ABOUT

What is Downwell?

A 2D platforming shooter about descending a seemingly bottomless well. Created by Japanese independent developer Moppin and published by Devolver Digital, its defining invention is the Gunboots: boot-shaped weapons that fire downward, both attacking enemies and slowing your fall through their recoil. Attacking and movement control share the same input, so every decision about whether to shoot is also a decision about your descent. Enemies can be defeated by stomping as well as shooting. The well's terrain is randomly generated each time, and the official description states that memorizing stages will not help. The source article records 8,606 Steam reviews and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. Japanese is supported.

「Shoot with your boots. The recoil stops your fall」 — Based on the official Steam store description and review record

🔑 Key Points

1. Gunboots combine attack and movement

Firing downward defeats enemies while the recoil slows your fall. The design combines attack with movement control.

2. Stomping also defeats enemies

Stomping is an alternative to shooting. It lets you keep descending while saving ammunition.

3. Ammunition is limited

You cannot fire indefinitely. Since ammunition is replenished by actions such as landing, every decision to shoot is also resource management.

4. Randomly generated every time

The official description states that memorizing stages will not help. Adapt instead of trying to remember the layout.

5. Upgrades change how you play

Finding different weapons and upgrades gradually changes your approach.

📚 Sources and Scope
