Check location, costs and workers before adding a building
Representative normal Viking buildings, including Stag. Wood means Wood, money means Kröwns and stone means Stone. Values are unmodified published baselines adjusted for official updates. With clan abilities, knowledge, difficulty or Conquest bonuses, use the construction button's display.
- Select a zone and read its owner, enemies and building slots used / maximum
- For a resource building, check the required terrain or deposit in that zone; visible trees or water alone are not enough
- Check construction cost separately from ongoing upkeep
- Choose the villagers to assign after completion and whether they can leave current food or firewood work
- Build, wait for the worker to arrive and finish, then assign the required job. Reselect the building and check its worker count.
Worker limits are simultaneous job slots, separate from Warband capacity, House population capacity and zone building slots. Many empty buildings do not automatically create workers or soldiers.

| Hunter’s Lodge | Woodcutter's Lodge built; zone with Deer | 80 Wood / 2 workers, 3 when upgraded | Hunter | Reduced output in normal winter; not the job of killing wild enemies |
| Fisherman’s Hut | Woodcutter's Lodge built; lake zone with Fish | 80 Wood / 2 workers, 3 when upgraded | Fisherman | No production loss in normal winter; separate from Kraken's coastal building |
| Food Silo | Zone with the relevant food resource; Woodcutter's Lodge | 80 Wood / no assigned workers; capacity +300 | No assigned workers | Supports eligible food production in the same zone; does not replace staffing a farm |
| Mine | Owned zone with a usable deposit; Woodcutter's Lodge | 50 Wood + 10 Kröwns / check worker slots in the building display | Miner | Deposits are finite; reassign workers after depletion. Horse uses a different mining system. |

Apart from the Town Hall, these representative buildings have Kröwns upkeep. Older sources disagree on annual upkeep by difficulty, so use the selected building and Kröwns breakdown rather than a fixed-price list.

Check upkeep even for unstaffed buildings. Do not expand on the assumption that a nonproducing building is free to retain. This is not an exhaustive table of DLC or Southern Kingdom buildings.
Upgrade the Town Hall first, then read each building's effects
Upgrade improves a building; Develop Area adds a zone building slot. They are different actions. The values below are representative costs before clan or knowledge discounts.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Target | Base upgrade cost | Main change | Common confusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town Hall | 100 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 10 Stone | Enables upgrades to other normal buildings; population cap +2 | Selecting another building first does not meet this prerequisite |
| Scout Camp | 50 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 5 Stone | Scout slot +1 and enemy-territory scouting | Exploring more owned land is not a substitute |
| Woodcutter’s Lodge | 50 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 5 Stone | Woodcutter slot +1 and production modifier | The old 10-Stone requirement changed in April 2025 |
| House | 50 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 5 Stone | A further +3 population capacity; Definitive Edition adds +5% population growth | Distinguish the +5 from a new House from the slots added by upgrading |
| Fields/Hunter’s Lodge/Fisherman’s Hut | 100 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 10 Stone | Job slot +1 and relevant production modifier | New villagers do not automatically arrive to fill upgraded job slots |
| Trading Post/Marketplace/Longship Dock | 100 Wood + 10 Stone | Job slot +1 and relevant production modifier | Do not add the 50 Kröwns used by other buildings universally |
| Training Camp | 100 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 10 Stone | Warband slot +1 and military improvement | Separate from forging weapons; military effects changed in 2025 |
| Food Silo | 100 Wood + 50 Kröwns + 10 Stone | This Silo's total capacity contribution becomes 500, with a relevant production bonus | Capacity does not award actual food |
| Develop Area | Normally 100 Kröwns | Adds 1 building slot in that zone | Does not add resource terrain or worker slots within a building |

