ABOUT

What is The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth?

A roguelike shooter about Isaac, a boy who flees into a basement and fights by firing tears. Every dungeon is randomly generated, and hundreds of items stack their effects as you collect them. Their combinations, or synergies, can enlarge tears, make them pierce enemies or transform them into entirely different weapons, creating a different build each run. There is also an enormous range of unlocks. After a decade of play, the Japanese source's Steam review snapshot recorded over 440,000 reviews rated Overwhelmingly Positive. It is a landmark of the roguelike genre. Note, however, that **Japanese is not officially supported**.

🔑 Essential points

1. Randomly generated every time; death ends the run

The dungeon layout and items change on every run, and death ends that attempt. Unlocked characters and items remain, so your options expand the more you play.

2. Item synergies are the heart of the game

Each item adds its effects to those you already have, and certain combinations transform your tears completely. Discovering what will combine this time is what has kept people playing for a decade.

3. Very little is explained

Picking up an item displays only a short phrase, not an explanation of its effects. Whether you learn by experimenting or consult outside information is up to you. Picking things up and trying them is enough to enjoy a first playthrough.

4. A huge range of unlocks

Characters, items, endings and many other features unlock through clears and specific conditions. Even the first few dozen hours can feel like only the beginning.

5. Japanese is not officially supported

Japanese is not officially supported. However, the amount of text is small and many item effects can be understood visually, so the language barrier is comparatively low.

FAQ

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth FAQ

Q1 What kind of game is The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth? ▼
A

It is a roguelike shooter in which you fight by firing tears. Each dungeon is randomly generated, and hundreds of items combine to create different builds on every run. Widely regarded as a landmark roguelike, it had over 440,000 Steam reviews rated Overwhelmingly Positive in the Japanese source's review snapshot. Developed and published by Nicalis, it was released on November 4, 2014.

Q2 Does it support Japanese? ▼
A

Japanese is not officially supported. However, there is relatively little text, and many item effects become apparent when you pick them up and fire, so the language barrier is comparatively small. If this still concerns you, check before buying. Similar games with Japanese support include [Noita](/games/noita/) and [Vampire Survivors](/games/vampire-survivors/).

Q3 I do not understand what an item does ▼
A

That is part of the normal experience. The game gives no detailed explanations, so picking things up and trying them is the basic approach. You can enjoy it by experimenting first, then consulting outside information once you become familiar with it and want to know more.

Q4 Do I lose everything when I die? ▼
A

You lose the items from that run, but unlocks remain. New characters and items accumulate as you unlock them, so even a failed run expands what the game can offer.

Q5 What should beginners focus on? ▼
A

Taking fewer hits. Staying alive is harder than dealing damage here. Get into the habit of checking enemy projectiles and the terrain before moving around each room. Item luck varies, but your ability to dodge steadily improves.
