「A detective RPG with a holstered gun: combat unfolds through dialogue」 — Based on the official Steam store description and review record

🔑 Key points

1. No conventional combat: everything progresses through dialogue and checks

Even shootouts unfold through dialogue and skill checks. Action-game reflexes are not required; choosing which skills to bring to a situation is at the heart of play.

2. 24 skills across four attributes

Intellect, Psyche, Physique, and Motorics each contain six skills. Your investments determine the detective you become and the dialogue choices available to you.

3. Skills speak to you

High skills interrupt conversations with advice. Skills that are too high can also feed you assumptions or reckless impulses: higher does not always mean correct.

4. White checks and red checks

Skill checks include retryable white checks and one-time red checks. White checks can be retried after raising the skill later, leaving a path forward after failure.

5. Failure becomes part of the story

Failing a check does not necessarily mean game over: failure has its own written outcomes. Many of the game's memorable scenes emerge from failure.

FAQ

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut FAQ

Q1 What kind of game is Disco Elysium? ▼
A

An RPG without conventional combat, following an amnesiac detective investigating a murder. Everything unfolds through dialogue and skill checks, with 24 skills interrupting conversations to offer advice or feed you assumptions. Its immense text and ability to turn failure into story have earned it a place among the most highly regarded RPGs. Developed and published by ZA/UM, it was released on October 15, 2019; The Final Cut is the definitive edition with all dialogue fully voiced. Japanese is supported.

Q2 How should I choose a build? ▼
A

Choosing a starting preset is fine. There is no single correct build, and the main story is designed to be completable with any skill setup. High skills open dialogue options; low skills reveal a different perspective. See [How Skills and Checks Work](/en/games/disco-elysium/skills/) for the details.

Q3 Should I reload after failing a check? ▼
A

Generally, we recommend continuing. The game has fully written outcomes for failure, and many memorable scenes emerge from it. White checks can also be retried later after improving the relevant skill.

Q4 Does the lack of conventional combat mean there is no tension? ▼
A

Quite the opposite. One-time red checks and the weight of your choices create constant tension. Even deciding whether to draw a gun happens within dialogue, and the consequences cannot be undone.

Q5 How much text is there? ▼
A

An enormous amount. Reading is central to playing, so be ready to settle in with the text. The Japanese translation is highly regarded.
