Separate inspecting a move from committing it
These are example default keys. If remapped, check Menu → Settings → Controls. Start by hovering over a free space; commit the placement only after inspecting it.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Action | Example default PC input | Required state | Before committing or if it does not respond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Select a placement candidate | Move the mouse over a free space. | A candidate space borders an existing tile. | Do not click yet. Read the edges and quest changes first. |
| Rotate the tile | R / F, or mouse wheel over the candidate | The current tile appears in a candidate space. | Away from a candidate, the wheel zooms instead. Check the pointer position. |
| Place the tile | Left-click the candidate, or press Enter. | The orientation is legal. | Check every edge touching a river or railway. |
| Move the camera | W / A / S / D, or left-drag | While viewing the map | Distinguish a short click from dragging to avoid accidental placement. |
| Rotate the view | Q / E, or right-drag | While viewing the map | Do not confuse tile rotation with camera rotation. |
| Zoom out or in | C / X, or mouse wheel away from a candidate | While operating the camera | Zoom in for small terrain details and out to inspect flags. |
| View an offscreen quest | H | Classic quest display | Select an offscreen marker to move toward it. |
| Undo the last placement | Undo button | The immediately previous move is undoable. | Check the current key binding. Do not assume unlimited history rewind. |

A 2021 control reference lists number-key terrain highlights. This guide uses a newer PC control table and the official H guidance instead; it does not add the old number keys as current defaults.
Separate legal placement from scoring matches
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Neighboring edge | What to inspect on the candidate | Legality versus matching | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forest, houses or fields | Does the same terrain type face it? | Different ordinary terrain can sometimes be placed, but loses matching points and Perfect eligibility. | Try all six orientations and inspect other touching edges too. |
| Grassland | Does it face grassland, lake surface or a compatible water-station edge? | Even apparently empty grass has a matching-edge rule. | Do not judge only conspicuous houses and forests. |
| River or waterway exit | Can it connect to a river, lake surface or water station? | An orientation pointing a river exit into grassland is illegal. | Check other river exits, including the opposite side. |
| Railway exit | Does it connect to railway or a water station? | An ordinary grass or lake edge cannot block a railway exit. | Check bends, termini and other railway exits. |
| Lake surface | Does it connect to a river or form a shore against grassland? | Lake and grass edges can match, but grass does not count toward a water group. | Do not confuse a narrow river exit with broad lake surface. |
| Water station | Does it touch water, river, railway or grassland? | It can connect several restrictions, but does not necessarily match every surrounding forest, house or field edge. | Check legality and complete edge matching separately. |

These are representative placement examples, not a complete tile-shape distribution. Prioritize edge and connection highlights even when the colors change.
Check connections within each tile too
Connections inside a tile affect quest groups as well as connections between tiles. Do not automatically add disconnected forests, houses or fields together merely because their colors match.
- Hover over the quest bubble or terrain to inspect the highlighted group.
- Preview the current tile and see which existing groups it would join.
- Touching the same existing group on two edges does not count that group twice.
- If the count changes unexpectedly, check central connections inside the tile as well as its outer edges.
If internal connections are unclear, zoom in before rotating the map. No single connection diagram applies to every tile shape.
When highlights are difficult to see
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Symptom | Setting or state to inspect first | Action to try | What this reveals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot identify matching edges | Matching-edge highlight setting | Check visual aids in Settings, then return to the candidate. | Compare the response of each touching edge. |
| Quest bubbles explain little | Basic / Detailed tooltips | Switch to detailed tooltips and hover over the quest. | Read the quest type rather than guessing from its number alone. |
| Cannot find a distant flag | Quest highlights | Use H markers to navigate, then hover over the flag. | Inspect targets hidden near the map boundary too. |
| Snow or seasonal colors obscure terrain | Biome appearance | Recheck edges using an easier-to-read combination. | Separate terrain rules from visual preferences. |

Colors vary with version and settings; no particular color is the sole correct indicator.
Compare two candidate spaces before placing
The following original comparison assumes the current tile contains forest and grassland. It is not a fixed-seed walkthrough.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Candidate | Immediate result | Space left for later | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: match one forest edge on the perimeter | One matching edge; surrounding spaces remain open. | Other edges can be filled later. | Check quest progress if one is nearby. Replenishment is not guaranteed. |
| B: place between two existing tiles | Two matching edges; a Perfect also triggers if a neighbor completes six matches. | The newly placed tile still has empty edges. | Check the neighbor's less visible edges for a mismatch. |
| C: extend a forest quest but mismatch a field edge | Completing the quest can replenish tiles, but the mismatch remains. | The remaining hole requires more terrain types. | Is the supply urgent, or could another candidate achieve both goals? |

The order of A, B and C depends on the board. For any option, check legality → quest → points and replenishment → remaining openings.
Do not overconstrain the shapes needed later
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Unfinished space | Placement to avoid | Alternative to try | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| One railway exit is exposed. | Surround it immediately with other terrain, fixing even the required bend. | Look for railway extensions first, then fill ordinary surrounding terrain. | Preserve options for the track's direction. |
| A narrow hole bordered by forest, houses and fields | Require many terrain types from the last empty space. | Move a surrounding placement outward to avoid adding constraints. | Avoid waiting for one rare tile shape. |
| A region whose flag you want to complete | Keep adding matching terrain and more open edges. | Choose the enclosure boundary and develop new quests elsewhere. | Reduce the number of caps needed. |
| A large area of grass remains. | Assume it is worthless because it looks empty. | Look for grass matches, including lake shores. | Collect less conspicuous matches too. |

Public sources do not establish the exact probability or waiting time for the next tile. This guide does not invent drop rates to rank options.
Accidental placements and later resumption
- Immediately after a mistake, do not commit the next tile. Use Undo on that move.
- Check the restored tile, orientation, quest counts and supply before replacing it.
- When stopping, confirm the intended saved game in the menu. Do not confuse a new game with Resume.
- If Resume shows an empty map and no supply, first check the version and save. Version 1.2.3 includes a fix related to resuming from an empty map.
Undo is not universally guaranteed for mistakes several moves earlier, after a run ends or across a restart. Save deletion or external editing is not recommended as a solution.
Frequently asked questions
The wheel moves the map instead of rotating a tile
Check that the pointer is over a placement candidate. In the example PC defaults, the wheel rotates a tile there and zooms elsewhere. Try R / F too.
All three edges match, but there is no Perfect
All six directions, including formerly empty edges, must be filled with matches. Three matching touching edges are not yet a complete tile.
Connecting a lake to grass does not increase the water quest
Edge matching and connected water groups are different. Lake and grass edges can match, but grass is not counted as a water tile. Check that rivers and lakes join the same water group.
Can I freely delete unwanted tiles in Classic?
Creative's deletion and generation tools are not Classic controls. Check Undo for the last move; for older placements, work from the remaining open edges.
