Permafrost Rescue the dog after Horizon and complete your first base

You have reached Horizon and can use stone tools and a bow. Reserve one bandage and one raw meat for the dog.

After entering Horizon, first enter the two-story lodging with the yellow accommodation marker and press F at the upstairs Sleeping Bag to claim it. The respawn-setting message confirms you have a return point if an expedition fails. Next, visit the leader's cabin with the green-hand flag and speak to Robyn.

For Horizon's Kitchen, cook one Meat. Open the stove with F in the building with a pot sign, place Meat in PRIMARY and Wood in FUEL. Ignite with X, cook with R, collect the Dish, then return to Robyn and choose “Dinner is ready.” After accepting Dog Days, finish dog-rescue preparations before detouring into Separated, the separate task of finding Liam.

Bring one bandage and one raw Meat. A Makeshift Bandage uses two Cloth in Tab crafting; no Workbench is needed. Keep your own healing separately too. If you have no meat, hunt rabbits or deer with the bow: on PC, right-click to aim and left-click to fire. Equip a Stone Shiv, hold F at the carcass to skin it, then press F to open its storage and take Meat. Cooking everything leaves no raw meat for the dog, so reserve one uncooked piece.

Before leaving, press F at the square's wooden post and sled to unlock Horizon's travel point too. Even if it is the only destination now, it provides a return route once you unlock Church later. You are ready when Dog Days is accepted and the bandage and raw meat are in your own inventory.

Leave through Horizon's large wooden gate. Pass the two fuel barrels and broken snowmobile near it, then follow the fence below the cliff toward the frozen riverbed. From the abandoned white vehicle, continue to the shallow ditch crossed by a concrete slab. A wooden post with a faded red flag marks the cave entrance. This route comes from an October 12 guide and helps avoid entering a different opening based only on the snowy scenery.

At the entrance, check the BONE CAVE location name and the objective update to go farther inside. Identify the dog's room by the flare on the ground, fallen survivor, and dog carrying yellow baggage. If dark, hold Q for the radial menu and use Flashlight. Defeating the bear in the cave is not itself a recruitment requirement.

Approach the dog and use the F treatment interaction to apply the bandage. Wait for the animation and objective update, then interact again to give raw meat. Dropping food at its feet does not advance the task. Check that Dog Days completes, New Home asks you to leave the cave, and the dog follows.

A PC guide explains that after recruitment, tapping F near the dog opens storage, while holding F opens the command wheel. Start by transferring a small amount such as wood and checking that you can retrieve it. Correct the command if you mix up Follow and Stay. Moving into open space and trying Stay → Follow is reported to help if it stops in a passage, but is not a guaranteed pathfinding fix. For co-op ownership, follow the host cautions in the separate article, and do not initially put the rescue bandage and meat into dog storage.

After rescuing the dog, take Bone Cave's opposite exit into Woods. An October 10 guide suggests the clearing below the exit, along the fenced road, for a first base. Gather Wood from nearby plank piles and trees and choose flat ground with a green preview outside Horizon's no-building area. There is a known issue where a large house built before New Home starts does not count, so begin construction at this stage.

Place two foundations side by side, enclosing the six outer edges with five walls and one Doorway. Insert a Door into the Doorway and cover the top with two Floor/Roof pieces. The published recipes total 36 Wood: foundations 5 Wood × 2, walls 3 × 5, Doorway 3, roof 3 × 2, Door 2. Finish this required structure before expanding to a larger building.

Place a Bed on the floor from Survival. The material example is Cloth 5 + Wood 5. After building, press F at it to claim it and confirm “RESPAWN POINT SET.” Placing and claiming are separate steps. Next, place a Small Wooden Chest from Containers (Wood 2) and a Workbench from Utilities (Wood 10) indoors.

A Workbench may not open just because it is on a floor. For “ROOF NEEDED TO INTERACT,” cover directly above it with a roof. Aim roof snapping at the top edge of a wall, not the ground or halfway up. “STRUCTURE IS TOO EXPOSED!” is a separate warning: the published example opens it with F after repositioning beneath the roof behind the bench. This does not guarantee one wall is sufficient in every situation. For this hut, enclose the perimeter and count success when F opens the WORKBENCH screen from beneath the roof.

Mine Flint in Bone Cave with the Stone Pickaxe, then craft one each of Flint Pickaxe (Flint 2 + Wood 4), Flint Axe (same), and Flint Shiv (Flint 1 + Wood 2) at the Workbench. All three total Flint 5 + Wood 10. Collect them and equip the Flint Pickaxe for copper mining. Do not keep striking copper with the stone pickaxe.
