Whiskerwood taxes and winter: when to pause expansion
Balance taxes for cat overlords with mouse living needs. Distinguish eligible resources, Trust, winter heating, water and steam.
Scope: Whiskerwood PC Early Access edition
Checked scope: Mouse colony management, initial settlement, taxes, education, production and logistics. Requirements vary with settings and updates; this is not a complete table of all building costs, naval systems or research.

Prepare taxes through resource value
Check eligible items on the demand screen. A large stock of factory products may not be directly usable for payment.
Scroll horizontally to read wide tables.
| Item | What to check | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Bill | Next deadline and amount | Estimate required stock first |
| Eligible resources | Items and values on the payment screen | Compare payable value rather than total stock count |
| Living resources | Food, fuel and construction supplies for the near term | Leave enough to keep the settlement running after payment |
| Industrial/population taxes and others | Tax breakdown | Check whether expansion increased the burden |
| Trust | Trust after payment | Nonpayment reduces it: do not ignore shortages |

Payment mainly uses raw materials; processed goods cannot be freely submitted. Exceptions such as Gold Bullion exist, so use the current payment screen for the final decision.
Payment proportions and rewards
Reward tiers vary by payment relative to the demand. Aiming higher is not an end in itself.

| Proportion | Approach |
|---|---|
| 100% | Baseline for meeting the bill first |
| 125% | With spare resources, compare extra rewards against living stocks |
| 175% | Option for a large surplus |

Avoid exhausting living resources to overpay before harvest or winter. Check actual rewards and setting differences on screen.
Checks before winter
Check whether residents actually live somewhere warm, rather than merely owning heating buildings.
- Open the temperature view and find cold spots in homes/workplaces.
- Check uninterrupted fuel for Campfire, Bonfire and similar facilities.
- Consider temperatures at night or during shutdowns instead of relying only on factory heat.
- Pause new construction that would exhaust food and heating fuel.
- For steam heating, trace connections from Boiler water/fuel through to Radiator.
Do not confuse water with steam
Rain replenishment alone may not be reliable. Check intake, storage and consumers as one connected system.
Scroll horizontally to read wide tables.
| Chain | Check order from upstream |
|---|---|
| Water | Intake → pipes → tanks → water-using facilities |
| Steam | Boiler water/fuel → steam pipes → Steam Radiator |
| Direct heating | Fuel → operating heater → temperature coverage |

Decision table for expansion
These are management guidelines reducing failure, not mandatory in-game unlock conditions.
Scroll horizontally to read wide tables.
| State | Recommended next action |
|---|---|
| Food/fuel keep falling | Fix supply and logistics before growing population |
| Insufficient resources for next taxes | Secure eligible raw materials before adding processing |
| Research waiting for materials | Reduce competition between research and construction materials |
| Long journey to work | Review storage/housing routes before adding factories |
| Stable surplus and living conditions | Plan next education, research and settlement expansion |

Frequently asked questions
Do more processed goods make taxes easier?
Not necessarily. Ineligible processed goods do not fund payment and may increase industrial taxes. Check eligible items first.
Is factory heat enough for winter?
Some facilities cease providing heat when stopped. Prepare heating and fuel that support residents at night or during material shortages too.
