ABOUT

What is Astral Ascent?

A 2D roguelike action-adventure set in a fantasy world. Choose from four characters and seek to overcome the Garden, an astral prison guarded by 12 powerful Zodiacs. Official information describes dozens of unlockable spells, letting you discover a suitable build and grow stronger. The Zodiacs inhabit four worlds, each with unique attacks, abilities, patterns, and reasons to fight. Two-player co-op is supported, including online play through Steam Remote Play Together. The story unfolds through repeated runs. The source records 8,504 Steam reviews and a Very Positive rating. Japanese is supported.

First Learn to Use All Four Spells and Refresh

Astral Ascent has four ordinary spell slots. A used spell cannot be reused until you use the remaining slots and trigger Spell Refresh. Finding one strong spell is not enough: consider the costs and actions required to cycle back to it.

  1. Read enemy telegraphs and enter a range where basic attacks are safe
  2. Hit with basic attacks to recover mana, then use an unused spell
  3. Use all four slots to Refresh and begin the next cycle
  4. Prioritize dodging dangerous telegraphs, even partway through a cycle

You can switch to unused slots. Spells do not have to fire in one fixed order; the restriction prevents immediate reuse of an already-used slot.

Distinguish Basic Attacks, Ordinary Spells, and Signature

Ordinary spells consume mana, while successful basic attacks gradually restore it. Ayla and Kiran refill through melee hits; Octave's starting weapon uses basic gunfire.

Distinguish Basic Attacks, Ordinary Spells, and Signature: 3 entries

Basic attackRestore mana while dealing damageWhether attacks connect and whether you are safe until the next telegraph
Four ordinary spell slotsSpend mana to attack or trigger effectsRemaining mana, unused slots, and whether the spell moves you
SignatureCharacter-specific actionIts timed cooldown and character-specific effect

This guide does not assign a fixed one-mana return per basic hit. Signature does not share the four ordinary spells' reuse condition either; check its separate on-screen gauge.

Four Base Characters: Start by Learning the First Two

The introduction starts with Ayla. Compare Ayla and Kiran early, then explore to unlock Octave and Calie. Four included base characters does not mean all four are freely selectable immediately.

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

Four Base Characters: Start by Learning the First Two: 4 entries
CharacterStarting weapon and control featuresUnlock status
AylaMelee dagger attacks. Well suited to practicing quick approaches and retreatsAvailable from the introduction
KiranMelee fist attacks and a unique counterAn early starting character
OctaveBasic gunfire against distant enemies; a drone as the unique actionAdded through exploration and Garden unlock progression
CalieBasic attacks launch gems; the unique action retrieves themAdded through exploration and Garden unlock progression

The independent wiki says Octave requires progressing Garden NPC unlocks and reaching the third region's Water Sign Zodiac, while Calie requires reaching the fourth region's Air Sign Zodiac; neither requires defeating the boss. However, 2.6 revised character and NPC unlocks, so these are not treated as confirmed current procedures. Check Garden conversations and unlock displays after new runs.

Additional Characters: Yamat and Arven Each Require DLC

Current PC content includes two paid-DLC playable characters alongside the four base characters. Merely seeing a character in the Garden does not mean they are playable.

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

Additional Characters: Yamat and Arven Each Require DLC: 2 entries
DLC characterFeaturesAppearance condition if owned
Yamat the Breach TravelerA unique action transforms into a dragon. DLC first released on 2024-07-29Near Sova after unlocking the Poetic Peddler
Arven the Wolf BladeFights with the wolf Kat. Two weapons: Alpha Sword and Ethereal Missiles. First PC release: 2026-05-14Near Sova after unlocking the Poetic Peddler

Version 2.6.2 fixed a bug that made DLC owners wait until unlocking the Telescope. Distinguish NPC appearances, Echoes, and Shadow Clones without ownership from playable unlocks. Do not apply other characters' four-weapon tables unchanged to Arven's weapon count or conditions.

Four Base Regions and Their Possible Zodiacs

In normal progression, a Zodiac from that region's pool appears at each region's end, followed by The Master beyond the four regions. You do not fight all 12 consecutively in one run.

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

Four Base Regions and Their Possible Zodiacs: 4 entries
OrderBase-game regionPossible Zodiacs
1Fragmented PlainsTaurus/Virgo/Capricorn
2Red BarrensLeo/Sagittarius/Aries
3Coral ArchipelagoScorpio/Pisces/Cancer
4Crimson HighlandsAquarius/Libra/Gemini

English region and boss names are included for comparison. Check high-Destiny additions and The Outer Reaches' alternative regions separately from the initial normal route. The beginner's guide covers representative telegraphs and dodges for each boss.

Prowess Since 2.6: Start from Your First Specialization

May 2026's 2.6 redesigned Signature-related Prowess. The first specialization presents three choices for each character, affecting the related Prowess pool offered afterward.

  1. Read the first three options to understand how the build uses Signature
  2. Learn the chosen specialization's activation conditions and practice meeting them
  3. Judge later choices by whether their conditions can be triggered comfortably

For example, Kiran has options enhancing effects after counters and others operating while Signature is on cooldown. The same character can demand different priorities. Do not use an old elemental Prowess list or universal strongest ranking unchanged as a current selection guide.

