Thumper Beginner's Guide: Visual Cues, Inputs, and Shielded Bosses
Edition: PC (Steam), normal PLAY. PLAY+ and VR-specific controls are excluded. Action and directional inputs below refer to your assigned buttons. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. Not retested through hands-on play.
First distinguish pressing on white pads, holding through red bars, and adding a direction for turns. Prioritize completing sections before last-moment scoring inputs. If a boss route repeats, check the requirements for firing the green attack separately from the Pound needed to open its shield.
Choose the Next Input from the Visual Cue
| Visual cue | Input | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Glowing white rectangular pad (Thump) | Press Action in time with the pad | Holding the previous input and assuming it also counts as pressing on the next pad |
| Red bar | Hold Action while passing through | Pressing once and releasing partway through the bar |
| Wall or turn bending left or right | Hold Action and input the direction of the turn | Trying to turn with direction alone, or aiming only for last-moment Perfect Turns from the start |
| Obstacles to jump over and blue rings | Hold Up and press Action on a white pad to jump | Assuming Up alone lets you jump freely from any point |
| A section requiring a longer jump | Keep holding Action after takeoff to extend flight | Pressing only at takeoff, then releasing and landing short |
Linking a White Pad, Red Bar, and Turn
A practice example for when these cues occur in sequence. This is not a fixed chart guaranteed in this order in a particular level.
- Press Action on reaching the white pad. Use this as your reference for starting the hold.
- If a red bar follows, keep holding through it. Do not switch to pressing again for each bar.
- When you reach a turn while holding, input its direction. Learn normal passage first, then aim for Perfect Turns by adding direction at the last moment.
- If a new white pad comes next, make a fresh press timed to that pad. Read hold-through sections separately from sections requiring a timed press.
- Return to the cue before the collision and fix one issue at a time: whether to press earlier, whether the hold ended, or whether the direction was wrong.
Performing a Pound After Jumping
- Find the white pad before the point where you want to jump. Hold Up and press Action there to take off.
- Hold Action in the air to maintain jump distance. Do not confuse continuing to hold Up with extending flight.
- Press Down in the air to descend with a Pound. If you need a shockwave, time the landing to a white pad. Merely returning to the ground does not always create one.
- Check whether the shockwave affected tentacles or a shield. Practice takeoff, holding for flight, and Pounding a white pad separately.
What to Check When a Boss Loop Will Not End
| Situation | Requirement | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The same pattern repeats | Hit the green pad sequence without misses and time Action to the final glowing firing pad too | Missing partway turns the remaining pads blue. Rather than assuming progress is blocked, fix the missed cue on the next loop |
| A boss with a closed shield from Level 3 onward | Some require a Pound shockwave to open the shield | Do more than run the same route correctly: jump and time a Pound to a white pad |
| You get hit before reaching the green attack | Stabilize the red bars and turns immediately before it | Check for lost holds or directions along the route, rather than watching only the boss-attack input |
| You missed a blue ring | Distinguish scoring requirements from survival requirements | First learn to pass red obstacles safely, then improve scores with rings and Perfect Turns |
Recovering and Retrying After Losing Your Shell
| State or action | Behavior in normal PLAY | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Take damage once | Lose your shell and become unable to survive the next hit | Stop risky scoring attempts and pass red obstacles and turns reliably |
| Hit a Bonus Thump without a shell | Normal PLAY allows shell recovery | Not every white pad restores the shell. Identify pads that have become bonus pads |
| Take damage again | Retry that sub-level | Remember the first cue that went wrong; do not mash the same input |
| Use R on PC | Open the Quick Restart menu | Read and choose the displayed restart destination. Do not confuse the restart unit with starting the entire game over |
- PLAY+ differs in the multiplier condition for shell recovery and how far death sends you back. Do not apply the normal PLAY explanation unchanged.
Later Sections: Distinguish Lane Changes from Turns
| Action or cue | How to use it | Fixing mistakes |
|---|---|---|
| Lane branches from Level 4 onward | Use left or right to move into an open lane | Holding Action on the ground produces a separate banking action; distinguish it from simply changing lanes |
| Meeting the barrier where a lane ends | Use direction plus Action to bank along the wall | Do not head into a wall expecting only a lane change. Watch how the upcoming terrain ends |
| Laser cues from Level 5 onward | Some encounters attack you for missing a pad | Recognize that missing pads is now dangerous too, and correct your timing from the preceding section |
| Aim for a Perfect Turn | Input the direction at the last moment to improve your score | Do not commit to difficult inputs before ordinary turns are reliable |
Frequently asked questions
Can I jump just by pressing Up?
Hold Up and press Action on a white pad to jump. Holding Action in the air extends jump distance.
Does running a boss pattern correctly open its shield?
From Level 3 onward, some shields require a Pound shockwave. Jump, press Down to descend, and time the Pound to a white pad. Then complete the pattern correctly to fire the green attack.
