Picking up and putting down use separate clicks

With PC defaults, left-click to open a box, then click again to take an item. Move it to the destination and left-click to place it. Holding the button and dragging is not required.

1997: start by checking inside the furniture

This year has a single bedroom. Even if it feels cramped, visible desktop space is not the only place you can use.

  1. Hint 1: open storage beneath the window and the desk drawers
  2. Hint 2: distinguish objects displayed on walls from things stored flat
  3. Hint 3: consider whether the small lockable book belongs with ordinary books

1997 solution: items often left until last

The following is one workable arrangement. Desk and shelf decorations need not match it exactly.

  1. Put the locked diary in a desk drawer
  2. Put posters and wall pictures on walls, distinguishing them from framed standing photos
  3. Group stuffed toys on the bed and books on the bedside shelf
  4. Use the desk and drawers for stationery, and under-window storage for boxed toys
  5. Place the backpack in a free floor section, such as between the desk and storage, then check final red outlines

Splitting storage between the floor and cupboards helps you keep track of small items rather than piling every ball and large box onto the desk.

Distinguish items still boxed from unpacked items placed incorrectly

Empty boxes are cleared away. If you cannot finish, look for remaining boxes before searching for placement outlines to narrow the search.

  1. Zoom out to see the room and inspect all directions
  2. Use the floor plan to visit other rooms and check boxes individually
  3. Look for small boxes hidden behind large boxes or furniture
  4. After unpacking, open drawers and cupboards to inspect stored items for outlines too
  5. If still holding an item, place it and check for the completion star

You do not need to dismantle the entire arrangement. Fix outlined items individually to keep the checks manageable.

When there seems to be space but an item will not fit

The isometric view can make foreground floor and rear shelving overlap visually. If an item turns translucent, check that the intended surface has enough usable space.

  1. Zoom in on the shelf and point at the center of the intended surface
  2. Rotate long items to fit the shelf's depth
  3. Move one nearby object and retry to distinguish insufficient space from other problems
  4. Stack suitable items such as books or dishes to free room on floors, desks, and shelves
  5. Instead of repeatedly trying to move fixed furniture, look for opening parts or movable possessions

Making an item fit by rotating it does not prove the location is accepted. Check the final placement result too.

Places to check for missing small items

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

Places to check for missing small items: 4 entries
LocationWhat to inspectTip
Under desks or low tablesLower shelves and computer compartmentsLook beyond the tabletop
Top edge of the screenShelves near the ceiling and tall display unitsZoom out or move the view to reveal top shelves
Inside cupboards or washstandsSmall boxes, stationery, hair straighteners, medicine boxes, and similar objectsOpen doors and drawers one by one
Behind books, fabric, or large objectsSmall objects hidden by overlapMove the most recently placed large objects slightly, one at a time

The last item's location depends on your arrangement. Search surface by surface instead of relying on a single guide image.

Reduce visual and control difficulties in settings

Official options include UI scaling, screen zoom, changing the invalid-placement outline color, and disabling room-transition animation. Progression information is not conveyed through sound alone.

  1. Enlarge the view and UI if small drawers or achievement targets are hard to select
  2. If red outlines blend into the background, select another outline color under Accessibility
  3. Disable room-transition animation if the movement is uncomfortable
  4. Enable Allow items anywhere to skip placement correctness

Turning free placement off again restores the normal placement requirements.

If you miss an achievement, first return through the album

Choose a completed year's photo to revisit the arranged rooms. You can operate appliances or flush toilets from that state to pursue missed achievements.

  1. Check the achievement guide for a year containing its target
  2. Return to the album and select that year's photo
  3. Perform the action on the target object and verify the unlock in Steam too

Start Over and the album's trash icon are not required to search again for achievements. Distinguish revisiting from resetting if you want to preserve your arrangement.

If clicking stops working after a settings change

If this followed remapping the pickup button, consider the setting change before blaming the mouse. The developer's PC instructions include a launch option to reset controls.

  1. Exit the game and open Unpacking's Properties in your Steam library
  2. Enter resetcontrols in the General launch options and start the game
  3. Once controls work again, remove resetcontrols from launch options

This restores default bindings. It recovers control settings rather than solving red-outline placement puzzles. Record existing launch options first and do not remove unrelated options.

Frequently asked questions

Must I hold the mouse button while carrying things?

No. Left-click to pick up, then click again at the destination to put down.

Can a box contain items for another room?

Yes. For example, clothes unpacked in the 2004 bathroom go to the bedroom. Use the item's purpose and storage furniture rather than the box's location as your clues.

If everything is unpacked but I cannot finish, should I rearrange all furniture?

First check invalid-placement outlines and small objects inside storage. Under normal settings, look for placements that remove those outlines.
