Super Meat Boy Beginner Guide: Acceleration, Jumps, Walls and Recovery

Practise horizontal movement, running, jump holds and wall contact separately. Review overshoots and short jumps using starting and landing positions.

Edition: Normal main game of the original PC Steam app 40800 (Windows). Focuses on Meat Boy's standard controls and uses Steam collectible and character requirements. Forever, 3D, the Flash version, mods and console-specific requirements are treated separately.

Verification scope: Public sources compared on 2026-10-04. The game has not been launched; the current build number, frame counts and reproduction times have not been verified.

Check standard PC inputs and your character

Check standard PC inputs and your character: 6 entries
ActionInput or stateWhen to use itFailure example
Horizontal movement←/→Directional adjustment on the ground and in the airHolding direction in the air and overshooting the landing point
RunMove while holding ShiftMovement needing distance or speedKeeping it held even on small platforms
JumpSpaceLeave the ground or push off a wallThe preceding landing or wall contact has not registered
Adjust heightTap briefly or hold longerDistinguish low ceilings from high wallsHolding every jump and hitting hazards near the ceiling
Jump from a wallTouch the wall and press SpaceClimb between opposing walls or along the same wallPressing repeatedly before wall contact, so the input happens in midair
PauseEscReview the route or take a breakKeeping input held when restarting after death

Practice uses Meat Boy as the baseline. Shift, jumping, speed and airborne abilities differ on other characters, so do not compare them as though they handle identically.

Test starting position, input and landing in that order

Short jumpWide platform without hazardsCompare a brief Space press with a longer hold without directional inputObserve only the height difference without changing the landing point
Reach farther horizontallyBack of the platformStart running before jumping, then shorten directional input before landingDistinguish insufficient height from insufficient horizontal movement
Reach a wallBelow a flat wall you can slide onJump toward the wall, then jump again after contactWatch the push away from the wall, rather than repeatedly pressing in midair
Climb the same wallWall with few cornersAfter pushing away, steer back toward the wall and make contact againAttach higher than before on each repetition

This exercise order is an editorial example for separating inputs. It does not guarantee a specific height, distance or time.

Change only a hold/release input or the takeoff position to compare causes, rather than pressing repeatedly and waiting for accidental success.

Solution 01: Connect Inputs in Early Levels

Solution 01: Connect Inputs in Early Levels: 5 entries
Level landmarkStart and inputLanding or passage checkAdjustment after failure
1-2 Upward / vertical wallsTouch the right wall and repeat wall jumps. Compare returning to the same wall with moving to the opposite wallReach the upper platform and the goalIf you return to the wall too late, change only direction after jumping
1-3 The Gap / large central pitRun on the ground and jump from the edgeLand on the far side before approaching the goalStarting to run inside the pit does not test the run-up
1-5 Holy Mountain / a single wallMove toward the wall, push off, then return to the same wallGet on top and continue to the next wallIf you leave the wall too early, adjust the next directional input
1-9 Safety Third / crumbling wallsIdentify the next wall before contact, then move up before the wall crumblesReach the upper area while a return surface remainsDo not practise waiting at the same height
1-10 The Levee / two walls blocking a passageTouch the walls to remove them, then move sideways into the opened gapAvoid blades and repeat on the opposite sideDistinguish this from rushing into the wall before the gap opens

Restore the same conditions after restarting

  1. After dying in a normal level, confirm you are back at the start and release any held inputs once
  2. Retry with the same character and run-up position. Compare attempts with a different character separately
  3. For collectibles, confirm the result only after successfully reaching the goal. Touching one midway is not completion
  4. If another challenge format displays lives, distinguish it from unlimited normal-level retries

Separate attempts for advancing, improving grades and collecting items so the objective of each attempt is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hold the Run key all the time?

It helps with long movements, but releasing it can make small platforms and low ceilings easier to handle. Distinguish falling short from overshooting.

Can I climb using only the same wall?

Meat Boy can return to the same wall and repeat wall jumps. Check contact before jumping and directional input afterward, in that order.

My jump height changes every time

Keep hold duration, run-up, wall contact and character consistent. First compare a brief press and a longer hold on flat ground to isolate the cause.

I lost something I collected midway

Check whether you reached the goal in that attempt. Normal collection and special-section completion requirements are separated into collapsed tables in the collectibles guide.
