🛡️ Wartales Combat Guide — 12 Techniques for More Reliable Battles

Twelve techniques across four categories: positioning, skills, status effects and formation. Covers the fundamentals to learn first and more advanced tactical applications.

📅 Updated: 2026/05/20 🛡️ 12 combat techniques 👥 Co-op supported
🎯 Positioning

Pin enemies down through engagement

When adjacent combatants engage, neither can simply walk away. A front-line fighter pinning down a dangerous enemy and blocking its route to the back line is a fundamental Wartales tactic.

Disengaging invites an opportunity attack

Trying to move out of engagement exposes the character to an attack. Check the turn order before deciding which ally should engage which enemy, and who should avoid engagement.

Reposition ranged classes before they are engaged

Archers and Crossbowmen cannot perform at their best when engaged. Watch enemy movement ranges and keep them at a position with a turn’s worth of breathing room.

🎯 Using skills

Decide when to spend Valour Points

Many strong skills consume Valour Points shared by the troop. Set a rough spending allowance for each fight so you neither waste the pool on weak enemies nor conserve it so aggressively that damage suffers.

Define roles with level 2–3 specializations

Classes choose specializations at levels 2–3, which can substantially change their roles. Choose options that fill gaps in the troop: pinning enemies, area damage or single-target damage.

Reload repeatedly before firing with the Crossbowman

Crossbows have Loaded and Empty states, and passives can permit several reloads in the same turn. Pair those reloads with attacks whose damage scales with the reload count.

🎯 Status effects and indirect tactics

Poison and bleeding reward longer fights

Damage over time, including Ranger poison, contributes more against durable enemies and in prolonged fights. Apply it early to make the later stages easier.

Prepare weapons with oils before combat

Alchemists make consumable oils to apply to weapons. When a difficult fight is predictable, this preparation can make a substantial difference to consistency.

Capture weakened enemies with Chains

Weakened human enemies can be captured with Chains. Prisoners can provide ransom or sale income, and some may eventually join the troop after travelling with it. Consider their value before killing every enemy.

🎯 Formation and troop management

Set up a flanking formation during deployment

Before combat begins, separate the characters holding the front from those moving around the sides and rear. Rangers benefit from starting in positions that make back attacks easier.

Balance party size against upkeep

Each additional companion increases food and wage costs. A small, capable troop is a practical early choice; expand after finances become stable.

Rest to clear fatigue and maintain happiness

Fatigued companions cannot perform at full strength. Regular camp rest, meals and Bard performances help manage fatigue and happiness on long journeys.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What should I learn first in combat?

Learn **how engagement works**. Adjacent enemies and allies who engage cannot simply move away; forced disengagement exposes them to an attack. Have the front line pin down dangerous enemies and block their route to the back line. Reproducing this formation consistently makes fights more reliable.

How should I manage Valour Points?

Valour Points are a **resource shared by the troop**, used for powerful skills. Spending them casually on weak enemies leaves you short in tougher fights, but excessive saving can reduce damage. Set a rough spending limit appropriate to each fight’s size.

How should I use status effects?

**Damage over time, such as poison, helps against durable enemies and in long fights.** Combine Ranger poison with oils made by an Alchemist and applied to weapons before combat to improve damage against heavily armored enemies. Apply the effects early.

How should we divide roles in co-op?

In co-op for up to four players, **give each player a clear responsibility**. A useful division covers front-line fighters (Warrior, Brute or Swordsman), ranged attackers (Archer or Crossbowman), mobile fighters (Ranger or Spearman), and non-combat professions such as cooking and smithing. Discuss formation and turn order before battle to reduce accidents.
