Roottrees Troubleshooting: Failed Searches, Portraits, and Cards That Will Not Lock In
An order for checking searches with no results, unavailable portraits, and entries that will not lock in. Covers hints and edition differences too.
Scope: The Roottrees are Dead, 2025 commercial edition (PC)
Checked scope: Covers family tree basics, matching the first 9 people, using searches and evidence, and starting Roottreemania. Does not include answers for every person, every achievement, or a complete solution to the additional case. Includes English UI labels.

Start with Where You Are Stuck
Before viewing new answers, distinguish between finding information and entering it.
Scroll horizontally to read wide tables.
| Symptom | Check First | Next Action |
|---|---|---|
| Search returns no results | Name spelling, word order, and punctuation | Check the original spelling in the text |
| Cannot find a magazine | Have you researched the publication? | Follow SpiderSearch to Periodicals |
| Cannot find a book in the library | Title and author | Check both together |
| Cannot select a portrait | Have you registered the face in the photograph? | Select the face in Evidence |
| Still unsure after reading a book | Unread pages | Read through to the last page |
| A card will not lock in | Portrait, occupation, and full name | Check the evidence one item at a time |
| Name is missing from the options | Search terms you have not investigated yet | Use hints too rather than immediately assuming a bug |
| The additional case is missing | Is this an edition in which you have completed the main case? | Check the commercial edition's new-game screen |

Stop Repeating the Same Searches
Keeping a search log makes it easier to spot actions that are producing nothing new.
- Focus on one thing you need, such as a portrait, occupation, or maiden name.
- Record searched terms separately from new terms found.
- Before repeating an unsuccessful search, look for uninvestigated proper nouns in the text.
- When you acquire new sources, check whether they actually add the information you need.
Use Duck to Decide Where to Revisit
Use hints to identify what to check before revealing every answer.
- If a hint points to a person, review that person's entries.
- When rereading sources, check descriptions of occupations, photographs, and relationships as well as names.
- Correct only the items you have identified as wrong, then check the entries again.
When an Older Guide Looks Different
Do not apply the 2023 browser edition's photographs and screens unchanged to the 2025 commercial edition.

| Difference | What to Check |
|---|---|
| How the photographs look | The relevant edition and portrait sources |
| Search and entry screens | Main case or Roottreemania |
| Additional investigation | Whether that content is included in the commercial edition |
| Japanese wording | Use the original spelling for in-game searches |

Frequently asked questions
Can incorrect entries cause an irreversible problem?
Revisit the evidence and check entries on cards that will not lock in. These instructions do not guarantee the fastest completion or every achievement, but do not assume that a mismatched candidate means you must start a new game.
Can I translate English search terms into Japanese before entering them?
Use the original spelling of in-game proper nouns. Understanding their meaning through a Japanese article and choosing the terms to enter in the game's search field are separate matters.
