Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (Game Boy)
Guards, giant centipede, mammoth and Delarin
Equipment and stones needed to win, required transformations/items, and scenes advanced by losing are separated by opponent.
Scope: Original Japanese Game Boy version (1992). Additional 3DS Virtual Console features are treated separately / Content checked: October 2, 2026
First palace visit: bridge guard
- Obtain the Bronze Sword, Life Stone east of Shiimizu and Power Stone right of the palace entrance. For the high platform, look up and hold A to jump.
- If Life is low, heal with Wine or another item before touching it. If you lose, first check whether you missed the stone right of the entrance.
- After winning, activate the switch beyond to extend the bridge. Leave the palace and head east.
Bavarois Mountain entrance: haunted tree
- Buy a Wooden Shield and Saw in A la Mode, then collect the Life and Speed Stones underground to the south.
- Equip the Saw as a human and touch the tree blocking the way. Do not challenge it while still using your ordinary sword.
- Heal Life before fighting. If you lose, check equipment and both underground areas instead of trying to level up by repeatedly defeating regular enemies.
Hot-spring entrance: losing to the snake
You do not need to defeat the venomous snake on arrival at Gerobeppu Hot Springs at this stage.
- Pass through the cave toward the hot-spring town. After losing the forced battle, listen to Mandora's explanation in town.
- Once snake transformation is available, stock up on the Leather Shield, Eggs and Fruit before entering the next hole.
Third palace visit: prison guard
- Open the entrance's left side with the Wristband and take the Silver Sword in the weapon storeroom. Collect the Life Stone along the route too.
- Return to human form and fight the guard. Do not assume a snake or frog can use the sword's strength.
- Take the Heart Key and rescue the residents. Revisit the man in the hole for the Power Stone before going to the next island.
Jungle: giant centipede
- Obtain the Power Stone in the island's northwest, Life Stone in the jungle and Iron Shield. Use the healing on the left at the last branch before taking the middle path.
- Return to human form and begin battle from the tip of its tail. If you touch the hard head or body, do not keep challenging it from the same spot.
- Return to Nantendo with the Wasabi and receive the Work Gloves from the doctor. Do not charge into the tail while Life is still low.
Eskimo Village: the soldier disguised as the shopkeeper
- Take the Speed Stone at the glacier and Life Stone in the forest where you search for Red Riding Hood. Find her, then return to the shop.
- Defeat the soldier disguised as the shopkeeper in human form with upgraded sword and shield. If you are still weak, check the underground items just before this section.
- Receive the Bairingaeru and return to the frog outside the gate on the northern cape.
Fuurin tavern: Heesuke
- Hear the miner at the gold mine, then ask about recruitment in town and advance the noticeboard and family conversations.
- Heal to maximum Life before speaking at the tavern. Do not keep choosing to buy drinks as the solution; go through the fight, then return to the noticeboard.
- Hire Heesuke in front of the noticeboard and take him to the gold mine. The Kazan All-Stars handle ordinary battles while accompanying you.
Eskimo Village: first mammoth battle and rematch
- After the gold mine, collect the Mirror Shield, Power Stone and Speed Stone in the Ice Cave. Return to the village for the first fight.
- Press B during battle to check the Mirror Shield reaction. This first fight progresses from defeat to the elder's conversation; do not try to win with your sword alone.
- Receive the Controller from the doctor and fight again. Pause with B and choose the Controller from Use item.
- Take the mammoth outside the village and have it carry the Gold Ingots at the lakeshore. Do not confuse the Mirror Shield's role with the Controller's.
Fourth palace visit: exit soldier after the prison escape
- Recover equipment while escaping with Madeleine. Avoid strong soldiers while your equipment is missing and continue collecting the chests.
- Pick up the Life Stone, check that your sword and shield are back and fight the exit soldier. Recover the Warp Door and leave the palace.
Final battle: Delarin and the barrier
- Collect the Life and Power Stones on the final visit and heal at the Ikeike Orb just before the fight. Enter the boss room with the Z Flute.
- Choices in the first conversation with the small snake do not create separate walkthrough routes. When it becomes a giant snake, pause battle with B rather than continuing to wear yourself down.
- Choose the Z Flute from Use item to advance the arrival event for the doctor, Richard and the others.
- Once the barrier opens a hole, charge with A. Wait for a timing when you can pass through; do not repeatedly hit the barrier wall and lose Life.
- Even if you fall at this stage, you can return to the boss room and resume. You can also see the hot-spring event after spring arrives.
- Required hit counts and internal damage formulas are omitted because independent verification is insufficient.
