ABOUT

What is Kenshi?

A squad-based open-world RPG set in over 870km² of seamless wilderness. There is no set story, no objective, and no typical tutorial. You're free to become a merchant, a thief, you're free to set up a base and run a factory -- or rather, if you don't do anything, nothing will happen. The biggest feature is the design concept that ``You are not the chosen one'', there is no correction for the main character, you are beaten in the same arena as NPCs, you lose your limbs, and you become a slave. Its unique feel has garnered enthusiastic support, and since its release in 2018, it has received over 115,000 Steam reviews and remains ``overwhelmingly popular.'' Supports Japanese.

🎯 Read first: Quick guide

🏜️ What kind of game is it?

870km² wilderness/troop-based RPG

You are free to choose what you want to be, such as being a merchant, a thief, or managing a base. There is no set purpose.

⚔️ Being weak is normal

There is no main character correction

Officially, ``You are not the chosen one.'' Lose on the same playing field as NPCs.

🧭 First thing to do

Find someone to beat and earn money

You can get equipment, money, and experience at the same time as loot. Next, hire friends.

「“You are not the chosen one”—The unconventional design continues to garner enthusiastic support」 — From the description on the Steam official store

🧭 How to proceed in the beginning (5 steps)

1. First, find someone you can beat

The main character is really weak right after the beginning. Since you can't fight properly, you look for weaker opponents (small animals, small groups of robbers, etc.) around the city and gradually gain experience.

2. Obtain equipment and funds from defeated opponents

In the early stages of this game, the main source of money is the loot. By stripping and selling the equipment of defeated opponents, you can obtain equipment, funds, and combat experience at the same time.

3. Hire friends to increase the number of people

You can hire companions at bars in town. The estimated market price is around several thousand cat. It's a game where you can't do anything by yourself, so increasing the number of people will be the biggest strength in itself.

4. have a base (house) in the city

Buying a house in town first is safer than immediately building in the wilderness. Raids are less of a concern, letting you practice research and production.

5. Build your base in the wilderness

Once you've laid the foundation in your city house, build your base outdoors. If you build it near a town, it will be easier to move around, and it will also be a place to escape to in times of danger.

⚠️ Design that feels unreasonable if you don't know about it

No main character correction

As the official information states, the player character is not the chosen one. You have the same potential and life as NPCs, not extra HP. Losing is normal; the game asks you to manage how you lose.

Even if you lose, it's not the end

Even if you fall, it is not an immediate game over, but the story continues as you lose limbs or are transported as slaves. The process of climbing up from there is the main focus of this work.

No story or purpose presented

There is no fixed ending, and it is up to the player to decide what they want to achieve. Feeling like you don't know what to do is a specification, not an oversight.

You only grow as much as you use.

Characters gain experience, become stronger, and their appearance changes. The character of the unit is determined by what it trains.

FAQ

Kenshi FAQ

Q1 What kind of game is Kenshi? ▼
A

A squad-based open world RPG set in over 870km² of seamless wilderness. There is no set story or purpose, and it is up to the player to decide what they want to do, such as being a merchant, a thief, or managing a base. Developed and published by Lo-Fi Games, Released on December 6, 2018. It supports Japanese.

Q2 I started but don't know what to do ▼
A

That's by design. This work offers no story or purpose. First of all, please start with "Find an opponent you can beat and defeat them to get equipment and funds". Next, many players follow the steps of hiring friends to increase the number of people (you can't do anything alone), buying a house in the city, and building a base in the wilderness when you get used to it. Detailed steps are summarized in [Early stage guide](/en/games/kenshi/beginners/).

Q3 Why are you so weak? Can't you become stronger? ▼
A

This is because there is no main character correction. The official statement also states that ``You are not the chosen one'' and ``You do not have more hit points than others.'' Since you're on the same playing field as NPCs, it's normal to lose early on. Characters grow as much as you use them, so the only shortcut is to keep fighting against opponents you can beat.

Q4 Is it game over if I lose? ▼
A

No. Even if you fall, the game does not end immediately; you may lose limbs or be taken away as slaves, but the game continues. The process of climbing up from there is the main focus of this work, and the design is such that ``the losing event becomes the story.''

Q5 When should I build a base? ▼
A

It's safer not to suddenly build in the wilderness. The standard practice is to first buy a house in the city, practice research and production, and then move outdoors. Having a base makes you a target for raids, so if you spread it out before you are ready to defend it, you will be crushed. If you build it near a city, it will be easier to move around, and it will also be a place to escape to in times of danger.

Q6 What games are similar? ▼
A

Works with walkthroughs on this site include Caves of Qud, which have similar difficulty and freedom, Valheim and Enshrouded, where you build a base and survive, and Wartales, where you manage troops. If you like the feel of "managing unreason", Stoneshard will also suit you.
