Project Zomboid Early-Game Guide: Movement, Equipment, Combat and Entering Houses
PC controls in Project Zomboid 42.21, divided into movement, inventory, visibility, melee combat and entering or leaving buildings. Check why an input fails and which signs mean it is time to end an outing.
Edition: PC Steam base game (app 108600), a new solo game without mods. Based on Stable 42.21 and standard Apocalypse rules. Rising is identified separately as a beginner practice example; differences in town, traits, Sandbox and MP settings are kept distinct.
Verification scope: The official “Stable Build: 42.21” label and the September 28 stable-release announcement were checked on 2026-10-04. This is separate from Build 41 (legacy41) and the earlier Build 42 Unstable branch. Basic processing quantities were compared with public B42 game data and 42.20.4 material, and the 42.21 change announcement was checked. Not every recipe has been verified in a running 42.21 game.

Start practice with one house and a route back
The baseline is solo without mods. The control-learning example uses Rising and occupations and traits whose effects you understand. You do not need to add numerous negative traits to follow this article.
- Check movement and combat in the tutorial. When starting a new game, record the branch, mode and whether mods are enabled.
- Pause first after starting. Check inventory, hand equipment, Health, moodles and the doors and windows of the current room.
- Keep the first objective to gathering nearby drinking water, food and first aid supplies, then returning to a place to rest.
- Before testing keys outdoors, check equipment and container transfers in a visible area inside the house.
- If the game is too harsh, review settings such as zombie population and infection one at a time in the next new Sandbox game. Do not mix results from altered settings with standard-rule results.

| Starting conditions | What to check | Why record it? |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Rising or Apocalypse | Enemy, resource and survival conditions differ. |
| Occupation/traits | Starting skills and effects on carrying or condition | The same load or task can impose a different burden. |
| Time and networking | Paused solo or MP | Safety while reading inventory differs. |
| Display/input | Key bindings and Japanese labels | Do not confuse changed keys or translation differences with an unavailable action. |

A town’s name alone does not determine beginner safety. Prioritize the enemies in front of you, the visible interior and another exit.
Basic PC inputs and observable results
These are the basic unchanged keyboard and mouse inputs. Distinguishing a press, a hold and a right-click on a target helps reduce accidents.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action/target | Required item/state | How to use it | Version/settings differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk/face a direction | A passable destination | W/A/S/D. While aiming, face the mouse direction. | Prioritize the bindings in Options. |
| Run | Condition and equipment that allow running | Use Left Shift. | Do not use it constantly. Check Sprint in settings rather than importing old Alt instructions. |
| Crouch | C is assigned | Toggle with C and check the stance. | This does not make you invisible. |
| Aim in melee | Weapon equipped | Hold Left Ctrl or the right mouse button to face the target. | Check whether your current settings use a hold or toggle. |
| Attack | Correct aim and reach | Left-click while maintaining aim. | Results differ with weapon, condition and multi-hit settings. |
| Shove/stomp | Target in front, close or on the ground | Space: shove a standing enemy or stomp a fallen one. | Do not force a stomp when other enemies are nearby. |
| Door/window | Approach the target | Press E once or choose from the right-click menu. | Holding E performs another action, such as climbing through a window. Do not repeatedly tap it. |
| Inventory | Within reach of the item/container | Use I, right-click the item or drag it to transfer. | Distinguish bags, personal inventory and nearby containers. |
| Condition/skills | Able to open the panel | H for Health, L for skills. | In MP, the world does not wait while panels are open. |
| Crafting and building | A safe place to stand | B opens crafting. For furniture, also use the building icon on the left. | Some B42 material lists no default key for the building UI. |
| Pause/speed | Solo | F2 pauses; F3 returns to normal speed. | Do not use this as an MP pausing method. |
| Call out | Q is assigned | Q shouts; holding it accesses emotes. | Beware of accidental input when trying to stay quiet. |

Distinguish picked-up items, equipped items and bag contents
Picking something up does not mean it is immediately available for an attack or treatment. Transfer a small amount first and check which container received it.
- Open personal inventory and nearby containers with I, then select the container holding the desired item.
- Move the item into personal inventory. Stay nearby during the transfer and check both its destination and completion.
- Right-click the weapon and choose its appropriate equipment option, such as primary hand or both hands. Check that it appears in the hand slot.
- Equip a wearable bag before moving items into it. A bag carried in one hand can compete for hand slots with a two-handed weapon.
- Check current weight and Heavy load, then store items that are not urgent, such as crafting planks or books. Carry only outing essentials.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | In-game display to check | Action | How to confirm success |
|---|---|---|---|
| You have a weapon but are unarmed | Primary/secondary hand equipment slots | Take it out of the bag and equip it. | The hand slot and stance change. |
| Picking up a bag does not reduce the load | Equipment position and bag contents | Equip it on the back/in a hand and move the items into it. | Recheck its contents and total weight. |
| You cannot find a needed item | Selected personal inventory, bag, floor or furniture | Switch containers one at a time. | Identify where the item is. |
| A pickup stops partway through | Untransferred items and distance | Check safety, then resume near the target. | The required items reach the destination. |
| You cannot run | Heavy load / Cannot sprint / leg condition in Health | Check load, heavy equipment and injury separately. | Wait for the displays to improve before returning outdoors. |

