First check your version and where the attempt failed

This is a top-down action game. Movement and aiming are separate, and progress comes from retrying short areas. Assuming that every enemy and the player always die in one hit will cause problems when exceptions appear.

  1. Note whether the launcher says Updated or Original. Do not test progress problems by deleting saves or overwriting saves between versions.
  2. Identify whether the failure happened on entry, while picking up a weapon, while finishing a downed enemy or on the way back.
  3. Check your location in chapter selection, then change just one action using the table for the same symptom.

On a first visit, aim to clear the area. High scores and collectibles do not need to be completed at the same time.

Separate a first playthrough from revisits

  1. On your first visit, check inputs and weapon changes in the beginner article.
  2. In the walkthrough, match the chapter name and visible room, then open only that answer.
  3. After finishing, use the chapter-selection display for missing items to return to the collectibles article.

These are examples for reducing mistakes, not a fixed fastest route through every enemy layout. Patrols and the weapon you hold change the response.

Version scope and Japanese display

The guide mainly covers the original Steam game's Windows Updated version. Original uses a different engine and save location; progress is not necessarily shared in both directions.

Checked itemHow to read the guide
Japanese displayAn official 2014 announcement describes adding Japanese to the launcher, while the current Steam language list marks Japanese unsupported. Check the actual launcher first.
Updated / OriginalDo not mix sources about display, saves and bugs. Steam Cloud guidance applies to Updated.
ControllerThis guide uses standard PC keyboard-and-mouse labels. Follow your own changed bindings.
Sequel and console versionsDo not add sequel character abilities, weapons or console-exclusive collectibles to the original Steam game's requirements.

This article does not verify Japanese display or saving by launching the current build. See the official product description for the game's strong violence.

FAQ

Hotline Miami FAQ

Q1 Does dying restart the entire game? ▼
A

In normal combat, you can quickly retry that area. Restarting a chapter and retrying an area are different. Check the entrance you resumed from and change just one action immediately before the failure.

Q2 Can I select Japanese despite the unsupported label? ▼
A

An official announcement says Japanese was added to the launcher, but this does not match the Steam product page's language list. Check the Updated launcher. Successful application in every environment has not been tested.

Q3 Why can I not defeat an enemy even with a weapon? ▼
A

The same attack may not work against every enemy type or state. Knocking an enemy down is also different from killing them. Check the collapsed exception table in the beginner article.

Q4 Will normal progress stop if I skip collectibles? ▼
A

Normal progress and optional collectibles can be treated separately. For detailed differences involving extra requirements, open only the relevant item in the collectibles article.
