GRIS Beginner's Guide: Early Controls, Platforms, and Returning for Collectibles
Edition: PC (Steam), base game. Chapter numbers follow guides that divide the game into five chapters. Sections covering later abilities and collectible locations start collapsed. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. Not independently retested through gameplay.
Check separately whether you can move, reach a platform, or activate a mechanism. When a new input appears on screen, try it once before moving on. Open only the detailed section that matches your current location.
First inputs to check and changes on screen
| Situation | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| You have just started moving | Have you reached the point where you can run and jump? | Move right first, then try the ledges after the controls change |
| A new control prompt appears | The displayed button and your assigned input in the settings | Try it in place and watch the change in shape or movement. Do not confuse it with another ability's input |
| You cannot reach the next platform | Nearby lights and reactions, as well as the platform's height | Recheck paths to the sides and above before repeatedly jumping in place |
Show the Chapter 1 bridge solution (answer)
Chapter 1: the two-star bridge and the three-star bridge
- Move right and collect the first star. When you reach the dead end on the right, jump up to the broken bridge or channel above and look for a route back left.
- Climb up and collect the next star, then watch the lights form a bridge. The first bridge you saw needs three stars, so do not try to cross it with only two.
- Head left and climb the stairs into the tower. A different bridge at the top forms with two stars; use that bridge.
- Collect the remaining star in the tower beyond the short bridge. You now have the three stars required for the first bridge.
- Return below and head to the bridge you could not cross earlier. Follow the path formed by the stars to the right.
- Continue to the broken statue's hand and watch for the scene to change. Collecting every optional round item is not the requirement for opening this bridge.
Show the early collectible and the conditions for returning later (location and answer)
Chapter 1 Mementos: the first one and a later return
- In the tower leading to the third star, check the left side before climbing all the way up. Jump or drop left from the tower to a platform with a round Memento.
- Touch it to collect it, then return right and continue toward the story's star. Track the star-bridge progression separately from Memento collection.
- Even if Chapter 1 shows two collectible slots, do not keep searching for both on your first visit. The other one requires returning later and cannot be reached with only your initial movement and jump.
- When you reach the central area of the final chapter, check the lower left. Enter the water on the side with the "1 / 2" collectible display and swim to find the Memento. This is separate from retracing your initial Chapter 1 route.
Show the Chapter 2 route through the wind (answer)
Chapter 2: handling the wind before and after gaining Heavy
- Before learning Heavy, wait inside buildings. Instead of repeatedly stepping outside while the wind blows, wait for it to subside and then move to the next shelter.
- Collect stars and advance to the top of the small tower, where you gain the ability in a scene that surrounds you with a square shape. Do not assume a control you have not yet unlocked is available from the first windy area.
- After gaining it, use the ability input shown on screen to take Heavy's block form. In the strong wind immediately afterward, move forward gradually in this form and enter the next building.
- For breakable-looking floors or stones, position yourself to stand or jump above them, then drop with Heavy. This is different from repeatedly pushing against them from the side.
- If you are aiming for the Sandstorm achievement, also check your movement before obtaining the ability. Enduring only the final strong gust does not undo earlier times you were blown back.
Show the Chapter 2 detour beneath the bell (location and answer)
Chapter 2: breaking the three statues beneath the bell
- Return to the large bell and strike the breakable floor beneath it with Heavy. Check that it breaks and lets you drop through.
- Break the floor in the lower bell room too, entering the area with black-and-white statues. From here, choose your targets before striking.
- Choose the climbable, fragile statues one at a time and hit each from above with Heavy. Break all three without making extra strikes on empty ground.
- Check for the Anger achievement notification and your route onward. Its condition differs from Inuksuit, which involves breaking the chapter's small stone piles, so keep the counts separate.
Show return starting points and collectible differences (answer)
Returning for other collectibles through chapters and checkpoints
| Target | Reference point for returning | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1 Memento collected later | Water at the lower left of the final chapter's central area | Do not treat it as an item obtainable simply by returning to the start of Chapter 1 |
| Inuksuit | Start from Chapter 2, checkpoint 2 | Targets 14 small stone piles, separately from the three statues above. This article does not provide solutions for all 14 locations |
| Apples | Start from the beginning of Chapter 3 | Do not skip the process of feeding the forest creature partway through. A complete apple location list is not included |
| Magic fowls | Start from Chapter 5, checkpoint 3 | Targets seven birds after gaining the song ability. Solutions for all seven locations are not included |
- If chapter selection is available, you can choose a new starting point for collecting items. If chapter or checkpoint numbers differ from your reference, also compare colors, terrain, and unlocked abilities. This article does not cover all 28 Memento locations or every achievement.
What to recheck when you get stuck
| Problem | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A bridge does not fully form | The number of lights in that bridge and the stars following you | Look for another, shorter bridge or platforms leading upward. Open the Chapter 1 section for the detailed sequence |
| The wind keeps pushing you back to the same place | Your currently available controls and whether you are inside or outside a building | Keep the methods before and after unlocking the ability separate. Match your location to the Chapter 2 section |
| A round collectible remains | Is it a story star or an optional Memento? | Separate progression requirements from the collectible display and check whether the item is obtainable on your first visit |
| The scenery differs after choosing a chapter | The chapter's color, checkpoint, and available controls | Compare terrain instead of assuming the chapter number alone identifies the same place |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need every Memento to progress?
Distinguish paths created by story stars from optional Mementos. If a bridge stops you, check the star count and other platforms rather than treating the remaining collectible count as the progression requirement.
What if the early collectible display is incomplete?
Some items can be collected on the first visit; others require returning later. Open the collectible section matching your location and check the required stage of progression.
