Rogue Legacy Beginner's Guide: Purchases, Equipment, Runes, and the First Boss
Edition: Original Rogue Legacy, PC (Steam), standard first playthrough. Does not cover Rogue Legacy 2 or modified versions. Sources checked: October 14, 2026. No gameplay retest has been performed.
In your first few generations, aim to collect gold in the castle and turn it into new equipment and permanent upgrades. Gold remains after death, but distinguish that from the payment to Charon when you next enter the castle.
From death to the next castle entry: spending your gold
- Choose an heir. Early on, consider a Knight or Barbarian variant so you can assess sword handling and durability easily, and read both the class name and the traits.
- On the manor upgrade screen, unlock Smithy if you have not already. Access to the Blacksmith does not let you craft arbitrary equipment whose blueprints you have not found.
- If you plan to buy equipment or runes you checked previously, set aside their cost. When there is nothing specific you want to buy, spend gold on Health Up or Attack Up. This is an early-game purchasing example, not a fixed optimal solution.
- Before buying heavy equipment, check your equipment weight limit and Equip Up. Having enough money is insufficient if the item exceeds that limit.
- Before the castle gate, check the Blacksmith and, if unlocked, the Enchantress. Finding a blueprint or rune only makes it available to buy, so complete the purchase and equip it too.
- Before talking to Charon, review your remaining gold and unpurchased options. Normally, you pay your remaining gold to enter the castle. Do not enter expecting to bank money for the next generation when you lack reductions such as Haggle early on.
Choosing manor upgrades: let your last death inform the next purchase
| What just happened | Option to consider | Next goal after purchasing |
|---|---|---|
| Smithy is not unlocked | Smithy | Find blueprints and check the Blacksmith's stock in the next generation |
| You run out of health in 2–3 rooms before reaching chests | Health Up | Increase the number of rooms in Castle Hamson where you can open chests |
| You collide with the same ordinary enemy while repeatedly hitting it | Attack Up | Move away after one hit and check whether fewer attacks are needed against the same enemy type |
| New equipment is too heavy | Equip Up | Aim to meet the required weight capacity; do not stop at buying the item |
| You obtained a rune from a Fairy Chest | Unlocking the Enchantress and buying that rune | If you own Vault or Sprint, use it for movement and revisit platforms you could not reach |
| You want to remember the boss room's location and try again | Architect | Keeping the castle layout comes at a cost to your income. Treat this as a different goal from a gold-farming run |
Early classes and traits to check before choosing
| Name | When to use it | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Knight / Paladin after upgrading | Learn your range with a standard sword. Once upgraded to Paladin, consider using the shield too | Assuming the upgraded class's shield is available to a Knight |
| Barbarian / King or Queen after upgrading | Use your health to extend castle exploration. After upgrading, use the shout to clear enemy projectiles | Taking every attack because of your high health, then running out before you can heal |
| Mage / Archmage after upgrading | Use MP and spell range to deal with distant enemies | Trying to rely only on magic after running out of MP |
| Miner / Spelunker after upgrading | Exploring to earn more gold | Heading straight to a boss with low early-game durability |
| Dwarfism | Exploring through small gaps | Forgetting that your sword's reach differs from usual |
| P.A.D. | Making it easier to avoid spike traps that rise from the floor | Assuming this also negates wall and ceiling spikes or every type of trap |
Blueprints and runes: what to do after finding them
| What you found | Who to visit in the next generation | What it actually adds |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment blueprint | Blacksmith | Pay gold to craft and equip it. Check weight even when buying armor |
| A rune earned by meeting a Fairy Chest's condition | Enchantress | Buy the rune and attach it to the appropriate equipment slot |
| Vault | Enchantress | Adds an air jump. Revisit chest platforms you could not reach with a normal jump |
| Sprint | Enchantress | Adds a dash. Use it to cross long horizontal gaps or move through Khidr's projectiles |
| Vampire/Siphon | Enchantress | Replenishes HP or MP from defeated enemies. Waiting somewhere without enemies will not replenish them |
Goals on the way from Castle Hamson to Khidr
- Start by checking furniture and chests in Castle Hamson for gold, blueprints, and Fairy Chests. In a Fairy Chest room, read the displayed condition before moving.
- Note boss rooms and teleporters on the map. Teleporters and statues mark rooms connecting to other areas.
- Even if you find Forest Abkhazia to the right, The Maya above, or the Land of Darkness below, do not try to cross every area on your first attempt. Focus on Khidr in Castle Hamson as your first boss.
- Collect healing from the statues at the boss entrance, and check your runes and spell before entering. Do not destroy all the statues while at full health if you want to use them for healing.
- If the boss appeared far away in the previous generation, you can use the Architect to preserve the layout for another attempt. Opened chests do not refill when you preserve the layout, so reconsider this service when your goal is collecting gold.
Khidr: where to dodge and when to attack
Your opponent is a large eye that stays in the center. This guide does not prescribe a required level or number of hits. Your sword range, movement runes, and traits affect where you can attack from.
- Start on the floor below the center and check the projectiles and platforms on both sides. Leave yourself room to avoid being pushed into the floor spikes at the edges.
- Dodge spreading projectiles by moving into open gaps below. Do not jump into a row of bullets just to swing your sword.
- When projectiles rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, avoid staying on the same patch of floor. Move around using the side platforms or air jumps. If you cross above the boss, bouncing with a downward strike is another option.
- When the projectiles leave an opening, land a sword or spell hit, then return to dodging. Use the Paladin's shield or Barbarian King's shout as aids only if you have upgraded to that class.
- If the same projectile kills you each time, do more than buy attack upgrades in the next generation: check whether you have Vault or Sprint and whether you can meet your equipment's weight requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Do I lose my gold when I die?
After death, you can spend gold on manor and equipment upgrades. Charon requires payment when you next enter the castle, so distinguish these two points in the loop.
Why can I not equip an item after finding its blueprint?
You must buy it from the Blacksmith. Even after purchasing, you cannot equip it if it exceeds your weight limit, so check its required weight and Equip Up.
