Project Zomboid Survival Guide: Drinking Water, Food, Injuries and Your Base

Check early survival in Project Zomboid 42.21 from the symptoms currently displayed. Covers obtaining drinking water and checking its quality, food storage, in-game wound treatment, rest and beds, and preparations for power and water shutoffs.

Edition: PC Steam base game (app 108600), a new solo game without mods. Based on Stable 42.21 and standard Apocalypse rules. Rising is identified separately as a beginner practice example; differences in town, traits, Sandbox and MP settings are kept distinct.

Verification scope: The official “Stable Build: 42.21” label and the September 28 stable-release announcement were checked on 2026-10-04. This is separate from Build 41 (legacy41) and the earlier Build 42 Unstable branch. Basic processing quantities were compared with public B42 game data and 42.20.4 material, and the 42.21 change announcement was checked. Not every recipe has been verified in a running 42.21 game.

Identify what is missing before searching for supplies

Moodles are a starting point for spotting problems. Do not identify a cause from a single pain or sickness icon; review Health, food eaten, water drunk and recent combat or tasks. These explanations concern in-game mechanics.

Check obtaining water and making it drinkable separately

If taps work initially, filling both carried containers and spare containers at home gives you more options when the supply stops. Finding a container does not guarantee its contents or water quality are safe.

  1. Prepare an empty container, right-click a usable nearby water source and select the container under Fill/the refill option.
  2. After filling, select the container and read its contents, amount remaining and contamination display. Check quality before drinking.
  3. Do not reserve rain or river water for drinking untreated. Put it into a heat-compatible container, such as a cooking pot.
  4. Heat it using compatible equipment and confirm that the contamination label disappears before using it for drinking. Supervise heating and manage the fire or power afterward.
  5. Keep purified and untreated water in separate containers and locations. Recheck quality after mixing in other water.

Water and power have separate shutoff settings. Do not plan around a fixed shutoff day. 42.21 adds support for more purification containers, but this does not mean every container works in every oven.

Check eating order and refrigerator operation

Divide food at home into what to eat now, what to keep chilled and unopened reserves. This example treats farming and livestock as future plans rather than waiting for a harvest to solve initial hunger.

  1. Hover over food to check freshness, raw/cooked state and warnings about unsafe consumption.
  2. Use safely edible perishables first, keeping unopened canned food and similar items for the next outing or after power loss.
  3. If a can will not open, check the tools required in its right-click menu. Obtaining a can opener helps provide more options.
  4. Move food requiring cooking into the cooking equipment’s container and use the heat source. Confirm the cooked label, remove it and do not leave it until it burns.
  5. Move food for storage into the correct fridge/freezer container, then check power and food condition. After power loss, reassess remaining perishables and switch to shelf-stable reserves.

42.21 updates gradual warming of refrigerators and freezers after power loss and cooling applied to bags inside them. Storage time varies with food, settings and temperature; no fixed number of days is given here.

Do not confuse where to use a bandage or types of infection

Picking up a first aid kit does not treat a wound. Inspect its supplies and apply them to the injured part in Health. Stopping bleeding with a bandage is also different from solving every underlying cause.

  1. Get away from enemies or fire and secure safety. In solo, pause if needed and use H to inspect each body part.
  2. Prepare a clean bandage or fabric usable as an improvised bandage, then right-click the bleeding body part to apply it.
  3. After treatment, recheck the body-part display, bleeding and overall condition. Do not stop after one treatment if there are multiple wounds.
  4. Prepare a replacement before changing a dirty bandage, and change it somewhere safe. Do not ignore bleeding while the wound is exposed.
  5. Do not confuse a wound-infection label with zombie infection. For zombie bites, scratches and lacerations, do not assume ordinary wound care eliminates the infection risk.

Muscle strain/painArm, leg and other body-part conditionStop heavy carrying or repeated fighting and rest.Supplies for stopping bleeding do not also cure muscle strain.

Under normal Blood and Saliva settings, zombie bites transmit Knox infection, and scratches and lacerations can also transmit it. No fixed probability or time of death is given here. Sandbox settings changing transmission or lethality, and treatment mods, are separate conditions.

Choose a restful base by visibility, entrances and exits

Rather than fortifying a large house immediately, using one house where you can organize food and water, inspect outdoors and enter or leave makes shortages easier to identify. This is an example of selection criteria, not a claim that a particular house is always safe.

  1. Check the surroundings and interior, including an escape route other than the way you entered.
  2. Close window curtains. For windows without them, prepare sheets and use the appropriate hang action.
  3. Choose locations for the bed and everyday supplies without blocking entrances or passageways with belongings or new furniture.
  4. Choose a door or window to reinforce and prepare its tools and materials. Recheck the escape route before blocking every exit.
  5. Before sleeping, check fires, cooking equipment, entrances, nearby sounds and your condition. Inspect outside again after waking.

Curtains and planks do not silence noise. Watch alarms and enemy movement outside when deciding whether to stay in the house or leave.

Equipment alone does not solve power and water shutoffs

Finding generators or collectors, placing them and making them usable are separate stages. Secure tonight’s food and water first, then prepare facilities one stage at a time.

Use the same checks before leaving and after returning

Loot quantity alone does not determine whether an outing succeeded. If you used up food and water and drowsiness or pain has worsened, prioritize recovery over stockpiling next.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink rainwater as soon as I collect it?

Check the contamination label and keep untreated rainwater separate from drinking reserves. Heat it in a compatible container with a suitable heat source, then confirm the quality display has changed before using it.

Do water and electricity shut off on the same day?

They are separate settings. Do not assume the same day or a fixed day number; check your mode or Sandbox settings and prepare water and food reserves separately.

I have a first aid kit, but my health keeps falling.

The kit is a container. Check the bleeding body part in Health and treat it with the supplies inside. Hunger, thirst and illness can also cause problems, so do not identify the cause from one icon alone.

Does an infected-wound label mean zombification is certain?

Ordinary wound infection and Knox infection are different. Do not equate them from the Health infection label alone. Treating an ordinary wound with bandages or disinfectant also does not necessarily reverse zombie-transmitted infection.

Does all refrigerated food spoil the instant power fails?

42.21 includes gradual warming of fridges and freezers after power loss. Assume neither instant total spoilage nor indefinite storage; use actual freshness to decide eating order and when to switch to preserved food.