After the First Victory: Raise Destiny with Sova

Returning to the Garden after first defeating The Master does not end progression. Path of Destinies and Void Catalyst unlock, allowing you to choose the next challenge conditions.

  1. Talk to Sova in the Garden and check Path of Destinies
  2. Starting at DL1, clear the current Destiny Level to unlock the next
  3. Progress through first victory → DL1 → DL2 → DL3 → DL4 → DL5 → DL6
  4. Check permanent upgrades using Destiny Fragments, and review missing upgrades if stuck

Clearing DL6 or above is a major milestone for ordinary character and companion-Zodiac endings. For a companion Zodiac's ending, bring that Zodiac as a summon and win. DL6 is not the highest difficulty. The total endings including all DLC and hidden-ending conditions require separate verification.

Arsenal Facility, Weapons, and Passives Have Different Unlock Conditions

Unlocking the facility does not unlock every weapon. When pursuing a new weapon, check which character must meet its conditions too.

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

Arsenal Facility, Weapons, and Passives Have Different Unlock Conditions: 4 entries
TargetConfirmed conditionCaution
Arsenal facilityEncounter The Master onceDistinguish encountering from defeating
The four base characters' weapons added in 1.4Defeat The Master at DL2 / DL4 with that characterDo not assume clearing with another character unlocks everyone's weapons
Dead Cells weapons from 1.9Additional weapons for Ayla, Kiran, Calie, Octave, and YamatIndependent guides agree on clearing DL5 or higher with the same character. The threshold is unconfirmed in official text; also check the in-game condition display
Weapon passivesWeapon-specific quests. Purchase with Sun Pieces is also possible since 2.3Separate from unlocking the weapon itself

Arven, added in 2026 with two weapons, is not automatically included in this DL2 / 4 / 5 table. Likewise, the old claim that quests are the only way to unlock passives no longer fits PC versions from 2.3 onward.

The Roles of The Outer Reaches and Celestial Haven

Separate from additional characters, DLC expands regions and Garden features. If a place or feature in a guide is missing, check which DLC it belongs to.

Wide tables scroll horizontally.

The Roles of The Outer Reaches and Celestial Haven: 2 entries
DLCMain additionsDistinction from the base game
The Outer ReachesAlternative regions corresponding to the four base regions, additional enemies, an Andromeda battle, and moreDoes not simply double an ordinary run to eight regions
Celestial HavenA Garden animal shelter and pets that accompany exploration to find rewardsDoes not add playable characters

The Outer Reaches' alternative regions are The Shattered Rises, The Molten Wastes, The Frostbound Expanses, and The Obsidian Heights. Do not reinterpret simultaneous free-update features as paid-DLC exclusives.

When You Cannot Find a DLC Entrance

The Outer Reaches requires owning the DLC and DL1 or above. Do not keep searching for alternative regions during a normal run before first defeating The Master.

  1. If you own The Outer Reaches, set DL1 or above with Sova after the first victory
  2. If you own Celestial Haven, check near Sova in the Garden after the introduction

Manufacturer-supplied Nintendo UK descriptions direct players to The Shattered Rises during a DL1 run after first defeating the Master for Outer Reaches, and to select a companion pet below Sova's platform at the hub's lower right after the tutorial for Celestial Haven. The former also agrees with the independent wiki's PC description. The latter's precise PC location has not been checked in-game, so follow your screen if platforms differ.

Compare Platform, Update Date, and DLC Together

The launch description of four characters and four regions introduces the base game, but is insufficient as a complete 2026 content list. Old pages can particularly mislead character unlocks and Prowess procedures.

  1. First check whether the information concerns the base game or a particular DLC
  2. If a new character does not appear, check DLC ownership and the Poetic Peddler unlock
  3. Check whether a Prowess list reflects the 2.6 redesign
  4. Compare damage multipliers, healing amounts, and other values with current in-game displays

This guide compares public information. It does not assert PC 2.6.2 as the latest version shared by every platform; check console release dates and current builds separately.

FAQ

Astral Ascent FAQ

Q1 Why can I not repeatedly use only my favorite spell? ▼
A

Used slots do not return until every remaining slot is used and Spell Refresh occurs. You can switch to unused slots, but that does not remove the restriction on used spells.

Q2 What should I do when mana runs out? ▼
A

Hit enemies with basic attacks to refill. First dodge attack telegraphs, then land a short attack during an opening to restore enough for the next spell, rather than repeatedly taking hits while refilling.

Q3 Can I select all four characters immediately? ▼
A

The base game includes four, but not all are freely selectable from the introduction. Start with Ayla, compare controls with early Kiran, and advance unlocks through exploration.

Q4 I defeated The Master but returned to the Garden ▼
A

Progression continues after the first victory. Check Path of Destinies with Sova and advance from DL1 onward. Ordinary endings have a milestone at clearing DL6 or higher.

Q5 Yamat or Arven is in the Garden but I cannot use them ▼
A

They can appear as NPCs without DLC ownership. Playing them requires the corresponding DLC. If owned, current official PC guidance places their appearance after the Poetic Peddler unlock.
