💡 Halls of Torment Tips and Beginner Guide
Eleven tips for early PC base-game progression: characters, movement, abilities, equipment retrieval and blessing investment. Locked equipment is not mandatory, and current values and requirements should be confirmed in the game.
Learn attack direction with Swordsman
The starting character is Swordsman. Check which direction lets the forward main weapon connect, then move toward open ground before becoming surrounded. The old draft’s Swordswoman name and inherent Whirlwind are not assumed.
Consider Movement Speed if movement is the problem
After unlocking the Shrine of Blessings, identify why you cannot reach an escape route and invest accordingly. These are permanent upgrades purchased with Gold, rather than cards that must be selected anew every run.
Separate progression that persists into later runs
Run levels and traits do not carry directly into the next attempt. After returning, check quest rewards, blessing investments and equipment that you retrieved and purchased.
Keep an escape route around the crowd
Move across open ground to draw enemies together, then check crowds and projectiles before returning for experience. Movement does not guarantee safety; avoid forcing a path through a narrow gap.
Check the route before collecting recovery
When health falls, check the location of recovery pickups and an escape route. Do not assume an unchecked despawn timer or run straight into a dense crowd just to heal.
Keep track of bosses and projectile sources
Watch distant shooters as well as nearby enemies, and move where both can be avoided. Record boss timing separately from the kills that unlock regions; progression is not automatic at a character-level band.
Develop a main ability before adding more
More abilities add more traits to the level-up pool. Choose an ability to cover a weak area of the main weapon, then check its current rank and next upgrade requirements before adding another.
Read ability tags and upgrade targets
Ring Blades, Phantom Needles and Transfixion have different attack patterns. Read what direct Damage, attack speed and effect upgrades apply to rather than grouping them together. A CP or mana-spending system is not inferred.
Distinguish finding, retrieving and buying
After rescuing the Wellkeeper, confirm an item at the well, buy it at camp and use the Item Stash. Equipping a found item during the run alone does not make it available next time. Do not assume every item belongs to a set bonus.
Adjust blessings to the reason a run fails
Invest Gold after identifying a shortage in movement, damage or health. Investments can be refunded, so use the current menu’s costs and effects rather than unchecked fixed values or one universal ranking.
Choose the next objective on the Quest Board
Regular Halls aim for 30-minute survival. The old draft’s Gold Cherry rating at 25 minutes is not a verified system here. Choose an unlock that helps later attempts, such as the Wellkeeper, an ability or a character.
Does Halls of Torment support Japanese?
The PC Steam language table lists Japanese interface text and subtitles. This is separate from spoken audio. The old draft’s claim that Japanese was unsupported has been corrected.
Which character is a useful starting point?
Start with Swordsman to learn attack direction and movement. Surviving Haunted Caverns until 26:00 remains unlocks Archer for a ranged approach. This is not a strength ranking of all characters.
How does it differ from Vampire Survivors?
Alongside top-down combat against crowds, it combines a main weapon, ability scrolls, traits, retrieved equipment and blessings. These are the systems to manage here, rather than evidence that one game has categorically deeper builds.
How are blessings unlocked?
Quests unlock the Shrine of Blessings and individual blessings, then Gold purchases permanent upgrades. The initial shrine unlock is Obolus, requiring 300 Gold collected in total. Blessings differ from run-specific traits and equipment placed in slots.
Is there a single strongest build?
A controlled ranking of every character in the current version has not been verified. Choose around weapon and ability tags, unlocked equipment and the quest objective. Do not apply the same multipliers indiscriminately to direct damage and effects such as Burn or Spark.
How long is a run?
Regular Halls use a 30-minute survival format, although defeat can end a run earlier. The Vault differs from the standard 30-minute format; not every mode has the same duration.
How should equipment variants be compared?
Distinguish base equipment from higher-rarity variants and read the effect shown on the actual item. This table covers 15 examples, not every item or variant. The old draft’s Common/Rare/Legendary scheme and fixed colors are not used.
Which release and extra content does this guide cover?
The PC full release was on 24 September 2024. Free Bardcore content is included, while paid Boglands content and the unreleased The Lost Archives are not merged into mandatory base-game progression. A complete patch history has not been checked.
