ANIMAL WELL
ANIMAL WELL: Telephones, the Animal Flute and Shortcuts
Use a telephone to save, collect eight secret eggs to unlock the Animal Flute near the Egg Room, and test the flute at its shortcut statues. Those are three different actions. A useful return trip starts with a marked obstacle and a new tool interaction to try, rather than another full circuit of the same rooms.

Save at a telephone before exploring a new branch
A telephone is a save point. Interact with it instead of treating the room itself as a save trigger. Before a risky branch or a longer puzzle attempt, note the most recent telephone you used and how you would return from it. If you lose all health, the last telephone you interacted with is your return point.
This is different from selecting a discovered phone in a travel menu. Do not plan a route that depends on calling any other telephone from the current one. The Animal Flute’s shortcuts provide the travel system covered here.
A practical checkpoint routine is to save, inspect the nearby exits on the map, then choose one branch. If several attempts repeat the same long approach, look for a nearer telephone or an unopened shortcut before repeating the dangerous section again. A nearer save point shortens the route back to a puzzle; you still need to work out its solution.
Return to the Egg Room after eight eggs
The Animal Flute is available beside the Egg Room after you have collected eight secret eggs. The threshold unlocks access to its room; it does not put the tool directly into your inventory wherever you happen to find the eighth egg. Return and collect the flute from the newly accessible area.
You do not need one particular set of eight for this threshold. Choose eggs you can reach with your present tools instead of assuming an inaccessible chest must be the eighth. ANIMAL WELL supports nonlinear exploration, and a chest you cannot reach yet can remain a marked return target.
Before leaving, check that the flute is actually in your tools and test the directional input somewhere safe. Different directions produce different notes. Use the bindings shown by your own version rather than copying a controller button from another platform. Playing one note is enough for the basic statue interaction; longer songs are a separate puzzle.
Try one note at a flute statue
Open solution / late-game details
At a flute statue, play a note and inspect the shortcut that opens. Follow the opened route. In the travel room, play again to open available animal-head exits, then walk into the mouth for the route you want. Sounding a note is the trigger; you still need to take the passage it opens.
If a route is unavailable, inspect the corresponding area as you explore and activate its shortcut rather than assuming every head is usable immediately. Record which head leads to which part of your map as you use it. This creates a useful return plan without needing a copied map or a list of every later destination.
Practice with one short trip: save nearby, use an open route, note the arrival area, and identify the way back. Do this before relying on the shortcut in a difficult chase. Focus on learning where the shortcut goes and how to reach it before trying the other musical puzzles.
Give each return trip one test
The map and its stamps are most useful when a mark means something specific to you. Distinguish an unreachable ledge, a button you cannot hold, a closed shortcut and an animal that reacts to a tool. You do not need to know the final solution to make a useful note.
After gaining the flute, first revisit a marked statue or a room where sound seems relevant. Test a note, watch what changes, and stop to reassess. Do not replace observation with repeatedly playing a long sequence from an unrelated puzzle. Some musical effects are local to a particular room.
For a movement obstacle, use the tool that changes movement. B. Wand bubbles provide temporary platforms and help with descent, while the Disc offers horizontal travel and interactions with suitable switches. Their acquisition and basic use are in the linked guide. The flute adds sound and shortcuts; it is not a replacement for every other tool.
Check these three common problems
If you have eight eggs but no flute, return to the Egg Room and check the opened access and chest. If a head reacts but you stay put, inspect the opened mouth and enter it. If a melody produces no effect, check the selected tool, directional input, and whether the clue belongs to this room.
Keep the Remote separate from this route. It changes compatible switch states and interacts with the TV for a different secret; the TV is not the ordinary Animal Flute travel network. Do not search for a TV to make the eight-egg shortcut work.
When repeated attempts reveal no new interaction, leave the mark and try another branch. Returning with a more suitable tool or a better understanding of the puzzle is a valid part of progression. This page does not require finishing every nearby egg puzzle before you continue.
Questions and answers
Do telephones let me travel to other telephones?
They are save points. This guide’s travel route uses the Animal Flute and animal-head shortcuts.
Where does the Animal Flute come from?
Collect eight secret eggs, return to the Egg Room and collect it in the newly accessible area beside that room.
Do I need a long song to use a normal shortcut statue?
A note triggers the ordinary flute-statue shortcut interaction. Longer directional sequences belong to separate musical puzzles and may have location requirements.
