you have one.

The Hunter expands its territory on the map. Rather than fixing a goal of visiting every location, balance necessary recovery with progress toward the boss.

Before a Boss, Check Scattered Upgrades and Dodge Availability

Improving an attack you can reliably land makes your approach easier to understand than lightly upgrading every attack. Check movement options for incoming attacks as well as damage.

In v1.4, some World Bosses gained harder actions on Ominous Dream and above. Patterns learned at lower difficulty may differ, so observe the first actions before increasing your attacks.

  1. Check your main Memory's scaling stat and attached Essences.
  2. If using a well, decide the needed upgrade first.
  3. Check remaining dodge, movement, and healing options.
  4. Watch boss behavior and find safe attack windows.

If Co-op Fails, Match Cross-Play and Mod Settings

Enabling mods on PC restricts Cross-Play with consoles. In that case, participation is limited to players with Cross-Play disabled. Check participants' settings first rather than repeatedly inviting people with different settings.

The September 21 hotfix corrected false mismatch messages despite matching settings and invitations allowing players with different settings to join. Check game updates together with settings rather than relying only on descriptions of old symptoms.

  1. Check game updates for both host and participants.
  2. Check whether the PC player uses mods.
  3. Match Cross-Play settings for all participants.
  4. For console play, disable PC mods and enable Cross-Play.
  5. If failures continue, record the error text and joining method.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Q1 Should I immediately dismantle unwanted abilities? ▼
A

First decide whether you want Gold to buy replacements or Dream Dust to improve current abilities. Selling and dismantling yield different resources, so check your next shop, well, and equipped Essences before disposing of anything.

Q2 Should I avoid visiting every location because the Hunter pursues me? ▼
A

This guide does not prescribe visiting every location. Make necessary purchases and upgrades while checking occupation and the path to the boss.

Q3 I cannot join co-op despite matching settings. ▼
A

First check whether the current hotfix is installed, whether mods are enabled, and Cross-Play settings. Not every connection environment has been tested, so matching settings is not guaranteed to fix it.
