Project Zomboid Processing Guide: B42 Material Quantities, Tools and Building Requirements

Basic processing for an early base in Project Zomboid 42.21. Use logs, bags, crates, rain collectors and campfires to check materials, tools, skills, actions and reasons you cannot craft.

Edition: PC Steam base game (app 108600), a new solo game without mods. Based on Stable 42.21 and standard Apocalypse rules. Rising is identified separately as a beginner practice example; differences in town, traits, Sandbox and MP settings are kept distinct.

Verification scope: The official “Stable Build: 42.21” label and the September 28 stable-release announcement were checked on 2026-10-04. This is separate from Build 41 (legacy41) and the earlier Build 42 Unstable branch. Basic processing quantities were compared with public B42 game data and 42.20.4 material, and the 42.21 change announcement was checked. Not every recipe has been verified in a running 42.21 game.

Use B crafting and the building interface on the left separately

In Build 42, distinguish crafting an inventory item from placing furniture or structures through the building interface. If a name is absent from the B41 right-click path, that does not necessarily mean its materials are unavailable.

  1. Decide whether the intended result is an inventory item or a facility placed on the ground. Open crafting with B or the building list through the icon on the left.
  2. If a name search fails, search by ingredient or output. Distinguish Japanese and English names, bag and tarp variants, and lower- and higher-tier names.
  3. Select the recipe and read its materials, tools, skills, knowledge and work-facility requirements. Resolve red/missing conditions one at a time.
  4. If ingredient alternatives are selectable, specify which items to use. Check that cloth, bags or tools you want to keep are not selected for consumption.
  5. Stand somewhere safe to craft and gather the required items in personal inventory or an accessible nearby container. Perform the recipe once first.
  6. Check the output quantity, consumed materials and tool condition. For building, also confirm access to the placement location and usability after placement.

This material table uses the overlap between public B42 game data and guide material. The sources identify minor versions from 42.13 through 42.20.4, or only B42. It is not a complete runtime check in the adopted Stable 42.21; prioritize the item’s displayed requirements if they differ.

Cloth is shared between screening, carrying and first aid

Before ripping every sheet you find, check window screening and bag needs. You cannot use the same sheet for several purposes simultaneously; this example starts with the purpose currently lacking.

Before dismantling a bag back into materials, check its contents and equipment state. Ripping fabric, applying a bandage and healing a wound are separate stages.

Follow the process from logs to planks

Crate and rain-collector requirements call for planks. A log may not substitute directly. Even apparently light work can increase load and muscle strain if sawing and carrying continue for too long, so stop at the amount needed.

  1. Read the facility’s required plank quantity first.
  2. Prepare a log and a compatible saw, then perform Saw Log once.
  3. Check that you gained 3 planks, retained the tool and are not carrying too much.
  4. Move the materials near the intended location and recheck quantities in the building interface.

Do not judge a tool solely by its appearance or the name “saw”; check whether it is an accepted recipe option. Tools may deteriorate even when not consumed whole like an ingredient.

Materials for facilities used in an early base

Read quantities against the specified recipe’s requirements. Do not invent conversions between nail boxes, bundles and display units; check that the screen shows the requirement met. This table is limited to the basic crate, small/large rain collectors and campfire.

Rain-collector hammers are also retained tools. Check accepted tools in the recipe and choose a compatible one, such as a claw hammer. This table excludes conversions between old capacity units and liters, barricade HP and durability guarantees.

Placing stones does not light a fire

Prepare campfire construction materials, ongoing fuel and the items needed for initial ignition separately. Cooking or water purification also requires a container for the contents.

  1. Build the campfire with 3 stones. Choose a working location away from flammable objects and your usual walking route.
  2. Right-click it and add usable fuel through Add Fuel. Do not select books or materials you want to keep.
  3. Keep matches/a lighter and usable ignition materials in accessible inventory, then read the Light Fire options.
  4. Once lit, move the cooking target into the campfire container and monitor cooking or water-quality displays.
  5. When finished, remove needed items and manage the fire before leaving. Do not step into the burning area.

Calculation example: 1 crate and 1 small rain collector

This example assumes Carpentry/Woodworking 3 and makes one basic wood crate and one small garbage-bag rain collector. Adding requirements before sawing makes unnecessary carrying and shortages easier to spot.

  1. Check Carpentry/Woodworking 3 with L and open the requirements for the basic crate and small bag-based collector in building.
  2. Choose somewhere for the materials, then gather a compatible hammer, saw, logs, nails and garbage bags.
  3. If sawing logs 3 times, confirm the result is 9 planks. Take a break if weight or muscle strain worsens partway through.
  4. Place the crate indoors clear of passageways and the small collector outdoors where rain reaches it.
  5. Check that the crate accepts items, then check the collector’s amount and quality after rain. Crafting it and having drinking water ready are separate outcomes.

This is an original arithmetic example based on published recipes, not a record of carrying everything in one trip during play. Carrying capacity, rainfall, days of drinking water and uses for leftovers are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

I cannot find a rain collector after pressing B.

B opens crafting. Open the building icon on the left and look for rain collectors under Outdoors. Also check small/large and garbage-bag/tarp recipes and the required Carpentry level.

I gathered planks and cloth for the Build 41 campfire kit.

The B42 Campfire building material checked for this article is 3 stones. Fuel and ignition supplies are also needed after construction. Check building instead of reusing the old kit’s material list.

I read a skill book but cannot build a crate.

Skill books apply an XP multiplier to the relevant skill. Check the actual Carpentry/Woodworking level with L, whether it meets the basic crate’s requirement of 3, and whether the tools and materials are recognized.

Do I need both 4 garbage bags and 1 tarp?

The small collector’s bag and tarp variants are separate recipes. Along with 4 planks, 4 nails and a compatible hammer, use either 4 garbage bags or 1 tarp according to the selected recipe.

Does a barricade require 1 nail or 2?

A discrepancy remains: B42 building data lists 1, while right-click barricading sources list 2. Both paths have not been checked in a running 42.21 game, so this article does not declare one value correct. Prioritize the requirements for the action you actually select.
