FINAL FANTASY ADVENTURE (GB)

FINAL FANTASY ADVENTURE Early Guide: Marsh Cave and Vinkett's Mansion

Stock up before entering the cave, and collect the exploration weapons first. This guide sets out progression through rescuing the heroine in order.

Scope: Original Japanese GB version (1991). Does not cover Sword of Mana or the 2016 remake's rules. / Content checked: 2026-10-14

Covers the Marsh Cave through Vinkett's Mansion. This guide compares reference material and has not been verified through hands-on play. Hydra and Vampire strategies and growth types are recommendations for particular purposes. It does not cover every dungeon or optimal character growth.

6 entries shown

1. Prepare before heading to the cave

  1. Continue the conversation at Bogard's cabin and receive the Mattock in the back. Break the rocks to get through the eastern cave, then buy a Battle Axe at the item shop. You also need it to cut trees and open the way.
  2. Keys and Mattocks are consumed when used. Prepare spares before exploring, and avoid unnecessary detours when supplies run low. If you run out, Skeletons sometimes drop Keys and Green Slimes sometimes drop Mattocks. Drops are not guaranteed, so make stocking up before entering your usual approach.
  3. In the GB version, you can save whenever you choose through Select. Use the 2 slots to keep a save made safely in a town or at an entrance. Avoid overwriting both while poison is steadily draining HP or you are near death.

2. Obtain the Silver Key and enter the Marsh Cave

  1. Staying at Vinkett's Mansion teaches you Cure. After the next morning's event, head to the Lizardman nest south of the area between the mansion and the cave. Defeat every enemy and take the Silver Key from the chest that appears, then open the Marsh Cave entrance. Do not stop after merely hearing about it at the mansion; obtain the key itself.
  2. Speak to the traveling man at the entrance, then explore the northern side first. At a dead end, hit walls with a weapon and use a Mattock where the sound changes. Collect the Chain Sickle ahead to cut ferns and clear passages.
  3. After obtaining the Chain Sickle, return toward the entrance and head south this time. Entering the healing spring also uses a Key, so check your remaining supply before using it. Collect the Iron Shield too, review your equipment, and then head toward Hydra farther inside.

3. Attack Hydra when it approaches the shore

  1. Instead of chasing Hydra and missing, it is easier to aim a charged Chain Sickle attack at it as it approaches the shore. Also pay attention to your facing when its projectiles reach you. After winning, take the Moon Mirror back to the mansion.

4. Prioritize the Chain Flail in the mansion

  1. Speak to the butler while carrying the Moon Mirror, then proceed deeper into the mansion after the battle. Go through the breakable wall on the second floor. In the room with pots, reveal the hidden stairs instead of rushing to the visible stairs leading up. Go down and obtain the Chain Flail. Use it toward a post to cross to a distant platform.
  2. Where posts are far away, charge the gauge to extend your reach. In the room with an empty treasure chest, move it onto the floor switch. Find another staircase beneath a pot, then rescue the heroine in the coffin room. The rescue is not the end: prepare for the Vampire battle on the way back to the entrance.
  3. Against Vampire, avoid the flying bats and aim charged Chain Flail attacks. Since the heroine has been rescued, you can also use the healing available through Ask. After winning, head to Wendel's cathedral.

If you are unsure which growth type to choose

  1. One approach is Warrior if you mainly use weapons early on, or Monk if you want more room to withstand damage. Mage is an option for frequent magic use, and Sage for charged attacks. These are choices by intended use, not an allocation that maximizes every stat.

Before moving on

  1. Have spare Keys and Mattocks
  2. Have distinguished the Silver Key from ordinary Keys
  3. Collected the Chain Sickle
  4. Collected the Chain Flail
  5. Rescued the heroine and finished the battle at the mansion's exit