Mines and Carved Stones do not necessarily upgrade at the same cost as ordinary production buildings. If no button appears, check whether the building can be upgraded before continuing to mine more Stone.
Diagnose buildings that will not work or cannot be placed
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | Zone / assignment checks | Action to try | Clan differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| The build button is gray | Terrain resources, building slots, prerequisite buildings and cost | Open zone and building descriptions; check missing requirements one by one | Do not apply the common table to special construction systems |
| A lake is nearby, but fishing is unavailable | Does that zone show Fish? | Switch to a lake zone containing Fish | Kraken's Fishing Cabin is a different building that also supports coastal placement |
| The zone looks empty, but you cannot build | Used / maximum building slots and placement requirements | Reconsider unnecessary buildings, another zone or Develop Area | Read the clan description for building-slot bonuses |
| Construction never finishes | Assigned builders and their path | Select a worker and right-click the unfinished building | Civilian specialists can build directly in current PC play |
| A completed building has 0 workers | Worker slots and the selected unit's job | Select a Villager and right-click the building | Clans without ordinary Villagers differ |
| Workers are present, but no ore is produced | Remaining deposit and selected resource | Move to another deposit or return the Miner to another job | Horse does not follow the normal Miner example |
| A Silo alone does not solve the food shortage | Is eligible food production active in the same zone? | Assign Farmers, Hunters or Fishermen first | Do not assume Silos affect every food source of every clan |
| More markets, but the resource you want is unavailable | Shared stock and Merchant count | Wait for restocking; check assignments and alternative sources | Distinguish clan/knowledge price and restocking modifiers |
| Upgrade is unavailable | Town Hall upgrade, Wood, Kröwns, Stone and the target building | Meet prerequisites, then reselect the building | Use the displayed cost if free upgrades or discounts apply |
| A building is burning | Ownership, absence of enemies and repair cost | Secure the area, then right-click to send a worker to repair | Also check clan-specific unit abilities for job changes and repairs |
| Healers are assigned, but health does not recover | Are the patient's zone or healing-building zone under attack? | Bring injured units to safe owned land and deal with the raid | Special healing abilities have different requirements from ordinary Healers |

Visually empty land and available building slots are different. Read resource icons, ownership and assignment counts before deciding to dismantle or reclaim facilities.
Act before upkeep consumes all your Kröwns
- Identify the cause of the negative balance while Kröwns remain in stock
- Select new buildings and check upkeep and actual workers. Do not leave production buildings unstaffed.
- Activate money-producing jobs. Choose Merchants or Sailors by terrain, desired secondary output and available villagers.
- Read what trade routes export and receive. A route sending Kröwns to Miklagard is not an ordinary export earning money.
- Compare reuse and dismantling for currently unnecessary buildings, such as depleted Mines. Removing workers does not remove building upkeep.
- Before dismantling, check rebuilding costs and lost capacity/effects. Do not destroy essential food and defense buildings in succession to solve a cash shortage.
This is an economic-check sequence, not a guarantee that every building pays for itself within a fixed number of years.
Example: choose what belongs in one food zone
Suppose a newly claimed zone has Deer, Stone and 3 displayed free building slots. This is an example of avoiding competing uses, not a solution for a fixed map.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Candidate | Immediate gain | Later requirement | Decision guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter’s Lodge | Food-worker slots | Workers and winter reserves | If the Food balance is weak, prioritize both construction and assignments |
| Mine | A mining job for building-upgrade Stone | Miners and reassignment after mining | Once depleted, the building slot can return to another use |
| Food Silo | Storage capacity and eligible production bonus within the zone | Construction Wood and Kröwns upkeep | Staff the food building first, then assess capacity and production needs |
| Another use, such as a House | Addresses a current shortage such as population capacity | Competes for slots with food, mining and defense | Compare other zones instead of placing everything here |

You cannot copy the same combination onto land with a different slot count. Read forests and resource terrain per zone rather than judging production only by the number of steps to visible trees, deer or ore.
Frequently asked questions
Do buildings produce resources simply by existing?
Most production buildings need workers in the matching job. Check assignments after completion. Houses and Food Silos are examples that do not take workers.
The Woodcutter's Lodge upgrade needs less Stone than an old table says
Its standard Stone upgrade cost changed from 10 to 5 in April 2025. Clan and knowledge discounts also apply, so check the actual button's cost.
Villagers will not gather in a zone containing a food building
Check whether the unit is a Villager, another specialist or working on construction. Then check whether the zone has a building usable for food gathering. To work a specialist building, assign the unit directly to it.
Do two markets have separate stocks?
Current sources say market resource stocks are shared. Before adding buildings, check Merchants and restocking. Old explanations of separate stocks cannot be applied unchanged.
Must I immediately destroy every unused building?
Compare upkeep, rebuilding cost and upcoming use. Do not judge a depleted Mine and a Training Camp needed during a raid by the same dismantling rule.
