The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Beginner's Guide: Recording Branches and First Steps
Edition: Ultra Deluxe (2022) on PC (Steam app 1703340). Excludes controls and console commands specific to the 2013 edition or Half-Life 2 mod. The routes below assume you are carrying nothing. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. Not retested through hands-on play.
Listen to the Narrator and remember which door or action changed your path. On the next attempt, choose one point to change so you can trace why you returned to the same route. Open only the route answers you want to see.
Separate Movement from Interaction
| Control | Check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Movement and camera | Key or stick assignments | Look toward your target and check which doors and corridors you can enter |
| Interact or use | The Use input in your settings | Aim at a door or button and use it. Distinguish approaching it from actually activating it |
| Audio and subtitles | Volume and subtitles that let you follow the narration | Listen to the response after a choice and record the next branch |
Three Things to Record for Your Next Run
- Record one place where your route changed: a left/right choice, stairs, or a button you pressed. You do not need to learn every route's name at the start.
- Listen to the full response. When you return to the beginning, retrace the previous path up to the point where you will change an action.
- Match your edition and what you are carrying when comparing the guide's routes. Carrying something different can produce a different response at the same door.

Coward Ending: Close the Door from Inside Room 427
- Begin inside Stanley's starting office, room 427. Look toward the door before entering the corridor outside.
- Interact with the door from inside to close it. Closing it from outside is not the same condition for entering this branch.
- Remain inside, listen to the narration, and wait until you return to the start. You do not need to leave to search for another door or key.

Freedom Ending: Take the Left Door and Proceed to OFF
- Leave the office carrying nothing, then take the left door in the room with two doors. Pass through the meeting room toward the stairs.
- Go upstairs into the boss's office. Distinguish this from the route downstairs.
- Enter 2845 on the keypad, then take the elevator down through the passage that opens at the back.
- Continue to the Mind Control Facility. The route marked ESCAPE branches elsewhere, so do not take it this time.
- Pass through the facility room and press OFF at the power controls. Do not press ON by mistake.
- Listen to the narration until the door opens, then continue beyond it. This result does not mean you have seen every branch.

Countdown Ending: Choose ON at the Power Controls
- As in branch 2 above, take the left door, go upstairs, enter the boss's office, and continue to the facility at the back. Do not mix this with another route involving a carried object.
- This time, press ON at the power controls. This final action, rather than the earlier left/right door choice, changes the branch.
- When the countdown starts, follow the narration and changes in the scene. Do not keep searching as if this were a timed puzzle that guarantees escape with the correct disarming code.
- To try the other outcome, choose OFF when you next reach this point. Do not brute-force the numbered buttons or reuse console commands from the original.

The New Content Door: Check Initial Settings and Changes After Runs
- Try completing several routes and returning to the start. The progress required depends on your initial answer about whether you have played before, so do not assume the door always appears after a fixed number of runs.
- In the corridor before the room with two doors, look for a half-open door marked New Content. If you find it, enter and follow the guided route to its end.
- After returning to the start, check whether doors or signs have changed. A small change to the first corridor alone does not mean a bug is preventing the three ordinary branches from working.
- If you gain the ability to carry an item later, return to empty hands only when comparing the same outcomes as the steps above. This article does not cover every carried-item branch, collectible, or epilogue requirement.
When You Return to the Same Route or Differ from the Guide
| Symptom | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| You keep returning to the same place | The choice point changed since the previous run | Change one door or final action and compare, rather than changing several points at once |
| The response seems to stop partway through | Whether narration or scene changes are continuing | Wait briefly and record the last action you changed. Open the relevant section for the route answer |
| The same route gives a different response | Whether this is Ultra Deluxe and whether you are carrying something | Match the edition and carried-item state before comparing your chosen route |
| The additional-content instructions do not match your location | Your edition and the event you just completed | Compare conditions in the additional-content answer section. Do not assume an unverified fixed run count or trick |
