What is Frostpunk?
Start here for A New Home in the original PC game. Check stopped facilities, coal shortages, research and objective deadlines, then open the relevant detailed guide.
Edition: Original Frostpunk PC Steam base game (app 323190), A New Home on standard Medium. Frostpunk 2, Frostpunk 1886, Endless, other scenarios and DLC-specific rules are outside scope.
Verification scope: Public sources checked on 2026-10-04, including official Patch 1.6.2 (2022-10-11) and Achievements & Localization Quality Hotfix (2025-10-20). Announced 2026 features for 1886 are excluded. In-game behavior and the distributed build number are untested.

Use A New Home in the original game as the baseline
Keep the central Generator running while managing workers, food, homes and healthcare. Building count alone is insufficient: consider who can work today and which facilities will operate before the next cold spell.

| What to check | This guide's baseline | If yours differs |
|---|---|---|
| Game | Original Frostpunk on PC Steam | Do not mix in Frostpunk 2's districts and council or announced 1886 mechanics. |
| Scenario | A New Home | Other scenarios and Endless have different starting facilities, objectives and laws. |
| Difficulty | Standard Medium | Gathering, research and illness vary; do not copy example schedules unchanged. |
| Controls | Pause to inspect in ordinary mode. | Survivor has different pause and save restrictions. |

English names accompany facilities whose Japanese translations vary. This guide compares public sources; it is not a record of in-game reproduction by the editorial team.
Choose a guide from the current symptom
Pause first and select one stopped facility. When problems overlap, inspect the immediate cause in this order: heating, healthcare and food, then sustained production.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Problem | Current state | First check | Guide to read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coal keeps decreasing. | Supply exists but falls below consumption. | Coal balance in Economy and nighttime consumption | Early-game guide: coal gathering and balance |
| A pile remains beside a Coal Thumper. | Production and collection are separate. | Pile-gathering staff and Gathering Post range | Early-game guide: resource and facility table |
| Raw Food exists, but meals are insufficient. | Cooking is stopped or cannot keep up. | Cookhouse staffing, temperature and working hours | Early-game guide: food and healthcare |
| More Medical Posts do not clear the sick queue. | Beds, engineers or suitable treatment are insufficient. | Patients, staff and minimum operating temperature | Early-game guide; laws and facilities guide |
| Research does not progress. | A Workshop is unstaffed or outside working hours. | Engineers, selected research and total research rate | Early-game guide: research prerequisites |
| A building reports no road connection. | It is not connected to the existing network. | Road tool and construction completion | Early-game guide: basic staffing controls |
| A signed law has no apparent effect. | Construction, staffing or ability activation remains. | Law effects and newly added objectives | Laws and facilities guide |
| Want to know the next objective | The next goal is unclear. | Objective name, unfinished requirements and time remaining | Main progression guide |
| A deadline differs from another guide. | Difficulty or progression start timing differs. | Current scenario, objective and forecast | Main progression guide: checks by situation |

Read four displays before adding buildings
Restoring one idle facility can be faster than constructing more empty buildings.
- Select the facility and read warnings such as no road connection, shutdown or exhausted resources.
- Distinguish assigned staff from actual efficiency. Illness or other absences can reduce output even at full nominal staffing.
- Open the temperature overlay from the top of the screen and inspect homes and workplaces separately.
- Compare production and consumption in Economy. If storage is full, check its assigned resource too.
The same people cannot research, treat patients and gather simultaneously. After transferring engineers, check that their former Medical Post or Workshop has not been emptied.
Do not judge warmth from distance alone
Outside temperature, building insulation and active heating determine warmth together. Steam Hubs can create heat zones away from the center.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Display | Meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Generator power level | Changes heat-zone warmth | Coal consumption and facility temperatures after raising it |
| Generator range | Changes central heat coverage | Buildings outside the zone and extra consumption |
| Steam Hub circle | Extends the same type of heat zone elsewhere | Overlap with existing zones and operating hours |
| Building Heater and insulation | Separate factors warming that facility | Research completion and whether its Heater is enabled |

Overlapping Generator and Hub zones, or multiple Hub zones, do not add their heat levels. Outside temperatures can rise too; reread the forecast rather than assuming an uninterrupted daily fall.
Manage laws and promises separately
Laws cannot be repealed, and some close the opposing branch. Before signing, check whether you can provide space, materials and staffing for the unlocked facility.
- Read prerequisites and mutually exclusive options in the Book of Laws. An unavailable entry is not necessarily blocked by research.
- Track the next-law cooldown separately from a new promise's remaining time.
- Read whether the objective requires construction alone, staffing or activating an ability too.
- Inspect Hope and Discontent breakdowns. If an ultimatum appears, use its threshold and deadline.
A finished law cooldown does not automatically fulfill a building promise. Hope and Discontent are not simple opposites; inspect both.
