Halls of Torment — Rescue the Wellkeeper and keep retrieved equipment

To keep ordinary equipment for future runs, rescue the Wellkeeper, send a new item through a well, then purchase it from him at camp. These are separate steps. Finding an item during a run, or sending it up without buying it afterward, does not finish the permanent-unlock process.

Reach the cage and bring back the key

In Haunted Caverns, defeat its Imp Chieftain boss; Ember Grounds is then available. This is a boss-unlock requirement, not a character-level requirement. You do not have to wait for a rule such as “reach level 30.” Select Ember Grounds before starting the rescue run.

  1. Follow the directional marker for the imprisoned Wellkeeper until you reach his cage.
  2. Speak to him. His request reveals another marker for the Cage Key.
  3. Follow the key marker and collect the key. Keep gaining experience on the way so the rescue detour does not leave you underpowered.
  4. Return to the cage and free him. Picking up the key without returning is not enough.
  5. On returning to camp, find him beside the equipment stash. Check the stash before planning your next run.

Send an item, buy it, then equip it

During a later run, choose equipment you have not permanently recovered. The retrieval interface distinguishes new items; the modern player guide describes a grey star on an unretrieved item. At the well, put your chosen item into the Bucket Slot and activate Send Item Up.

Back at camp, open the Wellkeeper's shop and pay for the item you sent. It then becomes available from the stash for future starting loadouts. For a first retrieval, prioritize something your next planned character can use; this is a practical selection rule, not a universal best-item ranking. Check that you selected the intended item before confirming the send.

If the item seems missing, check where the process stopped: was it merely equipped during the run, actually sent through the well, or purchased at camp? Also check its rarity before treating it as an ordinary-well problem.

Limits and later progression

Open solution / late-game details

The baseline well provides one equipment send. Extra buckets can add retrieval opportunities in Agony; the 1.0 notes allow up to two additional buckets. Do not apply a blanket “one item in every mode” rule. Potion bottles have their own handling and are outside this equipment checklist.

Uncommon equipment uses a later system. The 1.0 postgame involves beating The Vault and the Archaeologist's Threads shrine mechanism. A September 25, 2024 official fix explicitly removed the ability to recover uncommon equipment through the ordinary well.

The Wellkeeper also leaves camp during intended progression; this is not automatically a failed rescue or a reason to reset a save. The official 1.0 notes connect The Vault unlock to buying 30 items. This guide covers PC progression and does not assume the same interface or economy in mobile editions.

Questions and answers

Why is a sent item missing from my next loadout?

Sending ordinary equipment up is one step. Return to the Wellkeeper at camp and buy the item before choosing it from the stash. Check rarity if this is an uncommon item.
