First, separate three reasons an action fails
INSIDE is a puzzle platformer by Playdead. Combine the boy's movement, jumping and grabbing to progress. Some situations require solving a mechanism, and others require timing its execution.
- If the boy does not move at all, open the menu with Esc and check keyboard bindings
- If an object does not respond, hold grab while applying a direction and check whether his hands grip it
- If the mechanism moves but you still fail, distinguish action order from the moment light, sound and other objects align
Overlooking something is not the only possible problem. Chases and moving mechanisms also require timing.
Choose a guide by what you see

| Problem | Scene landmark | Guide to read | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsure how to grab or push | Early refrigerator, boxes or levers | Beginner guide: PC controls | The default is right Ctrl. Do not assume left and right Ctrl are interchangeable |
| Repeatedly caught during a chase | Lights, dogs, vehicles or fallen trees | Main walkthrough: forest / town and procession | Distinguish cover where you can stop from sections requiring continued running |
| Unable to reach an underwater exit | Surface, grates or red buttons | Beginner swimming guide / the relevant main-game scene | Find a return surface and next platform before entering |
| A mechanism involving people or boxes will not work | Overhead device, pressure plate or numerical display | Main walkthrough: devices / mine | Track your position, controlled people and movable objects separately |
| Stopped by a shockwave or searchlight | Bridge, shielding panel or overhead light | Main walkthrough: bridge / before the research facility | Look for shadows that cover your whole body, not merely darker scenery |
| Want to revisit collectibles | Scene thumbnails on the load screen | Collectibles and secrets guide | Note your current scene, then choose a previously reached scene |

Open subguides from the page footer. Headings avoid giving away complete ending or collectible solutions by themselves.
Turn observe your surroundings into specific checks
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Target | What to inspect | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Handle, rope or grate | Can the boy reach it? | Approach, grab, then add a direction |
| Box or cart | Can it serve as a platform or support something? | Compare the exit height with the available movement area |
| Lever and distant door | Does it stay open after releasing input? | Operate briefly from safety and observe whether it returns |
| Moving light or wave | Do its warning and danger arrive together? | Observe a full cycle from cover before moving |
| Other people | Do they move at the same time as you? | Track the others after one person reaches a wall or floor |

This inspection order is editorial advice organized from guide sources, not the only solution to any particular mechanism.
Continuing progress versus revisiting an earlier scene
After failure, retry from a nearby checkpoint. Selecting an earlier scene on the load screen instead revisits collectibles or mechanisms. These serve different purposes.
- To retry the recent obstacle, continue from the usual post-failure position
- For an earlier location, match load-screen thumbnails with walkthrough landmarks
- Note your current scene image so you know where to return after a detour
Deleting saves or creating new data is unnecessary for ordinary collectible revisits. Sources divide chapter numbers differently, so this guide uses scenery instead.
Dark visuals and violent content
Unsettling sound, light and character movement convey the situation. Failures such as capture or falls include violent depictions. If concerned, check the official store's mature-content description.
- If you can hear the game, use footsteps and device warning sounds as clues
- Do not move blindly through dark scenes; check in-game display settings
- You need not play in a single long session. On resuming, inspect a mechanism's current positions before repeating your last action
Playdead support lists a known issue with missing shadows. If the shadow itself is absent despite correct positioning, do not assume the puzzle solution is the only problem.
