💡 Wartales Beginner Tips
Tips for the medieval open-world tactical RPG Wartales, grouped into early troop development, turn-based combat, professions and regional progression.
Build food supplies and finances in the starting region, Tiltren
Tiltren is the lowest-level starting region in Region-locked mode. Complete contracts for money and hire toward a troop of five or six only if upkeep permits. Aim to retain at least three times the listed daily food consumption. Food shortages undermine troop condition.
Equip everyone before moving to another region
Enemies can become much stronger in the next Region-locked area. Moving onward before everyone has suitable armor, weapons and shields risks heavy losses. Use local fights or contracts to improve levels and equipment before travelling when needed. Defeating every bandit is not a requirement for moving to the next region.
Prioritize learning and developing Cook
Cook is a non-combat profession that prepares food for the troop. Food consumption rises with party size, so assign a cook early to improve food efficiency. Check the actual meal’s listed buffs rather than assuming every meal improves accuracy or damage.
Hold enemies through engagement
Adjacent combatants who engage cannot simply separate; attempting to disengage exposes them to an attack. Use front-line characters to pin dangerous enemies and block their route to the back line.
Use front-line tanks to protect ranged attackers
Place Warriors or Brutes on enemy approaches and keep Archers or Crossbowmen in safe positions. The front line holds while ranged allies finish enemies.
Allocate Valour Points before committing
Many powerful skills use Valour Points shared by the troop. Spending them casually on weak enemies can leave you short for harder fights. Set a rough budget appropriate to each battle.
Blacksmith supports the crafting economy
Learn the profession by working at a forge or anvil. It crafts equipment, with higher ranks broadening the available selection. Strength-based front-line characters also benefit from the passive bonuses.
Use Miner, Woodcutter and Angler to secure materials and food
Learn these gathering professions at ore veins, logging points and fishing spots. They supply crafting materials and food; pairing fishing with Cook makes food management much easier.
Use prisoners as a source of income
Capture weakened human enemies with Chains. Prisoners can provide ransom or sale income and may sometimes join after travelling with the troop. Consider capture before killing every enemy.
Build Renown through local contracts before moving on
Completing contracts builds Renown and expands available work and activities. Gaining reputation and money in the current region before advancing is a useful long-term approach.
Does Wartales support Japanese?
**Steam does not list Japanese support for Wartales.** Multiple interface and text languages are supported, including English. Use the companion, region, profession and combat guides alongside the language you play in.
What party composition should beginners start with?
A balanced party such as **two front-line fighters (for example, a Warrior and Swordsman), one ranged attacker (Archer), and one flexible slot (Spearman or Ranger)** is approachable. The front line engages enemies while the back line deals damage. More companions increase food and wage costs, so stabilize a small troop’s finances before expanding.
How do I manage troop morale and happiness?
Maintain happiness through meal quality, rest and paying wages. **Cook** meals and the **Bard’s** lute performances are standard management tools. Falling happiness can cause companions to leave, so monitor both food and cash flow.
What should I keep in mind for co-op?
Co-op supports up to four players. Assign clear responsibilities for the front line, back line, indirect tactics and non-combat professions. A brief discussion of formation and turn order before battle helps prevent accidents.
What takes priority when managing camp?
A practical order is (1) **food supplies**, consumed at each rest; (2) **paying wages**, since running out of money risks departures; (3) **recovering fatigue**, which reduces performance; and (4) **maintaining happiness** through meals, performances and treatment. Food or cash shortfalls can be hard to recover from, so aim for a surplus.
How do I upgrade equipment?
A companion with the **Blacksmith** profession can craft weapons and armor at an anvil. Gather materials from ore veins with a Miner, logging points with a Woodcutter, and loot. Higher profession ranks broaden the equipment available, so appoint and train a crafting specialist early.
What is Renown?
Renown represents the troop’s reputation and rises through completing contracts and other activities. **Higher Renown expands the contracts and features available**, broadening what the troop can do. Early on, complete contracts consistently to build money and reputation together.
Which difficulty should I choose?
Wartales lets you select **combat difficulty** and **exploration mode** separately. Region-locked fixes enemy levels by region, while Adaptive scales them to your troop. For a first run, a modest combat difficulty and Adaptive exploration let you focus on learning with fewer level-gap obstacles.
What updates and DLC are on the 2026 roadmap?
The 2026 roadmap lists (1) the paid Contract DLC Fires in the Capital, released in late April 2026 and set around restoring order in the troubled capital of Edoran; (2) a free community-request update in Q3 2026 with new battle maps, armor colors and quality-of-life improvements; and (3) the annual expansion in Q4 2026 with mounted units, a new region and new champions. Check the latest official announcements for the release status of each roadmap item.
