ABOUT

What is Darkest Dungeon?

A gothic horror RPG in which you send flawed adventurers into dungeons to reclaim your cursed ancestral estate. Its defining feature is stress management, separate from HP: darkness, ambushes and the deaths of companions erode your heroes' minds, and those pushed beyond their limits can break down and tear the party apart. Adventurers are treated almost as expendable resources as you rest, rotate and sometimes abandon them while rebuilding the estate. Its unforgiving world and weighty narration have earned an enthusiastic following. The source's August 2026 Steam snapshot records over 161,000 reviews and a Very Positive rating. Japanese is supported.

🔑 Key Points

1. Stress is a second lifeline alongside HP

Stress ranges from 0 to 200. Reaching 100 triggers a Resolve check, usually resulting in an Affliction that hinders the whole party, or occasionally a Virtue that rallies the hero. Reaching 200 causes a heart attack.

2. Torchlight determines risk and reward

Bright light is safer and reduces stress buildup. Darkness strengthens enemies but increases rewards. Beginners should start by maintaining high light.

3. Rotate your adventurers

Stressed adventurers need rest at the Tavern or Abbey. Developing and rotating several parties, instead of relying on one elite team, is fundamental to the game.

4. Retreat is a standard tactic, with no shame attached

You can abandon a quest and retreat if the situation turns against you. Since you can bring back some of what you collected, it is an intended option that is far better than a party wipe.

5. 0 HP means Death's Door, not instant death

At 0 HP, a hero enters Death's Door and may die from the next hit. Healing can keep them alive, but dead adventurers never return.

FAQ

Darkest Dungeon FAQ

Q1 What kind of game is Darkest Dungeon? ▼
A

It is a gothic horror RPG in which you send flawed adventurers into dungeons. Stress is tracked separately from HP, and heroes broken by fear can bring down the whole party. Managing rest, replacements and occasional losses as you rebuild the estate is central to the game. Developed and published by Red Hook Studios and released on January 19, 2016. Japanese is supported.

Q2 How does stress work? ▼
A

Stress ranges from 0 to 200, with thresholds at 100 and 200. At 100, a Resolve check occurs, usually resulting in an Affliction that hinders the party. At 200, a heart attack occurs. See [Stress and Torchlight Explained](/en/games/darkest-dungeon/stress/) for detailed responses.

Q3 My party keeps getting wiped out ▼
A

You may be waiting too long to retreat. Retreating is a standard tactic rather than simply accepting a penalized defeat. If the situation turns against you, abandon the quest and return with your adventurers and some of the loot. A party wipe is the real loss.

Q4 I want to use only my favorite party ▼
A

That does not fit the game's design. Stressed adventurers need rest, and you are expected to use another party while they recover. Relying on one elite team leaves you unable to recover when that team breaks down.

Q5 What games are similar? ▼
A

Among games covered on this site, Slay the Spire, with its build planning and willingness to cut losses, Stoneshard, with injury management, and Kenshi, with its emphasis on managing defeat, share a similar spirit.
