Check difficulty names and region first

The Japanese GameCube version has Normal, Hard, and Maniac. The English version has Easy and does not include the Japanese Maniac difficulty. Do not mechanically substitute overseas guide difficulty names for Japanese ones.

This guide is for Normal in the Japanese version. It does not guarantee you can reach the same position on the same turn on difficulties with different enemy numbers and layouts. Check the enemies and attack ranges on your own screen, and allow more room to wait defensively on Hard or Maniac.

Reread the victory condition every chapter

Chapter 1 ends by seizing, Chapter 2 by routing the enemy, and Chapter 3 by defeating the commander. Even though you fight enemies in each, the action that ends the chapter changes. Check unfinished visits and conversations before your final move so you do not meet the victory condition too soon.

The recommended priorities are safe positioning, protecting houses under time pressure, recruitment-related conversations, and then experience allocation. Removing the immediate danger first is easier to recover from than skipping healing to leave a kill for a low-level ally.

Consider weapon might and weight together

In this game, attack speed decreases by the amount weapon weight exceeds Strength. There is no such penalty when Strength covers the weight. Even after obtaining a Steel Sword, it may not always be best for Ike, so compare its combat forecast with the Iron Sword's.

Check HP after a counterattack as well as whether you can defeat the opponent in one round. Surviving one battle is not enough where several enemy attack ranges overlap. Distribute Vulneraries so units have recovery options even when the healer cannot reach them.

Remember Marcia's Chapter 3 conversation

Talking to Marcia in Chapter 3 does not immediately add her to your fighting force. Having Ike speak to her and prompt her withdrawal leads to her reappearance and recruitment in Chapter 9. Clear a path for Ike's conversation instead of ending the chapter by defeating the commander first.

When you first see a named enemy or allied NPC, check possible conversations before immediately defeating or ignoring them. Conditions affecting later chapters can be hard to spot from the current victory condition alone, so check before the chapter and just before its end.

Train and prepare at the base from Chapter 8

The base menu becomes available in Chapter 8, including Bonus EXP allocation. This can help allies who were hard to train on the battlefield, but the amount and conditions of bonuses differ by chapter and difficulty. There is no need to sacrifice allies or houses just to chase speed from the opening.

Support conversations relate to the number of times units deploy together; they do not need to remain adjacent. Also, removing a skill does not let you freely reequip it: a removed skill does not return. Decide your roster and training plan before changing skills, and keep a separate save first if you only want to try the system.

Checks before moving on

  • Check that the information covers Japanese GameCube Normal
  • Visit both houses in Chapter 1
  • Have Ike talk to Marcia in Chapter 3
  • Consider whether you need a skill before removing it at the base

Is letting Titania defeat enemies a mistake?

You can use her to handle dangerous enemies and rescue houses. Let Ike and the others handle enemies they can defeat safely, without taking excessive risks for experience.

Is overseas Hard the same as Japanese Maniac?

They are not treated as the same. The English version omits Maniac and adds Easy. This article's procedures use Japanese GameCube Normal as the reference.
