Phasmophobia evidence guide: measurement conditions for all seven types, recording, and finishing
Reading Tier I EMF, Spirit Box, UV, orbs, writing, temperature, and D.O.T.S. Do not confuse unconfirmed with ruled out; proceed from final Journal selection to departure.
Edition: PC Steam app 739630, standard release, no mods. First example: standard Amateur settings, three evidence, Tier I starter equipment, keyboard/mouse. Solo and co-op for up to four; Voice/Text recognition addressed separately. VR, consoles, Custom, and weekly challenges are not treated as identical conditions.
Verification scope: Official standard v0.19.0.2, dated September 16, 2026, checked October 4, 2026. Incorporates v0.18.0.1 equipment bindings and v0.19.0.0 shared Journal displays. The event update scheduled for October 6 and planned 1.0 are not treated as already implemented. Equipment details use public-source checks, not exhaustive gameplay testing.

Separate phenomena, evidence, and final answer
Baseline: standard Amateur, three evidence. Noises and flickering suggest where to measure; check an evidence name only after the corresponding equipment satisfies its conditions.
- Check contract evidence count. Standard Amateur/Intermediate/Professional give three, Nightmare two, Insanity one; Custom is separately configured.
- Confirm your equipment Tier. Needles, LEDs, screens, and placement ranges differ even under the same item name.
- Record confirmed reactions on J's evidence page. The person who heard/saw it reports the room and observation.
- Do not immediately rule out a nonresponsive tool. Recheck room, distance, lighting, placement, and recognition settings.
Video/photo/audio Media records serve a different purpose from the seven evidence types used for identification. A rated recording does not add a new identification evidence type.
Read seven evidence types by their equipment's confirmation indicators
Check the table's accepted indicator before recording. For hard-to-read Tier I boundary values, do not rely on a vague instant.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Evidence | Required equipment/conditions | Accepted indication | Insufficient/exceptional cases | Recording action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMF Level 5 | EMF I ON, near a recently touched object | Needle swings clearly beyond 5 and responds in that region | Small readings, truck activity graph, or interference alone are insufficient | J → mark EMF Level 5 confirmed |
| Spirit Box | Box I ON, nearby in the same room, room lights OFF, alone condition | Response audio from Box and a white ghost LED response | Red LED, question recognition, noise, or nearby paranormal sound alone are insufficient | J → select Spirit Box |
| Ultraviolet | UV I ON, illuminate touched doors/windows/switches and similar surfaces | Handprints, fingerprints, or footprints revealed by UV | A salt depression alone is insufficient. Timing or position can cause misses. | J → select Ultraviolet |
| Ghost Orb | Video night vision ON; view room from different angles | Small bright particles drifting in the video | Do not confuse naked-eye particles, snow, or light. Special exceptions below. | Record observation. Revisit the supplement if candidates conflict. |
| Ghost Writing | Place book open with F in the active area | Writing/drawings on its pages | A closed, unplaced, or unresponsive book alone cannot rule it out | J → select Ghost Writing |
| Freezing Temperatures | Measure with a thermometer and wait for change | Below 1°C is the decision boundary. With Tier I, wait for a reading clearly below 0°C. | White breath alone is insufficient. Beware scale parallax, fluctuation, and brief measurements. | J → select Freezing Temperatures |
| D.O.T.S. Projector | D.O.T.S. I ON; aim its narrow beam across a path | A ghost shape passes through, outlined by green dots | Green light alone, teammates, and ordinary manifestations differ. Observation exceptions exist. | J → select D.O.T.S. |

