Darkest Dungeon Stress Guide | The 100 and 200 Thresholds and When to Retreat
Covers Resolve checks at 100 stress, heart attacks at 200, torchlight, handling back-row enemies, a sample formation with healers, retreating from expeditions and treatment after returning.
Scope: Normal expeditions in the original PC game. Numeric tables assume Darkest difficulty without Cartographer's Camp. Excludes the heroes added in The Fire's Edge, Crimson Court, the Farmstead and PvP modes.
Rules checked: October 4, 2026
Stress remains after returning to town. Alongside a party that can restore HP, bring ways to stop stress attacks from the back ranks. Decide whether an expedition is worth continuing before stress reaches 100.

What Happens at 100 and 200 Stress
Stress recovery and HP healing are separate. Even at full HP, allowing stress to build up can break your party.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| State | Normal Outcome | Next Action |
|---|---|---|
| Below 100 | No Resolve check yet | Stop enemy stress attacks and use camping or recovery skills if needed |
| Reaching 100 | A check for an Affliction or Virtue | Do not plan an expedition around the chance of a Virtue. Consider retreating if refusals or other behavior prevent heroes from fulfilling their roles |
| 200 while Afflicted | A heart attack sends the hero to Death's Door. If already at Death's Door, they die | Having HP left does not mean you are safe. Decide whether to leave before reaching the threshold |
| 200 while Virtuous | The Virtue is lost and stress returns to 0 | This differs from a normal heart attack, but it does not provide permanent safety |
| Returning to the Hamlet | Remaining stress carries into the next expedition | Separate heroes who need recovery from those joining the next expedition |

Check heroes with special rules, such as the Flagellant, separately. This guide covers checks for ordinary heroes.
Torchlight and Increased Stress
High light also helps scouting and surprising enemies. Try extinguishing the torch for profit after you can handle normal expeditions reliably.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Light Level | Stress Modifier on Darkest | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 76~100 | No additional modifier | Keep the light in this range on your first expeditions |
| 51~75 | Stress received +10% | Use a torch before leaving back-row stress dealers active |
| 26~50 | Stress received +20% | Refill before combat. Compare remaining torches with the distance still unexplored |
| 1~25 | Stress received +30% | Consider stronger enemies as well as increased rewards when deciding whether to continue |
| 0 | Stress received +40% | A normal corridor encounter may also be replaced by a Shambler fight |

Effects differ on Radiant, Stygian/Bloodmoon and with District modifiers. Do not apply this table to lighting in the Courtyard or Farmstead.
A Sample Formation to Stop the Back Ranks
Treat the front position as rank 1 and the rear as rank 4. Check not only which heroes you bring, but whether their equipped skills work from those positions.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Position | Example Role | Check Before Departure |
|---|---|---|
| rank 4:Vestal | Single-target and party HP healing | Equip healing skills usable from the back ranks. Treat this as a separate role from stress healing |
| rank 3:Jester | Inspiring Tune and Battle Ballad | Keep the hero in a position where Inspiring Tune works. Repeatedly using skills that move forward can prevent healing |
| rank 2:Highwayman | Attack the back ranks with Pistol Shot | Do not equip only skills that target the front ranks |
| rank 1:Crusader | Handle the front ranks and support with Inspiring Cry | Handle front-row enemies and emergency healing for allies. Bring other heroes who can damage the back ranks |

This is a sample formation for normal expeditions, not a fixed team for every area or boss. Against enemies immune to bleed or with high PROT, change your damage types and target ranks.
The Order for Keeping Stress Down in Combat
Trying to heal indefinitely with one enemy left can be disrupted by reinforcements. Separate the stage of reducing enemy numbers from the stage of recovery.
- Locate stress dealers such as Cultist Acolytes and Swine Wretches. Prioritize attacks or stuns that reach the back ranks.
- Before focusing everyone on high-HP front-row enemies, check whether you can reduce the back row's actions. Prevent stress from building while you wear down the front ranks.
- While dangerous enemies remain, keep attacking or stunning rather than only healing. Use Inspiring Tune alongside opportunities to reduce incoming stress.
- Once fewer enemies remain, restore HP and reduce stress. Prolonging combat risks reinforcements, though, so do not aim for full recovery in every fight.
- After a fight, check light, food, injuries and stress before the next room. Decide whether retreat is possible before moving on.
When to Continue, Camp or Retreat
You can bring back some loot even if you retreat. Evaluate your chances of completing the objective before losing trained heroes and your investment in their equipment.
Wide tables scroll horizontally.
| Situation | Priority Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The objective is complete and recovery resources are low | End additional exploration and return | Losing a hero over the next chest is too costly |
| A medium or long expedition with recovery options remaining | Consider camping in a safe location | Combine a meal, stress recovery and protection from a nighttime ambush |
| Several heroes are Afflicted and the healer refuses orders | Consider escaping combat and abandoning the expedition | HP healing is no longer reliable, leaving too few actions to recover |
| Death's Door combined with high stress | Avoid continuing and look for a chance to escape | A heart attack at 200 and damage over time can be fatal |
| Torches and food are exhausted, with the objective far away | Weigh the rewards against losing heroes and retreat | Entering new rooms with high stress becomes more dangerous |
No rows in this table match. Shorten the search or clear it to restore every row.
Escaping combat is not guaranteed, and retreating also adds stress. It does not restore the party to a safe, fully recovered state.
Treatment After Returning and the Next Expedition
Build a rotation that includes heroes taking time to rest, instead of sending the same four out every week.
- Check returning heroes for stress, Afflictions, diseases and Quirks that restrict their behavior.
- Send highly stressed heroes to the Tavern or Abbey. They cannot join an expedition during the week they use a facility, so plan the next party in advance.
- Before spending money, also check weapon, armor and skill upgrades for the next expedition's heroes. Gaining Resolve Levels does not automatically upgrade equipment.
- If mild stress can be handled by passive recovery while idle, consider skipping a week of deployment. Do not spend all your money putting everyone into facilities.
FAQ
Does 100 stress always mean losing control?
A check for an Affliction or Virtue occurs. An Affliction can cause refusals and other behavior, but it does not make every action fail.
Is 75 torchlight in the highest light range?
The high-light range in this table starts at 76. Dropping to 75 enters the next range, so check the value before combat.
Does healing HP prevent a heart attack?
Heart attacks are caused by reaching 200 stress. HP healing alone cannot prevent them, and a heart attack at Death's Door causes death.
