Start with Unit Matchups

The common triangle favors swordsmen against archers, archers against axemen, and axemen against swordsmen. Plan merge and attack order first so you retain troops with favorable matchups.

Check the Resulting Unit Type After Merging

When merging different unit types, the larger group determines the resulting type. If numbers are equal, the destination's type is retained. Check the type change as well as the combined total.

You can also merge enemy groups with one another. Consolidating their unit types before using friendly troops can favor your main force. Effect cards or DLC-specific rules can change the result, however.

  1. Check enemy types and the friendly type you want to preserve.
  2. Check merged numbers and type, then create a favorable pairing.
  3. Use the preview to check survivors before committing.
  4. Review each battle's outcome before choosing the next merge and attack.

Use Number Previews to Check Your Assumptions

Enable Preview Battle Numbers under Options → Gameplay to see resulting troop numbers before moving. If you have cards that add effects when merging the same type, distinguish those effects from simple addition.

This guide covers matchups and action order. It does not provide hand-calculation formulas accounting for damage rounding and every special effect.
