Wandersong Beginner's Guide: The Song Wheel and Act 1
Edition: PC (Steam) version, through Act 1. Inputs use examples from the default bindings; follow your settings if you have changed them. Locations include their English names. Act 1 solutions are collapsed by default. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. These steps have not been retested through gameplay.
Use song by connecting directions on the wheel to changes in characters and terrain, rather than memorizing note names. The number row and numeric keypad use different layouts, so check your input first if you hear an unexpected note. Open the collapsed Act 1 steps below only when you need help finding where to go next.
Eight directions: distinguish the number row from the numeric keypad
With a mouse, left-click to bring up the wheel, then choose a direction to sing. On a controller, you can also sing with the right stick. If pressing a number highlights a different direction than expected, distinguish these two keyboard layouts.
| Wheel direction | Keyboard number row | Numeric keypad |
|---|---|---|
| Up | 8 | 8 |
| Up-right | 7 | 9 |
| Right | 6 | 6 |
| Down-right | 5 | 3 |
| Down | 4 | 2 |
| Down-left | 3 | 1 |
| Left | 2 | 4 |
| Up-left | 1 | 7 |
- The musical scale changes between scenes, so do not treat one color or direction as a fixed absolute note throughout the game. Check the direction on screen and the cues displayed.
What to sing to and which changes to watch
| Target or situation | How to read the input | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Someone who responds to song | Bring up the wheel and read the on-screen color, direction, and timing cues | Before holding the same note, check whether you have switched to a direction that produces a response |
| Flowers and plants | Change the direction you sing in and check whether their color or height changes | When they serve as platforms, look at their new position before jumping. The same direction does not necessarily produce the same effect on every plant |
| Birds | Sing nearby and check for a response, such as following you | After they respond, reassess the places you can reach and the paths you can take |
| A song with repeated notes | Distinguish two consecutive cues in the same direction from one sustained note | Release and repeat the input if needed. Do not assume you must move to a different note to continue |

Langtree: check three houses before deciding where to go next
The following includes Act 1 progression requirements. Finish your objectives in the village first, then use dialogue to establish your next destination.
- After leaving home, learn about the village's ghost problem from Mask and head to Langtree. In the village, talk to the mayor to confirm your current objective.
- Check the three homes belonging to Clyde, Bronson, and Ruby. Sing to the ghosts inside, changing directions on the wheel in response to the on-screen cues. Do not keep holding just one fixed note.
- Once a ghost retreats, check the resident's dialogue too, then move to a house you have not handled yet. Clearing one house does not mean the whole village's problem is resolved.
- Return to the mayor after finishing all three houses. You next need a song to meet the Overseer, so advance the mayor's dialogue instead of leaving the village to keep searching for another route.
- Continue your conversation with Ruby until you reach the scene where you learn the Overseer Song. Follow its displayed directions and phrases, and finish the dialogue before running ahead.
- If ghosts appear on the road again as you pass through the village, deal with them through song and head to the Tree of Slumber. There, use the Overseer Song you learned to proceed to the next area.

Dreamscape and Dream Castle: establish why you need to climb
- Upon entering the Dreamscape, look for birds and flowers that respond to song. Use the platforms and movements altered by your singing to reach Dream Castle.
- Read the Dream Fairy's dialogue in the castle. Your objective is the bell at the top, so look for platforms that let you climb instead of repeating the same conversations near the entrance.
- Where you use plants and birds, watch the change caused by your song before moving. If you cannot reach a platform, reconsider the direction you sing to the target before repeating the same jump.
- Ring the bell at the top of the castle and continue the conversation with the Dream King who appears. Afterward, return to the village, bearing in mind that you can now understand a new language.

Back in the village: switch from driving ghosts away to talking
- If ghosts remain in Langtree, do not endlessly repeat your original response. You can now understand them, so use song and dialogue to continue their interactions with the residents.
- Follow the exchanges between ghosts and villagers, and finish your conversation with the mayor too. Do not interrupt necessary dialogue while focusing only on finding a destination.
- Continue to your conversation with Miriam and follow the sequence that takes you to Delphi. This marks the transition from Act 1 to the next act.
- The ghosts' relationships and later story outcomes are omitted from the instructions needed to progress.
What to check when progress stalls
| Symptom | What to check | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Pressing a number does not select the intended direction | The layouts of the number row and numeric keypad | Use the table above to match your key to the highlighted position. Check whether mouse input selects the same direction |
| You are singing, but the target does not change | Whether you are close enough, whether the target gives a cue, and whether you are changing input direction | Check sound output and the target's response separately, one at a time |
| You keep missing the same jump beside a plant | Whether singing changes the platform's position | Sing to the plant first, then retry the jump from its height after it responds |
| You get stuck on a song with repeated notes | Whether you are confusing two inputs with one held input | Watch the divisions in the cue and input the same direction again. Do not try to solve it only by changing notes |
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to memorize sheet music or note names to progress?
Start by watching the wheel's directions, the on-screen cues, and the target's response. The scale can change between scenes even for the same direction, so you do not need to memorize absolute note names as answers that apply throughout the game.
What should I check if I can sing but cannot progress?
Check your input direction, where the target responds, what your song changes, and the current objective given in dialogue, in that order. For steps containing locations and progression requirements, open the collapsed Act 1 sections.
