LIMBO beginner guide: PC controls, grabbing objects and retries
Movement, jumping and grabbing in PC LIMBO, including their requirements. Check water and movement restrictions, and distinguish death retries from chapter revisits.
Edition: LIMBO PC Steam story, app 48000, Windows. Excludes old Xbox 360 extra eggs and chapter numbering, console buttons and INSIDE abilities.
Verification scope: Public sources checked on 2026-10-04. The game was not launched, and the current build number and frame-level measurements were not checked. Scene landmarks take priority; chapter-number differences between sources are noted.

Check PC inputs one at a time
Standard keyboard controls use the arrow keys and Ctrl. Follow your own bindings or controller prompts if those differ.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action | PC input / setting | Requirement | If it does not respond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move left or right | ←/→ | Standing on usable floor in a normal state | Check each direction separately |
| Jump | ↑ | Standing on a platform or jumping from a rope or similar support | Try simultaneous movement and jump on flat ground |
| Push or pull a box | Hold Ctrl and Left/Right arrow | Approach the side of the object and hold while within grabbing reach | Return to the side rather than jumping or standing on top |
| Climb a ladder or rope | ↑/↓ | Hands or feet are attached | Check you are not merely pressing directions in midair |
| Move down from an edge | Down arrow near the edge | An edge you can descend or a reachable platform exists | Do not replace this with an unrestricted drop from a height |
| Pause / check settings | Esc for menu | During play | First distinguish whether the menu itself responds |

Playdead's PC FAQ describes editing bindings in settings.txt. The process assumes quitting the game, keeping a copy of the original file and checking its existing key definitions. Save files do not need to be modified.
Separate touching from grabbing and moving
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Object | Response showing success | Next action to try | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box / cart | Hands attach to the edge and boy and object move together | Keep holding while moving left or right | Not every background box or fixed object is movable |
| Rope / ladder | The posture changes from airborne movement to hanging | Use up/down for height and left/right for swinging | Some rope jumps grab automatically. Do not apply box controls unchanged |
| Short ledge | Hands catch the edge and the body pulls up | Jump within reachable height | If out of reach, reconsider platform position and takeoff point |
| Lever / handle | The device moves and sound or water level changes | Observe whether changes remain after releasing the control | Some objects also activate danger at the same time |

Checking contact position, holding and direction in order makes input failures easier to identify than repeatedly tapping grab. This is an editorial checking sequence.
Checks before testing water or falls
This is not a game where falling into deep water lets you simply swim across. Even when transporting something that floats, usable standing area and height to the exit are separate requirements.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | What to observe | Safe action to try | Check after restarting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entering water quickly causes failure | Platforms above the water and the land's edge | Move objects from dry land and leave a surface you can stand on along the way | Did you return to the position before entering water? |
| You slide off a box | The box's tilt and water level | Choose the distance to the exit before boarding and stand on the less tilted side | Has the box drifted? |
| You cannot reach a rope | Takeoff point, rope height and swing range | Treat it separately from a flat-ground jump and jump from near the rope | Did a box or cart return to its original position? |
| You die when dropping from a height | Intermediate branches, ropes and low ledges | Look for a route descending one level at a time | Are you dropping directly from the top? |

Unmeasured fixed water depths or safe fall heights are not listed. Nor does the guide claim all water contact is instantly fatal or every box floats.

Action example 01: early platforms and traps
This section includes specific solutions just after the start.
- At the first structure, pull the box below toward you. Climb from the box onto the structure, jump to the rope and descend.
- Where a high edge is unreachable after crossing, pull the landed boat under the ledge and use it as a step.
- Do not step on the center of a ground trap. Move it from the side to create room to jump over.
- At the weighted rope and trap, place the trap directly beneath the weight, jump to the rope and climb above the trap's closing height.
On restarting, do not assume the trap is already moved. First check where the earlier box, boat and trap returned.

Action example 02: something white on the head
A state that fixes movement direction differs from a broken key.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| State | What you can do | What you cannot do / failure example |
|---|---|---|
| A white parasite is attached | Jump, and press opposite the walking direction to slow down | Do not assume you can turn freely as normal |
| Enter a lit area | Movement direction switches | Do not assume passing one light removes the state |
| A creature overhead removes parasites | Use a box or similar object to gain height and jump within reach | Simply passing beneath may not bring your head high enough |

In the concrete example, proceed through the left light, right light and box repositioning in order, then gain the height needed for the overhead creature. Where water levels change, manage both direction and water level. Open the corresponding walkthrough section for details.
Choose retries according to the goal
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action | What to redo | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Retry after death | The obstacle from a nearby checkpoint | Check the reset state of objects and devices too |
| Resume after stopping | Continue from saved progress | Exact reproduction of the moment you quit is not guaranteed |
| Chapter selection | Practice or collectibles in earlier scenes | Note the original scene image; separate from full-run requirements |
| New Game | A new full-run attempt from the beginning | Do not delete saves merely to collect something |

Sources confirm using chapter selection for collectibles. This guide does not guarantee, from in-game testing, that quitting at any instant after an egg pickup always saves it. Check the pickup indication and state after revisiting.
Frequently asked questions
I grab a box but cannot move it
Stand beside the box rather than on top, hold grab and add left/right movement. Also check movement and jump on flat ground, and distinguish whether the object is movable.
Do ropes need the grab key?
Some jumps automatically grab a rope. First see whether your hands reach it, then check vertical movement and swinging separately after hanging.
I suddenly cannot walk the other way
You may have entered a scene-specific movement restriction. Check whether both directions work on ordinary floor; if the head's state changed, read collapsed Action example 02.
Does every failure restart from the beginning?
Normal deaths retry from a nearby checkpoint. Distinguish this from chapter selection for earlier scenes and full-run attempts from the start.