Inspect a container before using the take-all button. Increasing carrying capacity does not by itself solve the burden of weight during combat.
Check unseen directions and noise first
No enemies on screen does not prove that the space behind a building or behind you is clear. Consider your walking route, visibility and noise together.
- Before going outside, check what you can see through a window. After opening the door, aim toward your intended direction and look again.
- Check the far side of your destination and side paths, then choose one direction for retreat.
- Normally, walk. Use running, shouting, breaking windows and firing guns with the expectation that they make noise nearby.
- If enemies increase, stop exploring, break line of sight using obstacles or buildings and gain distance. Do not make an unfamiliar interior the end of your escape route.
- Before stopping because you think it is safe, check behind you again. Enemies may approach again even if you believe you lost them.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Situation | What to check | Next action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are crouching | Stance and enemy reactions | Use cover and distance as well. | Assuming C alone prevents detection |
| A corner | Beyond the corner and the route behind you | Advance gradually until you can see. | Running around the corner |
| A loud noise occurred | Horde movement and the escape route | Leave the current loot for later. | Waiting because you assume being indoors is always safe |
| Reading a map or list | Whether time is advancing | Pause to read in solo if needed. | Assuming opening a panel pauses the game |

Check equipment, reach and condition when learning combat
First test the controls against an isolated enemy where there is room around you. There is no guarantee that a particular number can always be defeated or that walking always lets you escape.
- Check the weapon’s equipment slot and condition. Do not treat a broken item, or one with a damaged handle/head, like a new one.
- Aim toward the enemy and attack from a distance that connects. If using aiming outlines, check their target setting in Options.
- Use Space to shove and create distance when an enemy closes in. Do not try to solve being surrounded by repeatedly shoving.
- Stomp only when the enemy is down and the surroundings allow it. If another enemy approaches, change position instead of following up.
- Watch Endurance, Tiredness and Pain, and use H to check muscle strain and arm/leg wounds. Stop fighting if they worsen.
- Break line of sight, put down the load and rest somewhere safe. If drowsiness or muscle strain remains after breathlessness clears, do not rush into another fight.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | In-game display to check | Action | How to confirm success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attacks have become weaker | Endurance / Tiredness / arm condition | Stop fighting and move somewhere safe. | Reconsider after the relevant display improves. |
| Swinging the weapon causes more pain | Muscle Strain in Health | Take a break from tasks imposing the same strain. | Recheck the body part and pain. |
| Even running is difficult | Weight, leg injuries and equipment restrictions | Reduce the load and inspect your condition. | Movement and the displays improve. |
| More enemies are arriving | Open space behind and beside you | Interrupt the errand and retreat. | Check again after leaving the horde behind. |

Muscle strain, endurance and drowsiness are separate issues. No fixed number of minutes sitting is presented as a full recovery from muscle strain. Do not confuse a medicine’s effect with eliminating the injury or infection itself.
Do not start by breaking a window when a door will not open
- Inspect the visible interior and surroundings from outside, and check for a usable exit on the other side.
- Approach and operate the door once. If it will not open, inspect another door or window and change your route.
- Read the right-click options when using a window. Distinguish opening it from climbing through it, and do not jump through a broken window with glass remaining.
- Once inside, inspect the visible part of the room. Treat space beyond a closed door as unchecked, and do not block an exit you need.
- If an alarm sounds, stop collecting supplies, leave the house and retreat. Quiet returning does not mean nearby enemies have disappeared.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action/target | Required item/state | How to use it | Version/settings differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open a window | Within reach of the window | Press E or right-click. | Different from holding or repeatedly tapping it |
| Broken window | Remaining glass and an available tool | Confirm the remove-glass option, then check again before climbing through. | Do not equate before and after removal, or footwear and hand protection. |
| Curtains | Existing curtains or a sheet | Use the close/hang option. | Blocks sight, not a physical barrier |
| Barricade | Appropriate tools and materials | Check the relevant door/window or building-interface option. | B42 sources disagree on nail quantities; prioritize the displayed requirement. |
| Upstairs exit | Safe stairs or an installed escape route | Check the landing point and equipment. | Do not treat jumping from a window without an installed rope as an escape route. |

Being inside a house is different from having checked its safety. Alarms, enemy hearing and attacks on buildings differ by implementation and settings.
Checklist for ending the first outing
The aim on returning home is to become ready for the next outing, rather than use every item you collected.
- Check doors, windows and the surroundings before organizing the load.
- Treat wounds, drink and eat, then assess rest and sleep separately.
- Choose one type of item needed next. For example, if water containers are lacking, find them before making furniture.

| After returning | Items to store/retain | Check before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Organize supplies | Store materials and books; keep weapons, water and first aid supplies accessible. | Check weight and hand equipment. |
| Rest | A safe place to sit/rest and a bed | Check breathlessness, drowsiness and pain separately. |
| Next outing | Missing supplies and the return route | Spare capacity and adequate condition |

Frequently asked questions
I picked up a weapon but cannot attack.
Check which container holds it and what is equipped in your hands. Move it into personal inventory, equip it, then face the enemy while aiming and attack. Simply having it inside a backpack does not mean it is equipped.
Will crouching with C keep zombies from finding me?
It makes detection less likely, but stance alone does not ensure safety. Also consider line of sight, distance, noise, cover and enemy reactions.
Combat is still difficult after resting.
Check endurance depletion, drowsiness, injury and B42 muscle strain separately. Inspect body parts with H. If sleepy, find a safe bed; for muscle strain, take a break from strenuous tasks.
Pressing E at a window does something I did not intend.
Pressing and holding E perform different actions. Until familiar with them, right-click the window and choose opening, climbing through or removing glass individually.
Can F2 safely pause multiplayer too?
Do not assume solo pausing applies. Other players and the server world keep progressing, so secure a safe place before checking settings or inventory.