Do not learn “white breath confirms Freezing” from the evidence name. Unchecking or ruling something out because it was not seen is different from leaving it unconfirmed.
Change measurement position even in the same room
If activity is lost, change one test condition at a time before replacing every tool. These beginner examples do not guarantee evidence within a set number of seconds.
- Aim EMF and UV where you heard an interaction. Do not stand at the room's center waiting for a distant door's response.
- Leave the thermometer in the candidate room or wait there, then reread it after preparing other tools. Distinguish this from the entire property cooling with the breaker OFF.
- Place the book open and check the D.O.T.S. projection direction. Place a camera with F so the book, D.O.T.S., and room space are visible, then check framing from the truck.
- Switch off that room's lights only when testing Spirit Box. For an alone condition, ask teammates to leave the room; move around recent activity while asking questions.
- Return safely to the truck and check camera NV. If nothing appears, check another angle or adjacent coverage, then review Sanity and the next trip's purpose.
Spirit Box requires that room's lights off. Flashlights and other portable lighting do not prevent responses. You can watch video from the truck, but that does not automatically satisfy on-site measurement conditions.
No reaction is not automatically a negative result
Failed conditions and evidence hidden by settings look similar. Check settings before retesting.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Uncertain symptom | Additional condition to check | Next measurement | Difficulty difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMF stays at 2–4 | Interaction location and timing | Read again near new activity | Under hidden-evidence settings, absence alone cannot rule out a ghost |
| Box flashes red | Lighting, distance, people in room, and recognition | Select a Text question and change position within the room | Whether alone/everyone is shown depends on settings |
| Book is blank | Is it open, and where is it placed? | Move it closer to current activity | A hidden evidence type naturally need not respond |
| Temperature is only slightly lower | Breaker and time spent there | Reread in the same place and compare rooms | Separate weather and initial power-setting effects |
| Cannot see D.O.T.S. | Projection direction, range, and observation method | Place a camera, leave the room, and watch the video | Specific observation exceptions are in the closed supplement |
| No candidates remain | Evidence checks and ruled-out marks | Return uncertain measurements to unconfirmed | Recheck evidence count and special exceptions |
| Video name label looks wrong | Language label or actual video content? | Recheck the equipment's actual footage | v0.19.0.1 has a known non-English video-label issue |

After narrowing candidates, select your own final answer
Even if checked evidence leaves one apparent candidate, separately confirm the answering ghost selection. The current teammate-choice display also helps detect misunderstandings.
- Open J somewhere safe and review confirmed, ruled-out, and unconfirmed evidence. Return mere nonappearances to unconfirmed.
- Choose the ghost name to answer. Its required evidence highlights when selected; compare that with what you observed.
- In co-op, read teammates' displays and briefly resolve differences by asking which equipment showed what. Each person makes a final choice.
- Return all survivors to the truck and finish with the keypad. Completing every optional objective or Media entry is not required to leave.
- Check correctness on the results screen. If wrong, choose one equipment condition to review next time.
Recording alone does not automatically identify the ghost. Even without certainty, returning is an option instead of increasing danger to seek a third evidence type.

Supplement 1: The Mimic's extra orbs and restoring candidates
The following reveals how to identify a specific ghost. The Mimic produces orbs in addition to its three normal evidence types, so selecting orbs as normal evidence removes it from the candidates.
- With three evidence, such as Amateur, consider testing Spirit Box, Ultraviolet, and Freezing Temperatures even after spotting orbs.
- If those three and orbs are confirmed, treat the orbs as an extra trait. Uncheck Ghost Orb in the Journal and review candidates.
- When considering The Mimic as the final answer, do not distinguish normal/extra orbs solely by particle appearance. Recheck other measurement conditions.
Extra orbs appear even with zero evidence. Its ordinary three evidence types are affected by evidence restrictions. This does not offer identification from a single speed change.

Supplement 2: observing Goryo D.O.T.S.
Goryo D.O.T.S. is observed through video. Waiting with someone in the room does not satisfy its observation conditions.
- Place a camera facing the D.O.T.S. coverage. Everyone leaves the room and watches footage from the truck or outside the room.
- Check for the D.O.T.S. shape on the camera screen. Do not confuse direct sight with video.
- D.O.T.S. is guaranteed for this ghost under one-/two-evidence settings, but a short nonappearance does not rule it out. Check orientation and the empty-room condition first.
With zero evidence, this D.O.T.S. identification method is unavailable. Do not identify it from one impression such as not changing rooms or an event occurring far away.
Frequently asked questions
Can I mark Freezing after seeing white breath?
White breath alone does not confirm it. Measure with a thermometer; with Tier I, waiting for a reading clearly below 0°C reduces errors from parallax and fluctuations.
Does a red Spirit Box light mean success?
Red does not confirm evidence. For Tier I, check response audio from the Box and a white response. Review room lighting, people present, distance, and recognition settings.
Can I rule out equipment after a while without reactions?
A short wait cannot rule it out. First check room, range, placement, power, and whether difficulty hides that evidence.
Must I record video or audio before answering the ghost type?
On ordinary contracts, each person answers by selecting a type in their Journal. Separate this from Media recording and optional objectives. Recording requirements specified in Training are different.
Candidates do not match despite apparently correct measurements
Check mistaken selections, ruled-out marks, evidence count, and equipment conditions first. Only if they still conflict, open this article's initially closed supplements for special observation conditions.
